  • Siddheshwari Devi Final Edit Rev 1
Siddheshwari Devi – The Queen of Thumri1 by Aditi Desai Kashi, Benares or Varanasi; the ancient spiritual centre of Hindustan, famous for its Ganga, its temples and ghats, pandits and pandas, had another more sensual side in its graceful yet throbbing sub-culture of music and dance. There was a time when for every devotee going to a temple to propitiate the gods there was another who, chewing his delicately flavoured paan, 1 Edited, updated and rewritten version based on: Original article written by Aditi Desai for The India Magazine, Aug. 1981, No. 9 would be strolling towards some singer’s or dancer’s house. In the Benares sunset, the sound of temple bells intermingled with the soul stirring sounds of a bhajan, a thumri, a kajri, a chaiti, a hori. And accompanying these were the melodious sounds of the sarangi or flute and the ghunghroos on the beat of the tabla that quickened the heartbeat. So great was the city’s preoccupation with music, that a distinctive style of classical music, rooted in the local folk culture, emerged and was embodied in the Benaras Gharana ( school or a distinctive style of music originating in a family tradition or lineage that can be traced to an instructor or region). A few miles from Benares, there is a village called Torvan, which appears to be like any other Thakur Brahmin village of that region. But there is a difference. This village had a few families belonging to the Gandharva Jati, a group whose traditional occupation was music and its allied arts. Amongst Gandharvas, it was the men who went out to perform while the women stayed behind.

  • Kali Stotram Herself
“The mind can disentangle itself from worldliness if, through Her grace, She makes it turn toward Kali Stotram Herself. Only then does it become devoted to the lotus feet of the Divine Mother.” Hymns to Goddess Kali ~ Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa In India there has been an unbroken tradition of worshiping God in the form of the Divine Mother Kali for many thousands of years. Kali is She from whom all are born and into whom all must eventually return. She is the ultimate power of creation and destruction, and pervades every aspect of the universe. While Her iconography and mythology have deep mystical and symbolic meaning, Her essence is simple: transformation. Loving Her transforms our lives. She annihilates limitations, purifies hearts, fills lives with joy and protects Her children in ways understandable only to those who worship and depend on Her. Kali is the Goddess of the Tantric tradition, which is characterized by dynamic spiritual practices aimed at transforming consciousness. Primary among these is the devotional recitation of mantras and hymns. Chanting gives expression to the heart’s innate longing for the Divine while awakening subtle energies within the body and mind. This collection of rare hymns to Goddess Kali is being made available with the prayer that they will be approached with humility, devotion, and unselfishness. Translated by Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati © 2012 Kali Mandir www.kalimandir.org Gayatri Mantra for Goddess Kali Meditation on Dakshina Kali This meditation mantra is found in Kali Tantra and Tanta Sara. Dhyana mantras are recited to sonically invoke and mentally visualize the subtle forms of deities before meditation and worship.

  • SAPTHA Mathas Or Matrikas (Seven Divine Mothers)
SAPTHA MATHAs or MATRIKAs (Seven Divine Mothers) Contd..2 -2- Sapta Matrikas are mentioned in the Rigveda, Gobhilasmriti, Markandeya Purana, Matsya Purana, etc. Varahamihira’s Brihat Samhita also mentions about the images of Saptha Matrikas. SAPTHA MATHAs or MATRIKAs - Seven Divine Mothers. As per legend the Matrikas were created to help Lord Siva in his fight against Andhakasura. During the fight, on being hurt blood began to flow profusely from Andhaka's body. Each drop which touched the ground assumed the shape of another Andhaka. Thus there were innumerable Asuras fighting Shiva. To stop the flow of the blood, Shiva created a goddess called Yogesvari from the flames coming out of his mouth. Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswara, Kumara, Varaha, Indra and Yama also sent their saktis to follow Yogesvari in stopping the flow of blood. Thus the Sapta Matrikas originated and Andhakasura finally lost his power and was defeated by Lord Shiva. The Saptha Mathas are Brahmi Mahesvari Kaumari Vaishnavi Vaarahi Indraani Chamundi According to the Varaha Purana the account given of Andhakasura and the Matrikas is an allegory; it represents Atma-Vidya or spiritual wisdom as warring against ‘Andhakara’ the darkness of ignorance. Contd..3 -3- The spirit of vidya, represented by Shiva, fights with Andhakasura, the darkness of Avidya. The more this is attempted to be attacked by Vidya, the more does it tend to increase for a time; this fact is represented by the multiplication of the figures of Andhakasura. Unless the eight evil qualities, kama, krodha etc. are completely brought under the control of Vidya and kept under restraint, it can never succeed in putting down Andhakara.

Prof. SociologyTrident Academy of Creative technology,Bhubaneswar Abstract:- In ancient India, women occupied a very important position, in fact a superior position to, men. It is a culture whose only words for strength and power are feminine -"Shakti'' means "power'' and "strength.'' All male power comes from the feminine. Literary evidence suggests that kings and towns were destroyed because a single woman was wronged by the state. For example, Valmiki's Ramayana teaches us that Ravana and his entire clan was wiped out because he abducted Sita. Veda Vyasa'sMahabharatha teaches us that all the Kauravas were killed because they humiliated Draupadi in public. ElangoAdigal'sSillapathigaram teaches us Madurai, the capital of the Pandyas was burnt because PandyanNedunchezhiyan mistakenly killed her husband on theft charges. "In Hinduism, the momentous event of a foundation at one point in time, the initial splash in the water, from which concentric circles expand to cover an ever-wider part of the total surface, is absent. The waves that carried Hinduism to a great many shores are not connected to a central historical fact or to a common historic movement. " Key words:- Feminine, sakti, strength, humiliation, power. I. INTRODUCTION In this age of ascending feminism and focus on equality and human rights, it is difficult to assimilate the Hindu practice of sati, the burning to death of a widow on her husband's funeral pyre, into our modern world.
