BCFC Week 5 Summary By Ryan Watters BCFC Media Coordinator

The home teams would prevail in Week 5 of the BCFC as the Raiders, Rams and Rebels all held serve as only one team remains undefeated as the Conference hits the halfway point.

In Nanaimo the final two undefeated teams would square off in a rematch of the 2010 Cullen Cup. It was another classic game between the Okanagan Sun and Vancouver Island Raiders with the home team recording a 33-20 victory to take sole possession of top spot in the Conference.

The first half was an up and down battle as the Raiders scored first on their first two possessions before the Sun rattled off 17 unanswered points and led at halftime 17- 14. In the second half the Raiders would outscore the Sun 19-3 on route to the win. Photo courtesy of Mijen Multimedia

The Raiders amassed 554 yards of total offence in a very balanced attack. The aerial assault was led by quarterback Jordan Yantz. He would finish 20 of 28 for 300 yards and four more touchdown passes. He would find five different receivers including Michael Schaper who caught a game high seven passes for 137 yards and had a major. Whitman Tomusiak had five catches for 72 yards and a score. On the ground the BCFC’s leading rusher was outstanding as Jordan Botel carried 24 times for 165 yards. He would add two catches for 13 yards and had a touchdown. Rookie Ashton Galloway was very effective with eight carries for 61 yards.

The Raiders defence was solid and would hurry the Sun offense the majority of the afternoon. They would force three interceptions as Adam Laurensse, Ariel Fabbro and Glenn Boyce would pick off passes. Nick Woznesensky made five tackles and Ash Gayat had the only sack and two tackles.

The Raiders enter the bye week 5-0 and have won 40 straight games at home. Following the bye, they’ll host the 3-2 Rebels.

The Sun drop to 4-1 after their first loss of the season. After trailing 14-0 after the Raiders first two possessions the Sun would throw for the majority of the game compiling 279 yards of total offense, 249 of which was from the passing game. Jeremy Mraovic would make his second BCFC start after a week 3 injury to Bobby Davis. Mraovic had a defender in his face for most of the game, but finished 14 of 26 for 249 yards and threw one touchdown pass and score another with his feet. Tommy Howes caught four balls for 49 yards, and Ben White caught three passes for 120 yards including a 92 yard touchdown pass.

On the ground the Sun would carry 12 times, six by Mraovic for 21 yards and a one yard touchdown plunge. The other six carries were by Arman Bokitch for just 13 yards.

Kicker Steve McFadyen added to the scoring with two field goals, from 12 and 35 yards out.

The Sun defence forced two turnovers as Brandon Donkers had a pick and Beau Barthel jumped on a fumble. Evin Polak had eight tackles and four assists, while Robbie Yochim and Tynan Pearce each had six tackles and one assist. Jordan Pfieffer had the only sack for the Sun.

The Sun will host the 0-5 Chilliwack Huskers when play resumes on Sunday September 11 at the Apple Bowl.

Also on the Island on Saturday afternoon the Westshore Rebels recorded their third win of the year and first BCFC shutout beating the Kamloops Broncos 47-0.

The Rebels would use the run game to and pound away at the Broncos. They would use nine different ball carriers and tallied 423 yards on the ground. Greg Morris was unstoppable with 13 carries for 259 yards and four touchdowns; his longest being a 100 yard scamper. Andre Skinner ran four times for 35 yards and quarterback Cat Todorovich would call his own number five times for 32 yards.

Through the air the Rebels would gain 148 yards as Todorovich would finish eight of 20 and had one TD pass. Kyle Pich would record the major on just two catches for 45 yards. Vinnie Cannata had two catches for 49 yards.

Kicker Quinn Van Gylswyck was perfect on three kicks from 17, 36 and 40 yards out.

Defensively the Rebels would force three turnovers, highlighted by two interceptions by Dane Douglas. Chris McCormick forced a fumble and Shane Little would jump on it. Justin Perrie had three tackles, one assist and a half sack to lead the club.

The Rebels sit in third place with a 3-2 record at the halfway point. They’ll visit the Raiders when the schedule resumes after Labour Day.

The Broncos were frustrated gaining 187 yards of total offence. The passing game was stymied as Drew Jacobson was seven of 19 for 81 yards. Sean Poeppel would make two catches for 49 yards and Adam Nesbitt would also make two catches for 21 yards.

On the ground the Broncos would rush 27 times for 117 yards. Mike McMaster carried 13 times for 54 yards and Joel Mukendei had four touches for 33 yards...30 of which was on one carry. The Broncos “D” spent the majority of the game on the field, but would create five turnovers. Mitch Day had an interception and would recover a fumble. It’s the 10th recovery in his career which places him second all time in BCFC history. The record is 13 held by former Tri-City Bulldog Matt Begley. Defensive back Scott Nelson also intercepted a pass. Drew Markortoff and Ben Hoffman recovered the other two Rebel fumbles. Clayton Ludba recorded another four tackles while five other players had multi-tackle games.

Following the bye week the 1-4 Broncos stay on the road and visit the 2-3 Langley Rams.

The Saturday night cap saw another lopsided score as the Langley Rams recorded their first home win of the season beating the Chilliwack Huskers 46-7.

The reining BCFC Offensive Player of the Week Nick Downey pick up where he left off last weekend...scoring touchdowns. After three scores last weekend, Downey caught two balls for 110 yards and had a major. Although he has four offensive touchdowns in the last two games, you can never hold down a great returner forever. Downey would run back the only kick-off that came his way on Saturday night 84 yards for a major.

Quarterback Brandon Leyh was nine of 13 for 207 yards and had two touchdowns. Jerod Zaleski caught three passes for 41 yards and Daniel English made three grabs for 38 yards and would score the other TD through the air.

On the ground the Rams would tally 134 yards, highlighted by Clay Ross who rushed 16 times for 101 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Rookie kicker Nick Naylor would hit three field goals from 35, 40 and 43 yards out.

The defence would also get in on the scoring as Nick Felicella returned an interception 13 yards to pay dirt. Charles Scott, Joe Patko and Jeff Paras would also pick off passes in front of Rams faithful. The “D” would also record four sacks by Chris Mulangu, Scott Puffer, Sheldon Vanroon and Ben Olson. Eight Rams would record multi-tackle games.

The Rams have won two in a row and are 2-3, in fourth place in the Conference and will host the 1-4 Broncos following the bye.

The Chilliwack Huskers suffer their fifth consecutive loss to open the season. The offense would compile just 124 yards as quarterback Adann Hendrickson finished 12 of 31 for 111 yards and a touchdown. Adam Leggott caught five passes for 53 yards while Alex Sattar had two catches for 14 yards and had the lone Huskers touchdown. Hendrickson would lead the ground game with 25 yards on five carries.

The Huskers special teams unit did a decent job of giving the offense their chances. Levi Weaver returned seven kick-offs for 160 yards including a 71 yard return. He would also return two missed goals totalling 65 yards. Kicker Jayson Bates had six punts for 123 gross yards.

The defence of the Huskers spent the majority of the game on the field and would force one turnover. Chris Schindel jumped on a fumble after Andy Goyer forced it. Brad Bomberry led the way with four tackles and an assist while Warren Jarak and Travis Mackie would pick up sacks.

The Huskers will travel to the Okanagan following the bye. BCFC Players of the Week – Week Five

The British Columbia Football Conference is pleased to announce the ”Players of the Week” for Week Five of the 2011 Season. For the first time in 2011 one team has swept all three categories...”Rebels Rule.”

Each game, teams in the BCFC like to use the run game to open up the pass game...in Westshore on Saturday afternoon, the Rebels had no reason to use the pass game. The ground assault would compile 423 yards on the day, led by the Offensive Player of the Week, running back Greg Morris. The Toronto product would total 259 yards on 13 carries and score four touchdowns. He would add a reception for nine yards. The 18-year old would score from 100, 63, 32 and 28 yards out leading the Rebels to their third win of the year. His 259 yards set a new Rebels record and is 11th best in BCFC history.

It took until Week 5 of the schedule before the league records its shutout as the Rebels defence blanked the Broncos 47-0. The Rebels “D” was solid, but one player stood out from the others as defensive back Michael Hansen is the Defensive Player of the Week. Hansen compiled three solo tackles and was a ball hawk, intercepting two passes for a total of 14 defensive points. Hansen is the first Rebels defender to win this award in 2011.

For the second time this season Rebel kicker Quinn Van Gylswyck is the BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He would add to the Rebels scoring on Saturday afternoon with 15 points, hitting all three field goals (17, 36 and 40 yards out), was perfect on five converts and had a single. His kicking would pin the Broncos deep all afternoon with four punts totalling 228 yards, an average of 57 yards including a booming 75 yarder. His five kick-offs would total 313 yards, an average of 63 yards.

The BCFC enters the Labour Day bye week with the first half in the books. After the long weekend Week 6 will see all six teams in action with the “Battle on the Island” part two features the 3-2 Rebels in Nanaimo to face the 5-0 Raiders. Also on Saturday the 1-4 Kamloops Broncos travel to Langley to visit the 2-3 Rams. Then on Sunday September 11, the 4-1 Okanagan Sun host the 0-5 Chilliwack Huskers. Follow the BCFC on Facebook.

PFC Week Three in Review By Tom Hallick – PFC Media Coordinator

Saskatoon Hilltops 26 @ Edmonton Huskies 5 @ Clarke Park

The campaign’s third week opened at Clarke Park, where the 0-2 Huskies hosted the 2-0 Hilltops.

The Toppers offense couldn’t score on their first drive of the night, but caught a break as Edmonton’s Kevin Francis muffed a punt inside his 5 yard-line. The Hilltops recovered and would score two plays later as tailback Regan Schuler scooted in from two yards out nearly two-and-a-half minutes into the period.

Huskies punter Jamie McPherson would give up a safety to make it 9-0 Saskatoon. Zack Schmidt would tack on a 24-yard field goal to make it 12-0 after the first 15 minutes.

Kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht put the Huskies on the board on the last play of the half. The three-pointer was set up by a 51-yard pass and run from pivot Ben Gorniak to Eric Schuit.

Both offenses struggled mightily at times on the night as turnovers were the story of the game. The Hilltops would commit 4, but Gorniak and company would give the ball back to Saskatoon an astounding 10 times. Gorniak would toss 3 interceptions as would Saskatoon pivot Chase Bradshaw. The Huskies would fumble the ball away 3 times, in addition to 4 turnovers on downs.

The Huskies would pull to within a touchdown as Schmidt would give up a safety. Zach Schmidt would provide the lone Saskatoon score of the third quarter on the final play as he made a 39-yard placement. The Hilltops offense would get out of its funk in the fourth as Schmidt would get his third three-pointer of the night to give the Toppers a 13-point edge. Rookie Chad Braun would take a Bradshaw pass for a 17-yard score to ice the win. Schmidt would tack on a 71-yard punt single on the game’s last play to close out a 26-5 win.

The 3-0 Hilltops and 0-3 Huskies have byes next week.

Regina Thunder 31 @ Winnipeg Rifles 52 @ Canad Inns Stadium

When the Winnipeg Rifles and Regina Thunder go toe-to-toe, one of the teams involved usually hits the 50-point mark. That fact rang true again on Sunday afternoon, but this time it was the Rifles that hit the half-century mark as Winnipeg scored a 52-31 win in front of 527 witnesses at Canad Inns Stadium.

Both teams put points on the board on their respective first drives. Brad Mikoluff put the home side up by 3 as he opened the scoring with a 16-yard chipshot 2:27 into the game. The Thunder would jump into the lead as quarterback Wyatt Catley found the end zone on a 1-yard sneak. The Koot convert made it 7-3 nearly 9 minutes in. The home side quickly regained the upper hand at 11:06 when quarterback Ryan Marsch connected with Matt Lariviere for the first of his two majors to make it 10-7 after one frame.

After Koot made it 10-8 on a 20-yard missed field goal, Marsch & company would boost their lead as Marsch fired a touchdown toss to Derek Dean 9-and-a-half minutes in to make it a 17-8 game. Chad Okumura would pick off a Catley pass and motor 36 yards for a major 58 seconds later to up the advantage to 24-8. Regina would rally as Kolten Solomon tallied a 22-yard major score to make it 24-15 after a fast paced first half. The Thunder would cut the deficit to 2 as Solomon got his second major of the day on a 36-yard pass from Catley.

The home side would go on a 21-0 run as Dean would reel in a 64-yard TD strike; Alex Vitt reeled in an 11-yard six- pointer; and Matt Lariviere hauled in a 42-yard major. The Rifles took a 45-22 lead into the final 15 minutes.

Brad Mikoluff conceded a safety 3 plays after linebacker Steven Hudey halted Catley on a third-down gamble. Receiver Brandon Sieber made it a 45-31 game as he caught a 13-yard pass from Catley 6:06 into the period, but that was as close as the Thunder would get. Catley went 33 of 59 for 466 yards with 3 TD’s and 3 interceptions. Derek Dean would make his third touchdown catch of the day as Marsch would fire a seven-yard strike with 95 seconds left.

Marsch had a career day with 6 touchdown passes as he went 20 of 34 for 425 yards. Matt Lariviere had 7 grabs for 128 yards. Kurt Goodrich had 4 catches on the day for 107 yards. Dean had 3 catches for 76, while Vitt had 5 catches for 99 yards.

Catley would have a great afternoon as well as he completed 33 of 59 passes for 466 yards. For Catley, the 33 completions would tie for 3rd place on the PFC & CJFL single game completion list. The 59 attempts were the 2nd most in conference & CJFL history. For the second straight week, both starting pivots threw for 400+ yards. The first time the feat was ever accomplished was last Sunday as Winnipeg battled Saskatoon.

Kolten Solomon was Catley’s go-to receiver as he had 9 catches for 138 yards. Clay Cooke had 3 receptions for 69 yards.

The offenses combined for over a thousand yards. Regina racking up 520 yards, the Rifles had 498.

Defensively, Chad Okumura had 2 interceptions, upping his season total to 3. He added 3 tackles for 16 defensive points.

The teams would combine for 29 penalties for 300 yards with Regina’s Zach Evans ejected in the second quarter for rough play.

The Rifles head to Edmonton next Sunday to play the 0-3 Wildcats in the lone game of Week 4. The Cats were blanked 30-0 in Calgary on Sunday. Edmonton Wildcats 0 @ Calgary Colts 30 @ McMahon Stadium

The Calgary Colts looked to keep pace with the who picked up their third straight win in Edmonton on Saturday night, while the Wildcats sought their first win after a demoralizing 44-10 loss in Regina.

Colts rookie kicker Marshall Broom, in the lineup for an ailing Andrew Fabian, had the first score of the opening frame on a 44-yard placement. Calgary boosted their lead as Brendon Kearl reeled in a 10-yard throw from pivot Clayton Masikewich, who had a breakout game after a slow start to 2011 for a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Broom would get his second three-pointer from 36 yards out to give the Colts a 13-point edge at the half. After Broom connected on his third field goal of the afternoon, tailback Cuong Thai Lieu would make it a 23-point lead as he dashed 53 yards off tackle 8:40 in to the third quarter. Third-year back Chucks Okafor would wrap up the scoring 4 minutes into the final period as he found the end zone from 9-yards out.

The Wildcats passing attack had its third straight miserable day as the ferocious Calgary defense held Edmonton to all of 96 yards passing. Anthony Johnson completed 12 of 21 passes, but threw a pair of picks. Tailback Taylor Souster ran for 70 yards on 14 gallops.

The Colts have a bye week, while the Wildcats host Winnipeg. The Rifles come into Clarke Park at 2-1 after their three touchdown home field win against Regina.
