ZELLA GOLDFINGER AND ABBY DOFT TO RECEIVE FOURTEENTH ANNUAL

The Officers and Executive Committee of the Congregation are pleased to announce that the Fourteenth Annual Judith Kaufman Hurwich Keter Torah Award will be presented to Zella Goldfinger and Abby Doft on the second day of Shavuot, Monday, June 13, 9:00 AM. The practice of conferring such an award is to appropriately recognize women in our congregation on the holiday when we celebrate the lives of two great Jewish heroines, Naomi and Ruth. It offers us an opportunity, as part of a religious ceremony, to express our appreciation for the services rendered to our community by women. The award is named in memory of Judith Kaufman Hurwich, the daughter of Rita and Benjamin Kaufman, of blessed memory, the mother of our member - yibadeil l’chaim - Adam Hurwich, and the grandmother of three former Ramaz students:Talia, Leah, and Zev Hurwich. Her family continues her tradition of association with KJ and Ramaz in fostering opportunities for women to study Torah. ella Goldfinger truly wears a keter (crown of long. Our Dear Friends at KJ,

I am writing five months after the murder of our children, Rav Eitam and Naama Henkin. Though reeling from grief, we are overwhelmed by your generosity and do not know how even to begin to express our gratitude to you. First and foremost, you have secured the future of our four grandchildren. When Itamar, the youngest of our four grandsons, will be 20, I will at best be near ninety. You have given our family the wherewithal to raise Matan, Nitzan, Neta and Itamar, and also to assure that they will start out securely in adult life. By doing so, you have given Yehuda and me some peace of mind in a time of greater grief than we could ever have imagined. In my mind, I speak with our murdered son and daughter-in-law daily. I tell them: Don’t worry about your children’s future bacause Rabbi Lookstein and the members of KJ have taken care of your children. Your uniting behind us gives us comfort beyond the practical consequences. Eitam and Naama were incredible parents and Eitam had tremendous promise as a rabbinic scholar and leader of rare brilliance and integrity, with the ability to reach a very broad swath of our people. Perhaps fifty fruitful years were sheared off their lives, as well as the ability to raise their children. Seven-year-old Nitzan’s first words to the rescuers were: “Are we now orphans?” If there can be any nechama for us, it is that this unthinkable act was not random but a dreadful piece of the struggle of the Jewish people for our homeland; a struggle that did not begin yesterday and will not, unfortunately, end tomorrow. Your solidarity with us underscores for us that we are living a destiny and a struggle with purpose. Rabbi Lookstein told me he made no direct efforts to solicit the funds for us. I answered him: You worked for decades to inspire your congregation with a love of Israel and a commitment to kol Yisrael arevim zeh lazeh, that all Jews are responsible for each other, and to human decency. Dear members of KJ, we have for years been partners energizing each other in changing the landscape for women in Torah scholarship and leadership. Today, dear sisters and brothers, in our time of grief, you inspire us to continue. God bless you. May Am Yisrael know only smachot.

Thanks to everyone who came out to honor Rabbi Lookstein! The Year Ahead On March 11, UJA@KJ in partnership with Natan@Ramaz, is launching the first ever long-term chesed project that will involve each of the Ramaz schools. The “Just One Bracha” campaign will begin with a brachathon in the ECC and Lower School. Each bracha and amen will raise money to purchase kosher for Pesach food. Once the campaign ends, middle school students will package it into easy-to-deliver packages, and high school students will then deliver the packages to New York’s most impoverished Jews. This program will allow Ramaz students to see the fruits of their labor from start to finish. From “Just One Bracha” can come so many incredible things! We also have a Mitzvah Monday coming up on March 21. We’ll be volunteering with the students at Educational Alliance’s Head Start program, helping make a difference in the lives of the poorest children in New York. Our final Mitzvah Monday will take place on May 16, where we’ll serve a meal to the seniors at Project ORE. UJA@KJ is a partnership between KJ and UJA-Federation of New York that aims to strengthen our local community through meaningful programs and volunteer opportunities. For more information about UJA@KJ or any of these programs, please contact the UJA@KJ Chairs, Talya Kaye at [email protected], Lani Kollander at [email protected], or Jen Yashar at [email protected]
