14 Augmenting Data Structures Some engineering situations require no more than a “textbook” data struc- ture—such as a doubly linked list, a hash table, or a binary search tree—but many others require a dash of creativity. Only in rare situations will you need to cre- ate an entirely new type of data structure, though. More often, it will suffice to augment a textbook data structure by storing additional information in it. You can then program new operations for the data structure to support the desired applica- tion. Augmenting a data structure is not always straightforward, however, since the added information must be updated and maintained by the ordinary operations on the data structure. This chapter discusses two data structures that we construct by augmenting red- black trees. Section 14.1 describes a data structure that supports general order- statistic operations on a dynamic set. We can then quickly find the ith smallest number in a set or the rank of a given element in the total ordering of the set. Section 14.2 abstracts the process of augmenting a data structure and provides a theorem that can simplify the process of augmenting red-black trees. Section 14.3 uses this theorem to help design a data structure for maintaining a dynamic set of intervals, such as time intervals. Given a query interval, we can then quickly find an interval in the set that overlaps it. 14.1 Dynamic order statistics Chapter 9 introduced the notion of an order statistic. Specifically, the ith order statistic of a set of n elements, where i 2 f1;2;:::;ng, is simply the element in the set with the ith smallest key. -

Persistent Predecessor Search and Orthogonal Point Location on the Word RAM∗ Timothy M. Chan† August 17, 2012 Abstract We answer a basic data structuring question (for example, raised by Dietz and Raman [1991]): can van Emde Boas trees be made persistent, without changing their asymptotic query/update time? We present a (partially) persistent data structure that supports predecessor search in a set of integers in 1,...,U under an arbitrary sequence of n insertions and deletions, with O(log log U) { } expected query time and expected amortized update time, and O(n) space. The query bound is optimal in U for linear-space structures and improves previous near-O((log log U)2) methods. The same method solves a fundamental problem from computational geometry: point location in orthogonal planar subdivisions (where edges are vertical or horizontal). We obtain the first static data structure achieving O(log log U) worst-case query time and linear space. This result is again optimal in U for linear-space structures and improves the previous O((log log U)2) method by de Berg, Snoeyink, and van Kreveld [1995]. The same result also holds for higher-dimensional subdivisions that are orthogonal binary space partitions, and for certain nonorthogonal planar subdivisions such as triangulations without small angles. Many geometric applications follow, including improved query times for orthogonal range reporting for dimensions 3 on the RAM. ≥ Our key technique is an interesting new van-Emde-Boas–style recursion that alternates be- tween two strategies, both quite simple. 1 Introduction Van Emde Boas trees [60, 61, 62] are fundamental data structures that support predecessor searches in O(log log U) time on the word RAM with O(n) space, when the n elements of the given set S come from a bounded integer universe 1,...,U (U n). -

In this paper a data structure for the representation of mergeable heaps and min-max heaps without using pointers is introduced. The supported operations are: Insert, DeleteMax, DeleteMin, FindMax, FindMin, Merge, NewHeap, DeleteHeap. The structure is analyzed in terms of amortized time complexity, resulting in a O(1) amortized time for each operation except for Insert, for which a O(lg n) bound holds. 1. Introduction The use of pointers in data structures seems to contribute quite significantly to the design of efficient algorithms for data access and management. Implicit data structures [ 131 have been introduced in order to evaluate the impact of the absence of pointers on time efficiency. Traditionally, implicit data structures have been mostly studied for what concerns the dictionary problem, both in l-dimensional [4,5,9, 10, 141, and in multi- dimensional space [l]. In such papers, the maintenance of a single dictionary has been analyzed, not considering the case in which several instances of the same structure (i.e. several dictionaries) have to be represented and maintained at the same time and within the same array-structured memory. -

These floor plans are modeled by polygons, with guards represented by points inside these shapes. Shortly after the creation of the problem, it was theorized that for guards whose positions were limited to the polygon’s j n k vertices, 3 guards are sufficient to watch any type of polygon, where n is the number of the polygon’s vertices. Two proofs accompanied this theorem, drawing from concepts of computational geometry and graph theory. -

§1. Keyed Search Structures Lecture III Page 1 Lecture III BALANCED SEARCH TREES Anthropologists inform that there is an unusually large number of Eskimo words for snow. The Computer Science equivalent of snow is the tree word: we have (a,b)-tree, AVL tree, B-tree, binary search tree, BSP tree, conjugation tree, dynamic weighted tree, finger tree, half-balanced tree, heaps, interval tree, kd-tree, quadtree, octtree, optimal binary search tree, priority search tree, R-trees, randomized search tree, range tree, red-black tree, segment tree, splay tree, suffix tree, treaps, tries, weight-balanced tree, etc. The above list is restricted to trees used as search data structures. If we include trees arising in specific applications (e.g., Huffman tree, DFS/BFS tree, Eskimo:snow::CS:tree alpha-beta tree), we obtain an even more diverse list. The list can be enlarged to include variants + of these trees: thus there are subspecies of B-trees called B - and B∗-trees, etc. The simplest search tree is the binary search tree. It is usually the first non-trivial data structure that students encounter, after linear structures such as arrays, lists, stacks and queues. Trees are useful for implementing a variety of abstract data types. We shall see that all the common operations for search structures are easily implemented using binary search trees. Algorithms on binary search trees have a worst-case behaviour that is proportional to the height of the tree. The height of a binary tree on n nodes is at least lg n . We say that a family of binary trees is balanced if every tree in the family on n nodes has⌊ height⌋ O(log n). -

6.851: Advanced Data Structures Spring 2010 Lecture 4 — February 11, 2010 Prof. Andr´eSchulz Scribe: Peter Caday 1 Overview In the previous lecture, we studied range trees and kd-trees, two structures which support efficient orthogonal range queries on a set of points. In this second of four lectures on geometric data structures, we will tie up a loose end from the last lecture — handling insertions and deletions. The main topic, however, will be two new structures addressing the vertical line stabbing problem: interval trees and segment trees. We will conclude with an application of vertical line stabbing to a windowing problem. 2 Dynamization In our previous discussion of range trees, we assumed that the point set was static. On the other hand, we may be interested in supporting insertions and deletions as time progresses. Unfortunately, it is not trivial to modify our data structures to handle this dynamic scenario. We can, however, dynamize them using general techniques; the techniques and their application here are due to Overmars [1]. Idea. Overmars’ dynamization is based on the idea of decomposable searches. A search (X,q) for the value q among the keys X is decomposable if the search result can be obtained in O(1) time from the results of searching (X1,q) and (X2,q), where X1 ∪ X2 = X. For instance, in the 2D kd-tree, the root node splits R2 into two halves. If we want to search for all points lying in a rectangle q, we may do this by combining the results of searching for q in each half. -
