The challengers took part in the 262ft abseil climbing down the UK’s tallest sculpture. Among the participants were two members of St Clare Hospice staff - chef Samantha Hegarty and inpatient unit nursing assistant Alison Boggas. Samantha, who has worked at the hospice since 2014, took part with her sister, Debbie. The pair have raised a combined total of over £1,500, smashing their target of £400. Samantha said: "Abseiling the Orbit was one of the scariest yet most incredible experiences of my life! I don’t have a fear of heights but I do have a fear of falling so completing the highest freefall abseil in the UK was quite an achievement. "My sister and I abseiled together and we were laughing all the way down. "The view of London from the top was incredible. I really recommend abseiling the Orbit to anyone who likes a challenge and who has a good head for heights, or wants to overcome their fear of heights!" DISTRICT: Voluntary Action seeks Tesco votes 9.41am - 31st August 2017 VOLUNTARY Action Epping Forest Volunteer Centre is hoping for a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork for its community funding scheme which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 - raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - awarded to local community projects. Voluntary Action Epping Forest Volunteer Centre is one of the groups on the shortlist for funding with votes to be cast throughout September and October at the Tesco stores in Epping, Ongar and Theydon Bois. The Volunteer Centre is part of a network of nationwide independent network of agencies that act as 'matchmakers' for people seeking volunteering opportunities in not-for-profit and charity groups needing volunteers. The Tesco funding will enable the Volunteer Centre to reach more potential volunteers and increase its recruitment of volunteers for community groups in the area. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the checkout in store each time they shop. GCSEs: Braeside achieves "excellent" results 8.13am - 30th August 2017 BRAESIDE School is celebrating "excellent" GCSE results after 90 per cent of grades achieved were at A* to C, or at grade 4 and above in English and Maths. Nearly half of all grades, 47 per cent, were either A* or A. Again the pupils achieved particularly well in Sciences with 100 per cent passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Other subjects with 100 per cent passes include Art, Drama, Geography and RS. Headmistress Claire Osborn said: "This is an excellent set of results and a testament to the students' hard work and commitment as well as the dedication and expertise of their teachers. "The students leave Braeside to join some outstanding schools and colleges, including some scholarships to local independent schools and I am confident they will continue to build on this remarkable success in their Sixth Forms." The St Mary's Hope Centre will open its doors to the public on Saturday, September 16, when there will be an official opening at 1.30pm during the Love Loughton Fun Day. Love Loughton runs from noon until 4pm. Members of the public are invited to attend. Building work on the new centre started in July last year. The Hope Centre, which is attached to the main church building via a glazed link, offers a large hall, meeting room, catering facilities and counselling room. The centre will offer a range of services to the local community, including Loughton Foodbank, Christian counselling, toddler groups and youth work, and activities for the elderly and isolated. The Hope Centre is also available for lettings. St Mary'svicar Rev'd Malcolm Macdonald said: "After a year of building we are so excited to be able to open the Hope Centre at the heart of the High Road in Loughton. Staff News This year we shall be saying farewell to several staff. Mrs Watson, Deputy Head and Year 6 teacher will be retiring after 18 years loyal service. We shall miss her input into all areas of school life and the tremendous care that she has put into the teaching of her classes. After 4 years working as our Head of Early Years, Mrs Pettigrew has decided to retire to the New Forest. I am grateful for both of their hard work over the years and wish them well as they move slowly towards life beyond Coopersale Hall and retirement. I shall be announcing Mrs Watson’s successor shortly. Mrs Pettigrew’s successor will be Miss Charlotte Gowland. Miss Gowland has had a wide range of experience teaching nursery and reception children both in this country and abroad. She is joining us from the CHAT Academy Trust where she has been in charge of the 4-form entry reception year, as well as being PGCE mentor. Mrs Mottram will also be leaving Coopersale Hall at the end of the academic year and I would like to thank her for her dedication to the children throughout her eight years with us.

  • 1 Finding Wroth's Loughton Hall SUSIE WEST the Open University
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Open Research Online Finding Wroth’s Loughton Hall SUSIE WEST The Open University Lady Mary Sidney Wroth, daughter of Penshurst Place, Kent, made her marital home at Loughton Hall, Essex, and remained there as a widow until her own death in 1651.1 The house was burnt down in 1836, and little is known of its appearance or history. This is a loss in two major respects. Firstly, as the home of a major literary figure whose work draws heavily on her life, we might expect that the home environment she created was both shaped by and informed her evocation of place and space in her work. This is not to suggest that literary work can be read back into the built environment, but Loughton Hall should take its place amongst the houses within the Sidney circle: Penshurst Place, Wilton House and Houghton Conquest House, for example. There is more to say about its landscape setting. Secondly, Wroth had a role in remodeling the old house, and there is a tantalizing but unproven association with Inigo Jones, known to Wroth from the Court. This provides the second theme for this discussion, the Court and the classical tradition in architecture. The early decades of the seventeenth century in England are distinguished by what might be called a ‘classical turn’ in building, in the form of heightened awareness of and interest in the theory and practice of architecture as inherited from Italy and a Roman past.
