SUMMARY

The 295 species of bryophytes, 177 mosses and 118 hepatics are reported for the first time to the state of Espirito Santa, Brazil. All previously known species are cited, too, so that here is given a complete checklist of the bryophyte flora of Espirito San to. The genera Aongstroemia, Chenia, and Chrysoblastella. the species Aongslroemia orientalis Mitt., Barhula indiccl (Hook.) Spreng .. Chenia rhizophylla (Sak.) Zand .. Chrysoblastella chi/ensi:; (Mont.) Reim .. Grimmia ovalis (Hedw.) Lindb., Racomitrium crispipilum (Tayl.) Jaeg., R. clIeul/atifolium Hampe, Rigodium IOxarion (Schwacgr.) Schimp .. Sphagnum slriclUll1 Sull., Z ygodon viridissimus (Dicks.) Brid., Ceplwl!da crossii Spruce, Lejelmea gomphoealyx Spruce, and Reclolejeunea brittoniae Evans are firs tly reported for Brazi l. Rhizogonium sublimbatum Crum. Tortula amphidiacea (c. Mull.) Broth., and Leucolejeunea conchifolia (Evans) Evans seem to be new to South America. Onc new combination. Sematophyl/lIm crlindrothecium (Broth.) Buck & Schiifer-Verw. is proposed.

INTRODUCTION The bryophyte flora of Espirito San to (ES) is very poorly known. Only 31 species (22 mosses and 9 hepatics) are mentioncd in various literature. The first literature report dates from 1923 by Luetzelburg, followed by Brotherus (1924), Herzog (1925), Vital ( 1974), Gradstein (1975), Yano (1975), Reese and Griffin (1977), Manuel (1977), Frahm (1979), Yano (1979, 1981b, 1984b, 1986, 1987), Buck (1985), Yano, Pirani, and Santos (1985), Crum (1987), Pursell (1989), Schiifer-Verwimp and Vital (1989), and Schiifer-Verwimp (1989). The state of ES with its capital Vitoria has an area of 45597 km 2 (= 0,53% of Brazil) and lies on the Atlantic coast approximately between Ir55' to 21 °18'S and 39°41 ' to 41 °52'W. The population had reached 14,6 million in 2 1985, with 320 in habitants per km . Humid coasts and a mountainous interior are caracteristic of the region. At the border of M inas Gerais the Serra do Caparao (National Park) with the Pico da Bandeira (2890 m elev.) is situated. In the li ttoral areas the tropical climate is predominant with annual temperatures between 22° and 24°C and annual rainfall of ca 1500 mm, in the valley of Rio Doce less than 1000 mm, around Pedra Azul (see coll ection sites) about 2000 mm. Most of the rainfall is registered in summer. In the high mountain zone of the Serra do Caparao the annual temperature lies between 16°

I Colegio Visconde de Porto Seguro, Rua Clementine Brenne 30, BR-05659 Sao Paulo/ Brazil. 148 Journ. Hatlori Bot. Lab. No. 69 I 9 9 I and 18°C, with temperatures below zero in winter. The mountainous region previously was covered with evergreen rain forest. Indeed some years ago it was established that during the last 18 years 28000 km 2 from a total of 38000 km 2 of rain forest have been completely destroyed, and the destruction is continuing (Journal " Dialogo Medico, Ano 12, 1986: 5- 9, without author). We, too, have observed many areas recently cleared by fire, and most of the few remaining wooded areas are of secondary nature. Our collections (more than 680 collection numbers) have originated mainly from the mountainous region between Vitoria, Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, and the Serra do Caparao. They were made by the author and his wife Inge Verwimp in July 1987, October 1988, July 1989, and July 1990. The main collection sites are indicated in fig. Each previously known species is listed, too, with references, so here is given a complete checklist of the bryophytes of ES hitherto known. The cited collection numbers all are deposited in the private herbarium of the a uthor. Duplicate specimens are deposited in different herbaria of the specialists respectively, partially in SP. The system of classification of the Hepa ticopsida used is based on Schuster (1979), while for the Bryopsida Vitt (1984) was followed (with slight alterations).

GRIMMIACEAE * Grimmia ovalis (Hedw.) Lindb. Caparao 2, on exposed rocks, c. spor., 11506, del. Griffin, Ill. Widely distributed in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America. Seems to be new to Brazil. * Racomitrillm crilpipilum (Tayl.) Jaeg. Caparao 2, on exposed rocks, 11498, det. Griffin, Ill. Widely distributed from Costa Rica southward to Tierra del Fuego along the Andes. Reitz (1954) reported R. crispu/um (Hook. f. & Wils.) Dix. from South Brazil (Santa Catarina) . R. crispipilum earlier was regarded as a synonym of R. crispu/um. I have not seen the specimens reported by Reitz, but they probably belong to R. crispipi/um. * R. cucullatifolium Hampe. Caparao I, on exposed rock, sometimes submerged, 11523, det. Griffin, Ill. Previously known only from Andean South America. New to Brazil, and the first rccord outside the Andes.
