Ursuline College 2016 Team Program Get In The Game! Be a Mentor! How would your career or life be diff erent if someone you respected had encouraged you while you were in high school or college? Was there someone who believed in and wanted to support you in the pursuit of your goals? We have chosen a professional mentoring program to help bring about these results. Our purpose: The purpose of mentoring is to provide hands-on experience that benefi ts our students, staff and community by connecting people to each other. Mentoring helps to increase confi dence in approaching the business environ- ment and can serve as an excellent networking tool. Further, it increases one’s awareness of her purpose and re- sponsibility in the community.o communicate in a professional manner and develop professional relationships. - To direct students to important conferences, periodicals and a network of individuals within their future career fi elds. What mentoring is: Most simply, mentoring consists of asking the question “How can I help you?” The mentoring program for our softball student-athletes recommends a phone call or meeting once a month for fi ve to ten months so the protégé can ask ques- tions about her chosen career fi eld. The mentor can also lend advice on current trends in the fi eld and important happen- ings that would be benefi cial to the student. Who should be a mentor? An ideal mentor is someone who is able to commit to the protégé and maintain an honest relationship. He or she should be able to openly communicate with the student-athlete and be committed to being an open and honest teacher to them. It is someone who believes in the protégé’s potential, and will help the protégé both defi ne her dream and construct the plan necessary to turn the dream into reality. Finally, it is someone willing to stay on the agenda of the protégé. Who are the protégés? The protégé is generally a junior or senior at Ursuline College. She is committed to the mentoring program and has a seriousness of purpose in her chosen fi eld as indicated by a minimum GPA of 3.0. In 2015, eight G-MAC institutions will sponsor softball: Alderson Broaddus, Cedarville, Davis & Elkins, Kentucky Wesleyan, Ohio Valley, Salem In- ternational, Trevecca and UC. The conference will expand by one team in 15-16 with Malone University joining and by fi ve teams in 17-18 when Walsh, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican, Findlay and Hillsdale all join the G-MAC.

Ursuline College Facilities Opened in 2002 and located at the south end of campus adjacent to the UC Soccer Field, the Ursuline Softball Field features a tremendous playing surface with bleacher and hillside seating for spectators. The facility features fencing, drainage, bullpens and a batting cage. Hosting 25-30 games a season, the Softball Field is among the newest softball facilities in the conference.

The athletic complex, shared with and soccer, hosts a sports pavilion just beyond center fi eld that features restrooms, a concession stand and athletic storage. Overall, Ursuline College continues to build and improve upon its existing facilities. The Matthew O’Brien Athletic Center was destroyed by a tornado on July 20, 2013. The 1,000-seat gymnasium also fea- tures four indoor batting cages that can be used year-round.

A new weight room is also being constructed and will provide every student-athlete with a full array of exercise equipment to train.

Susan Woodford – the winningest coach in program history - begins her 10ths eason as the Ursuline College head softball coach.

When UC was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), her teams were competitive in the American Mideast Conference and made the play- off s three times, advancing as far as the Regional tournament.

She has the energy and experience to help usher in a new era of Arrow softball as the program transitions to the NCAA Division II level. Woodford has a track record of devel- oping programs, having done so at both the high school and collegiate levels. In addi- tion to working as a teacher, she led the softball program at Atlantic Shores Christian School in from 1993 until 2001 when she left to take over as the head coach at Hiram College.

Her teams play an aggressive style of softball, evidenced by her previous team establishing a new North Coast Ath- letic Conference single season stolen base record. In 2012, her UC club stole 21 more bases than the opposition. Fundamentals are stressed as well: in 2006, her Ursuline team led the nation as the NAIA Daktronics statistical leader in team defense.

With a background in teaching, academics are stressed under Woodford. Her teams have traditionally been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Every single year since 2006, her team has fi nished in the Top 25 nationally in grade point average. Under her watch, Woodford’s teams have continually engaged in community ser- vice to better the surrounding communities.

Woodford – who also coached fi eld hockey at the collegiate level - has been certifi ed as an umpire and offi cial in the Tidewater region of Virginia and also taught pitching and hitting for the “Strike Zone Professional /Softball School” along with former pro players Gary LaVelle and the late Towny Townsend.

She has been an instructor, speaker and coordinator at various camps and clinics throughout the country where she teaches the basics of pitching, hitting and coaching as well as character development and leadership. She is a certifi ed Physical Fitness Specialist and a Team Challenge Training Instructor.

Woodford holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Youngstown State University where she lettered for the Penguins all four seasons while doubling as a two-time team captain of the Penguins fi eld hockey team. She later earned a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Studies from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The head coach resides in Mayfi eld Heights, Ohio and has spent many summers as a camp director.

6 Ursuline College Softball Assistant Coach GRACE MULLER

Head coach Sue Woodford announced the hiring of Grace Muller in January prior to the start of the 2016 season. Last season, Muller was at Cleveland State University where she worked as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. The Vikings went 23-29 and qualifi ed for the Horizion League tournament last season.

At Cleveland State, Muller assisted in coordinating camps off ered by the softball pro- gram as well as individual lessons in the areas of hitting and catching. In June of 2015, she traveled to Austraila representing the USA Athletes International and Cleveland State in the Austrailian International Softball Challenge.

She has also worked with the Queens of Diamonds Softball organization as a coach in their 16U division.

Muller attended Concordia University in Ann Arbor where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Family Life with a concentra- tion in Social Services. She was a four-year member of the softball team and was a three-year team captain. Muller is also a member of Athletes in Action, a Christian organization centered around the relationship between God and sport.

ADVANCED HITTING CLINIC The Advanced Hitting Clinic is a high-powered, unique clinic that helps a player understand through science how a hit- ter can add 50-200 points to their batting average in one year!

G-MAC Honors The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) has recognized two female student-athletes as the ‘Female Scholar-Ath- lete of the Year’ and both times, the winner has come from the UC softball program. It would be amazing if back-to-back winners came from the same school, but the same team? Very, very impressive.

Sam Gauvin won the inaugural award in 2012-13 and Natalie Huggins was the recipient in 2013-14. Both Gauvin and Hug- gins spent four years playing for coach Sue Woodford and excelled on the diamond and in the classroom.

Gauvin graduated with a 3.87 GPA while majoring in psychology. Huggins earned a 3.69 GPA while double majoring in Ado- lescent to Young Adult (AYA) Licensure in Language Arts and AYA Licensure in Mathematics. Each of these degrees required her to also major in the corresponding content area. Therefore, Huggins graduated with four undergraduate degrees. She chose that curriculum so she could be a versatile teacher who could also coach.
