NETBALL IN NEW ZEALAND

The Netball Mainland (NM) Zone was established in October 2012 as part of the review of the structure of replacing the previous two regional entities; “Canterbury Netball” and “Tasman Netball,” and “Team Canterbury Netball Limited”. The Zone has 18 affiliated Netball Centres; spread across the Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman, West Coast and Canterbury (as far south as the Waitaki river) areas, and has responsibility for the support and delivery of netball from community level through to high performance – leading the development of players, coaches, umpires, administrators, technical officials and volunteers across these levels. Netball is one of the highest participation sports in the country and holds a significant place in New Zealand Society. Through its Centres, NM provides participation opportunities to in excess of 21,000 players. The sport contributes significantly to communities both urban and rural, providing opportunities for members to participate in healthy activity, have fun, develop leadership skills and learn values of fair play and achievement. All of these attributes contribute to the development of netballers, officials and administrators as individuals and to their communities across the Zone.

BOARD CHAIR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE REPORT

Significant progress has been made through engaging and working collaboratively with (NNZ), Centres, participants, volunteers, funders, sponsors and fans. We are committed to providing support, effective communication and adopting an inclusive family environment – stronger together!

There were a number of Board changes through the year, with Ric Horsfall being replaced by Scott McCrea and Lee Piper by Darren Wright. We would like to thank Ric and Lee for their time on the Board. The Board and management have responsibility for ensuring the financial sustainability of Netball across the Zone. To reflect this focus, a Sponsorship Sub-committee was formed to join that of Audit and Risk, and a Commercial Manager employed to increase capability in commercial revenue generation. The Netball Mainland (NM) Board and staff spent time through the year drafting a new Strategic Plan to align with Netball New Zealand’s (NNZ) Whole of Netball Plan and reflect the culture and values that we hold dear in the Zone.

The Board takes its Health and Safety responsibilities very seriously and the welfare of employees, players and volunteers. Over the last year a number of policies and risk management plans have been implemented, along with supporting HPSNZ/office health and safety programme.

Community and Centre Engagement

We are very proud of our players who have been wonderful ambassadors on and off the court, delivering over 450 hours of promotional activity, coaching session, sponsor and charity engagements:  Visits by players to clubs and schools in 14 of our centres during the season, with coaching programmes delivered in most centres  Delivering wellness seminars and nutritional information to sponsors and charities  Visits were made to over 20 schools in the zone and delivery of coaching at each school  Promotional appearances on television and radio  Delivery of the ANZ FutureFERNS programme to over 200 children in Nelson

We have also had a number of players in Netball Development Officer roles who have engaged in additional work supporting Centres, our in-schools programme and player development at all levels right across the Zone.

The players also selected four charities for the team/Zone to align with during the season and worked with them as game day sponsors and engaging with their organisation and members. The charities were – Ronald McDonald House , Plunket, AVIVA, Kilmarnock Enterprises.

Tactix players at Ronald McDonald House SI

2016 marked the first year of the new Beko Netball League competition. The development competition for amatuer players, sitting under the ANZ Championship competition. It was an amazing acheivement by all concerned to get this development league off the ground in such a short time span. There were lots of learnings and this will stand us in good stead for 2017.

Tactix Season Members/Community Coaches Attend Team Trainings

A new initiative established in 2015, was continued with huge success in 2016. Our valued Tactix Members and community coaches were provided with the opportunity to come and watch the players train at HPSNZ, and engage in Q &A sessions. We had great feedback from our Members who really enjoy being able to witness the training environment and meet the players in a small group, one-on-one situation and community coaches who are able to observe and reflect from a coaching perspective.

Shooting Roadshow

This year we conducted another very successful roadshow – “Stronger Together” – at six Centres across the NM Zone. The roadshow was delivered by Sue Hawkins and supported by Tammy Mehrtens, with over 150 coaches and 60 talented shooters involved. Plans are under way to further develop this programme for 2017.

International Netball in Netball Mainland

International Test Match Netball returned to our Zone in 2016, with the Silver Ferns playing Jamaica in Nelson. This was the first time that Nelson had ever hosted test match Netball and was certainly a season highlight. A personal highlight for CEO Brigit Hearn, was catching up with her first school netball coach, Natalie Wicken (Silver Fern number 21) who conducted the coin toss for the match. At time of writing we understand that Christchurch will host a test match in October 2017.

High Performance

Changes are afoot, after nine years the ANZ Championship came to an end in 2016. In its place a new six team, domestic, elite competition – “ANZ Premiership Netball.” This is an exciting development for Netball in New Zealand and we look forward to competing in the new look 2017 competition.

Performance This year marked the start of the Inaugural Beko Netball League, which underpins the ANZ Championship competition and provides performance development opportunities for our upcoming players, coaches and umpires.

North Canterbury Netball Centre and Nelson Netball Centre hosted the U17 and U19 National Age Group Championships respectively. These events were well attended by teams from across the country and the Centres involved did a marvellous job in delivering these events. Nelson was also host to 80 teams for the South Island Secondary School Championships.

Community The Community team have been hugely busy working with participants and Centres delivering and coaching coaches in the ANZ Future FERNS programme. We have seen phenomenal growth in the junior ranks and this will continue to be a major focus in 2017. Overall our participation numbers are up 2%, one of the few Zones to show growth. Coach numbers have grown with 69 new community coaches ‘plying their trade’. Umpire and bench official’s development is on-going and will be aligned with the NNZ pathway in the new year.

Netball Mainland Centre Forum This year saw our fourth annual Zone Centre Forum, a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, support each other and work together. Thank you to all who attended this year’s Forum. Your input and feedback has been hugely valuable for future planning.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2016 13

Facilities Development The shortage of suitable indoor court space for Netball continues to be an inhibitor to the growth of our sport particularly in Christchurch, the second largest city in the country. It has however, been heartening to see new facilities open in Waimate and Greymouth, new courts in Westport, and a number of other development projects underway for 2017 completion. The much anticipated nine court Metro Sports Facility development in Christchurch was due to open in the first quarter of 2017, however on-going delays for a variety of reasons have now pushed this date out to 2020. This delay is disappointing for our sport and the wider community.

In Summary

We are indebted to our wonderful group of sponsors, partners and funders; in particular New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), The Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation, Southern Trust and Sport Canterbury/New Zealand for their on-going support, allowing us to continue to provide existing programmes and develop new initiatives to grow netball participation.

Thank you to the NNZ Board, CEO Jennie Wyllie and staff for your support throughout the year.

To all the Centres, volunteers, officials and players out there, thank you for all your dedication to our sport, you are vitally important and your efforts greatly appreciated. We would also like to extend our thanks to those members of our community who sit on NM Advisory Groups and our Selectors from across the Zone who commit endless hours to support our community, development and performance pathways.

At a recent function Ronald McDonald House CEO Matthew Mark spoke of the value and worth of volunteers: “there are 30,000 charitable institutions in NZ to which volunteers give 270,000,000 hours, which equates to $6 billion.” It goes to show that volunteers are valuable and priceless! NM would not be the same without the thousands of volunteers who give so generously of their time, and it’s because of this selfless commitment that Netball continues to grow in our Zone.

We would like to thank the NM Board members for their support, guidance and professional stewardship they provide to Netball in the Zone.

Finally, our thanks and appreciation to the Netball Mainland staff for their time, unwavering commitment, and exuberant energy for wanting to make our sport even greater each and every day.

MAINLAND TACTIX HEAD COACH REPORT

The 2016 TACTIX finished with an increase in performance by 10% across all areas - we narrowed margins and had more success than before. Two wins and a draw was a huge improvement from the previous year and the most successful since 2009.

On the points ladder, the Tactix finished in 7th overall and 4th in the NZ Conference; an improvement from 2015 and shows some positive ‘traction’ moving forward.

in 2016 we showcased our ‘home grown talent’ with the inclusion of Charlotte Elley and Olivia Coughlan who have come through the Zone Player Development programme, who joined Malawian import and nine returning players.

Left to Right; Gemma Hazeldine, Jess Moulds, Hayley Saunders, Louise Thayer, Mwai Kumwenda (Malawi), Olivia Coughlan, (Captain), Zoe Walker, Bailey Mes, Charlotte Elley, Erikana Pedersen and Nicola Mackle

The 2016 campaign commenced late in 2015 and by early January the girls had ‘hit the ground running’ in preparation for local pre-season derby’s and the Trans-Tasman pre-season in .

The second year of coaching with Assistant Coach Marianne Delaney allowed for a great deal of consistency, combined knowledge, executing new and exciting tactics that would hold the team in good stead for the season.

The goal for 2016 was to be top three in the NZ conference; ensure that we had 12 fit players at the end of the season; that we set the standard for others to come; play like every game was a final game; control our future and to have consistency with what we put out there.

Looking through the results you can see that there were great shifts and tight matches however the result was that we didn’t reach our target of 3rd NZ team in the conference.

Our learnings from the year were that more pressure needed to occur at our trainings so that we were close to our best performance on court. Being within 2% of our best needs to occur always.

The reviews highlighted areas on and off the court for improvement. These ideas have grown and with the change in competition will formulate into an enhanced performance on and off the court for 2017.

I would like to acknowledge Louise Thayer for her outstanding commitment to the Tactix family over the past three years and wish her all the best in the future. Gemma Hazeldine, awaiting the birth of her first baby, which I am sure will come out sprinting or doing press-ups. Mwai Kumwenda who after four years in the Mainland has chosen to go to the Vixens and Bailey Mes who has returned to the Mystics after two years here, deciding to build her combination with Maria Tutia for the Silver Ferns.

Our Performance staff will change with the medical staff coming from Sports Med in 2017. I would like to thank Dr Yasso for her two years with the franchise, the rest of the staff remain the same and our approach will be in alignment to Netball Mainland and the NNZ strategic plan with our own variations as a team.

PERFORMANCE SQUAD Netball Mainland Selectors invited 50 players identified as having potential for higher honours from throughout the Zone into the Performance Squad programme. The players were identified after their performances at school, club and rep fixtures during the year. 45 players accepted and were ready for the first of four workshops scheduled throughout the ‘off season’ from November to April. The workshops are located predominantly in Christchurch with 3 workshops held at the HPSNZ Apollo Centre; a fitting venue for aspiring high performance athletes.

This year the coaches group was extended to include both a level 1 and level 2 programme to also align with Netball New Zealand’s Coach Pathway. The Level 2 coaches benefited from a more hands on coaching opportunity.

The performance squad highlight for the 2016 season was the end of squad camp. Players and coaches had to meet a selection criteria to be invited. The camp focused on a Tactix home game and what ‘Game Day’ involved. All players participated as if they were involved in playing the game.

COMMUNITY NETBALL REPORT

Community in 2016 focused on building capability and relationships with our Centres to ensure that we are all operating in a sustainable environment. The Zone produced a 2% increase in all player numbers in 2016 which is a great building block for the future of our game.

ANZ futureFERNS Once again the work load of our Coach Developers at the start of the year was tremendous with the ANZ futureFERNS programmes established in all Centres. Over 1000 coaches and supporters of ANZ futureFERNS netball attended the various workshops across the Zone as well as offering FUN days, Taster/Info sessions and Festival days. Our participation numbers grew by 30% in the Year 1-4 space which is a true testament to those delivering and promoting the programmes. Sixteen of the eighteen Netball Mainland Zone Centres piloted the 6-aside competition programme for year 5 & 6 players with much success. The 6- aside game has been confirmed as the programme of choice for 2017 onwards for this age group. Centres to introduce this competition in 2017 will be supported with specialised netball bibs.

Thanks to Nelson Netball Centre for hosting the ANZ futureFERNS Zone Festival Day for 2016. Tactix players, Netball Mainland staff and local Centre staff and coaches delivered a fun afternoon for Yr 1-6 players who were enthusiastic participants.

In 2017 Selwyn have hosting rights for this event.

UMPIRE DEVELOPMENT The Zone Umpire Development Group (ZUDG) continues to support Amy with umpiring and game official’s development throughout the Zone. 2016 saw the introduction of the online Zone Theory exam with all theory exams progressing to the online space in 2017. Centre umpire programmes continue to be a targeted area with dwindling umpire numbers throughout the Zone. The continuation of the Centre Support Programme (CSP) provides an avenue for our Centres to receive support, guidance and advice from ZUDG members.

ZUDG Members 2016: Anne Marie Leech (Mid Canterbury), Trudy Eaden, Robyn Daly, Aleisha Whitehead (Christchurch), Andrew Vincent (Nelson), Jose Zandbergen (Sth Canterbury) NZUDG Members 2016: Sheena Tyrell (Mid Canterbury), Sue James (Christchurch)

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS DEVELOPMENT The Zone Technical Officials Development Group (ZTODG) has been a great source of advice, guidance and support for the development of Bench Officials throughout the Zone. Numerous workshops were delivered by the ZTODG throughout the Zone and we were pleased to see the development of five Cadets to Zone level in 2016. ZTODG members 2016: Margaret Marsh, Kay Norris, Maree Morel, Anne Harrison (Christchurch), Claire Lewis (Selwyn), Sandra Munro (Marlborough)

YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP NM’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) was sadly disbanded in 2016 despite an enthusiastic group with great intentions. We will reintroduce the group in 2017 with a new focus and programme outline. NM would like to thank the young women that were a part of the 2015-16 group for all your time and effort.

CENTRE STAGE Centre Stage provides a platform for Centres to share and promote their region across Facebook and Websites each week during the season and we look forward to continuing this each year. It is a great opportunity to see what is happening in and around the Zone and see the different and diverse ways Netball is delivered.

COACH DEVELOPMENT Tammy Mehrtens hit the ground running taking over the Coach Developer reigns from Jen Hooper in April. An endless amount of work has been put in from Tam to deliver a multitude of ANZ futureFERNS and Developing modules, and organising the Advanced Modules for delivery in the Mainland Zone. The Zone would like to acknowledge the local Coach Developers and Centre administration personnel who enable the workshops to be delivered and Coach Development to be supported. (Please refer to the Coach Development Report)

INTERNS We have been fortunate to once again work with NZ Institute of Sport (NZIS) on an Internship programme at Netball Mainland. 2016 saw three new interns come on board to assist Clare Cini the Events Manager with the Mainland Tactix home game set up of the venue and running of the event, as well as assisting Tori Harding with the running of the Zones Holiday Programmes and “in school programmes”. Their input has been extremely valuable and we are fortunate to have built a great relationship with NZIS to continue to provide this opportunity. Lincoln University Student Gabby Thomas also joined the Netball Mainland crew as an Intern from June to November in 2016. We look forward to working with other tertiary institutes in the future.

NETBALL MAINLAND ZONE FORUM

The annual NM Zone Forum was held in Christchurch over the weekend of 8th and 9th October. It was great having everyone together. Thank you for you input, time and passion for our sport.

One of the key themes that was highlighted at the recent NM Zone Forum was ‘Communication’. The desired outcome or goal of any communication process is understanding. We (Zone/Centres/NNZ) all play an important part in ensuring communication is effective and successful – in other words everyone understands. NM have thus identified several opportunities which we hope will aid in ensuring there is more understanding of processes, roles and programmes from now and into the 2017 season.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT Tori Harding joined the Netball Mainland Staff in April 2016 as a part time Junior Development Officer. Tori had the great task of delivering Netball Fundamentals in Primary schools as well as being the contact for ANZ futureFERNS.

Tori delivered netball skill sessions to more than 18,000 Canterbury children in 2016 during curriculum and lunch time visits to Primary and Intermediate schools. She will continue with Netball delivery in school lunchtimes and afterschool in 2017.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMME NM Interns planned and delivered a Holiday Programme in Rolleston during the April school holidays. It was great for these students to plan and implement a project with the support of NM. For the first time we were able to head over to the Coast and run a Holiday Programme in Hokitika with the Coaching expertise of Jess Moulds and Bailey Mes (2016 Tactix players). The programme was well supported by the Community and Centre/s and we look forward to continuing to head further abroad for future programmes.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Block 3 of the Netball Mainland Centre Player Development programme is due for completion in early 2017. This will support the many Centre programmes delivered in 2016 for Yr 5-10 netballers to improve their skills and increase their overall netball readiness. We will continue to review and update the programmes to ensure they are relevant and the best possible source of development for our players. The programmes also allow Coaches to improve and develop without the rigours of competition netball.

We are really pleased with the progress that has been made in the Community space with the adoption of more formalised Community Sport Plans which will allow for greater clarity and focus moving forward. It has been a progressive year in many aspects and we look forward to reaping the rewards in 2017.

COACH DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Early 2015 saw the transition of the CoachForce role/programme from Netball New Zealand (NNZ) to each of the five Zones, in alignment with the Coach Development Framework.

Coach Developer In 2015, Sport New Zealand introduced the Coach Developer Programme, which sought to upskill staff from Regional Sports Organisations and Regional Sports Trusts, who work in coach education. This year Netball Mainland’s Coach Lead and Performance Development Manager were fortunate enough to go through this comprehensive 3-day course with Sport NZ’s expert trainers, where the learnings were focused around how to lead engaging participant centred development opportunities for coaches.

Netball Mainland saw this training format as a key opportunity to be able to extend the reach of coach development in the Zone by offering a local version of the training to a group of 14 talented coaches who were recommended by their centre.

In October, the group of selected coaches came together for a weekend of learning, sharing and development. Netball Mainland was extremely fortunate to have expert assistance in the development and delivery of the course, from Hugh Galvan (Coach Developer Trainer from Sport NZ) and Tania Karauria (National Training Manager from NNZ). This support ensured that the most current coach developer content is being shared and that Netball Mainland are aligning to the national approach and philosophy. The course was based around the outcome of developing confident coach developers. Throughout the weekend, CDs were provided opportunities to practice new knowledge and gain feedback in a safe learning environment. The interactive nature of the course allowed the developers to bounce thoughts off each other and share ideas.

Several guest speakers were also invited to cover key topics that are important for aligning to national best practice, such as Physical Literacy (presented by Susie Stevens from Physical Education NZ) and Netball Smart Injury Prevention (presented by Sharon Kearny).

Netball Mainland are thrilled with the ‘buzz’ surrounding coach development moving into 2017, where the new developers will have opportunities to co-deliver workshops which will then see them accredited and able to deliver in their local centres. In previous years there were very few trained coach developers in the zone to cater for the many coaches across the 18 centres, so it is an exciting prospect that coach development opportunities will be more readily available.

High School Coaches This year Netball Mainland has had the chance to get out and about and observe many of our talented secondary school students who are giving coaching a go. Many secondary schools across the country have taken up the Sport New Zealand initiative called “Growing Coaches”, which supports students to learn about coaching as part of their NCEA studies, as well as coach junior teams to get the practical experience needed. These students work alongside coach developers in their chosen sport to upskill in the sport specific knowledge and understanding.

This initiative has allowed Netball Mainland work with over 50 students who then went on to coach netball in various Christchurch and Tasman schools. It is fantastic to see such a growth in the number of young netball coaches in our region, and Netball Mainland hope that by supporting these students, they will continue to coach within clubs once they have left school.

University of Canterbury Coaching Degree 2016 has seen the placement of a record number of University of Canterbury Coaching students in many Christchurch Primary Schools by Sport Canterbury. Sixteen of these coaches have chosen netball as their sport to coach, and Netball Mainland are now working closely with the University to support and develop them throughout their three-year degree. A framework has been developed to get these coaches on the Netball New Zealand Community Coach Award pathway and to offer other opportunities that will help them grow and progress in their netball coaching.

ANZ futureFerns Coaching ANZ futureFerns has had a huge impact on coaching in 2016, with over 1000 module attendees upskilling around the exciting new programme and game. This is a 212% increase on 2015 numbers at this level. A large amount of these numbers have come from Primary School teachers who are working with year 5 and 6 netball teams, as Primary School Sport Canterbury this year made the change to the 6v6 game in their weekly school’s competition. The feedback from schools has been on the whole, very positive.

Netball New Zealand Coach Development Modules This year Netball Mainland have seen 546 attendees at Netball New Zealand developing modules. It is fantastic to see so many of these coaches showing a real commitment to taking their coaching to the next level. Netball Mainland are confident that this number will grow again in 2017 with the addition of 14 new coach developers.

Congratulations to the 69 new coaches who have completed their Community Coach Award in 2016. Netball Mainland staff thoroughly enjoyed CCA weekends and evenings across the zone and are also thrilled that Hayley, Anna, Nic, Erikana, Charlotte and Zoe from the Mainland Tactix team have also completed the award this year.

Netball New Zealand Coach Lead Team. Just as coaches enjoy development opportunities, the five Coach Leads (one in each zone) do as well. Netball New Zealand’s national training manager Tania Karauria has brought this team together throughout the year to learn and share ideas. The focus has been on collaboration, sharing best practice and forming a strong team that will utilise each other’s strengths to enhance coach development across the country. A major priority for 2016 has been to review and update many of the Netball New Zealand Developing modules so that they align with the new Coach Developer approach. This involves ensuring that coaches at each course have more ownership and involvement in how the workshop runs as well as having plenty of opportunities to practice new learning and receive feedback. The updated modules will be released to coach developers at the Netball New Zealand forum in early February.

”Stronger Together Roadshow” During August, Tactix Head Coach Sue Hawkins and Netball Mainland Coach Lead Tammy Mehrtens hit the road and travelled to five of Netball Mainland’s Centres to offer players one-on-one coaching with their shooting technique and to offer coaches tips and ideas around creating strong defensive pressure. Throughout the month Sue worked with almost 60 young shooters and over 150 coaches in South Canterbury, Christchurch, North Canterbury, Hurunui, Blenheim and Nelson. Sue is enthusiastic about getting out into the community and sharing coaching tools and her expertise were gratefully received by the coaches in attendance which was evident in the extremely positive feedback received in the follow up survey. Netball Mainland have also produced a video encompassing some of the key activities that were delivered during the roadshow for coaches who attended to utilise.

Planning for 2017 During the off-season Netball Mainland staff have enjoyed traveling around the Zone to meet with Centres and discuss their needs and ideas for the 2017 season. Netball Mainland are excited to get into the 2017 season and continue working alongside all of the incredibly talented and passionate coaches, mentors and coach developers across the zone.

AUDIT & RISK COMMITTEE REPORT For the year ending 30 November 2016

COMMITTEE PURPOSE

The purpose of the Audit and Risk Committee is to provide the board with assurance that:  All financial matters and prepared financial reports and statements comply with accounting standards, are true and fair and are not misleading (to extent it is able given the role of NNZ Shared Services contract; and  Prudent and appropriate financial management is maintained  An appropriate system of internal controls operates by Netball Mainland; and  All material risks are identified and appropriately managed

COMMITTEE REPORT The FY16 financial year has been one of greater financial stability for Netball Mainland than has been the case in recent years, but still came with its challenges and the need to maintain tight fiscal controls and risk management. By and large the relationships across the Zone, between Centres and Netball Mainland, are in very good health and although there is always more to do, the community aspects of our Zone are very pleasing. The focus on implementing the Whole of Netball Plan is progressing well with positive engagement at all levels and the majority of community Netball objectives being met or exceeded. Notable during the year was the disestablishment of the Trans-Tasman Netball competition (ANZ Championship) and the initial uncertainty for the franchise that came with the announcement. The subsequent confirmation of a new domestic ANZ Premiership (ANZP) Netball Competition and associated Beko League was welcome news but at the time there was still considerable uncertainty around the participation agreement, central sponsorship and funding from Netball NZ and the details of the sixth franchise team. Suffice it to say that most of those aspects were subsequently resolved, though the confirmation of the sponsorships remained a concern. With the winding up of the trans-Tasman competition, Netball Mainland was faced with the payment of the outstanding historical debt the entity assumed when the new Zone had been established. However, we were pleased that NNZ were able to secure an agreement with Netball , as co-owners of the trans-Tasman entity, Trans-Tasman Netball Limited, to have the debt written off, which was very welcome news. Thank you to NNZ for your advocacy and support. An on-going challenge has been raising cash sponsorship, which has been a consistent theme for a number of years. Although Netball Mainland has been the recipient of a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor, which did alleviate some of the fiscal pressure, the Board and management have continued to canvas all avenues and leads to increase the family of sponsors and, particularly, secure a much-needed naming rights sponsor for the 2017 competition.

Netball Mainland Annual Report 2016 34

To that end, Netball Mainland appointed a new Commercial Manager, Steve Brooker, to support the sponsorship efforts and the Board established a Sponsorship sub-committee to ensure renewed focus on the sponsorship needs. Outside of sponsorship, Gaming Trust funding has continued to be a key revenue source, though Netball Mainland has a number of requests declined, especially where individual Centres and/or clubs have also applied to the same trusts. Feedback we have continued to receive from certain trusts indicate a lack of understanding of the focus of the various netball entities and confusion that has resulted. This continues to be addressed, as best it can be, by meeting with funders to explain the differences. Financial Position The overall financial position for Netball Mainland was a surplus of $157k which was particularly pleasing as the original full year budget and subsequent reforecasts during the year had indicated a loss. It cannot be overstated the financial prudence and controls that have been put in place to ensure expenditure has been kept in check and revenue opportunities realised. Again, though, the position has certainly been made more achievable with the benefactor’s support, something we cannot rely on in the future. The Board has been advised that the benefactor will continue to support for the next fiscal year, which is fantastic news, however, the expectation of the Board and the benefactor themselves, is that this is a ‘hand-up’ not a ‘hand-out’ and, therefore, work must and will continue to secure more sustainable revenue sources for the future. Most notable of the financial controls during the year has been tight cashflow management, essential when we have large cash expenditure items. Through careful management the accounts reflect a healthy cash position at year end, which means FY17 starts in a similarly good state. The budget for FY17 reflects the on-going need to be prudent in expenditure and revenue, with budgeted expenditure below FY16 and revenue in-line with the actuals realised in FY16. As above, the on-going focus on cash sponsorship is critical to achieve the budgeted revenue. Engagement with NNZ In last years’ report the Committee noted the strained relationship that had existed with Netball New Zealand at various times throughout the year. The Committee is pleased to report that is no longer the case. Certainly with changes in personnel some of the issues have abated but without question the on- going focus on working with NNZ and building on the communication and engagement that has occurred in the last year is a key reason for the renewed healthy relationship the Zone has with its parent. Risk Register With the various changes of the trans-Tasman competition the Committee reviewed the Risk Register on a number of occasions during the year and with the wider Board and CEO, a number of additional measures were put in place to mitigate the identified risks. The most recent update was being made as the fiscal year closed, and at that time there were only two “red flag” areas of concern: 1. Further support from the beneficiary, which has since resolved; 2. Confirmation of ANZP sponsors, which was tying up a number of key sponsorship categories, preventing Netball Mainland from furthering its own potential opportunities.

The latter has been particularly problematic as the Zone is left with little time to secure sponsors in categories which then become available to us. The Committee acknowledges the difficulty NNZ has had in Netball Mainland Annual Report 2016 35

this regard, particularly, with the new ANZP. The risk was mitigated to a certain extent by the good engagement with NNZ and the notice of the intention to release categories by agreed dates. This aspect was also a subject of discussion of the participation agreement. Netball Mainland is extremely grateful to have received financial support from commercial partners, funders, NNZ, TTNL and our anonymous benefactor.
