The Club Executive is pleased to announce the appointment of Aisling Deignan as Rúnaí CLG Na Fianna. At last Tuesday night’s Executive Committee meeting, Aisling was co-opted as Club Secretary, the position having arisen following the sudden passing of our dear friend Deirdre Lamb.

Steeped in the tradition and culture of Na Fianna, a club member since childhood and currently mentor to the U-15 Girls, Aisling is also a Junior Footballer and occasional Rounders player. In addition, Aisling currently holds the prestigious title of Na Fianna Mayor. The Executive Committee joins with all Na Fianna members to wish Aisling every success in her new role.

Important Reminder for Managers & Mentors

As we have all been reminded by recent high profile media articles and the enactment of new child protection legislation, the issue of how clubs deal with juveniles is again, correctly, brought front of mind. As mentors, we give a significant amount of our time attempting to positively nurture our juveniles to become the best they can be both on and off the field of play. There is little greater privilege (along with some frustration!) than being afforded this opportunity.

Along with this great privilege comes responsibility and adherence to some basic procedures which are designed to protect both juveniles and mentors. In order to ensure we maintain our club standards and to comply with the requirements of the GAA/LFGA and Camogie Association - can I remind ALL mentors of the following:

1. No mentor should at any stage be left unaccompanied in the company of a juvenile, other than their own off-spring. This includes lifts to and from games.

2. Under no circumstance should any mentor be in direct private contact (by messaging in any form or by phone) with a minor. (i.e. Boy or Girl, under 18 ) Messages posted in group/public fora are permitted to be shared with minors but only with written parental consent - direct communication may not occur. (See Juvenile Handbook - Communications Pg14)

While, for those of us who grew up in a different era, these may seem excessive in some instances for older groups - there are extremely good reasons for these rules in order to protect the wellbeing of BOTH the mentor and juveniles. These matters are not for interpretation and there can be no exceptions.

For adult mentors please be aware that the above applies to all players on your panel under 18.

Le meas,

Lesley Jamieson, Childrens Officer, CLG Na Fianna.

Rounders News

All three Na Fianna Rounders Adults teams (Women, Men and Mixed) played Limekiln (Dublin) last Sunday 13th May. The games were played in perfect conditions on back pitch Mobhi Rd. Congratulations to all players - fantastic team spirit both on and off the field. Great to see Jean Fearon and Michéal Geoghegan back, good to get Perry Kalk into the action and to also welcome Gary Kelly. Hats off to the Women who made Limekiln work hard for their win (18-13 being a very respectable score against such an experienced team).

Patsy In Print!

Congratulations to retired club barman Pat Sullivan who has taken to the pen. Regular Nuacht readers will recall an earlier article penned by Patsy recounting his time fronting the Na Fianna bar when in the course of a night’s duty he might assume the role of confidante, psychologist, medical doctor, political scientist, meteorologist, economist and many more depending on the circumstances. Since then, Patsy has gone on to be a published author and the story reproduced below appeared in a recent edition of Ireland’s Own. When questioned about potential film rights, Patsy gave that usual cunning smile and said……….. absolutely nothing. Film rights apart, you can expect to see more from Patsy, our retired club barman and now a published author.

Well done to Senior Camogie player Tino Kelly who recently braved the river Liffey to rescue a lady in difficulty. In an instinctive move, Garda Kelly, an accomplished swimmer and lifesaver, took to the water without a thought. Nice one Tino!
