I.-IN'l'RODUC'l'ION. The" Ammonites" proper contained in Mr. H. \V. Blomfield's collection are few in nnmber', and will be noticed in a later part of this Memoir. The following descriptions of the "Crioceri" are offered with a considerable amsmnt of diffidence, and to arrive at these results I found it impemtive to undertake a general review of our Cretaceous forms hitherto associated with the names CTioceras and Ancylocera8; the outcome of this work, extending over many months, is t~ my mind, I regret to say, anything but satisfactory. This arises from two primary causes, the frag­ mentary state in which the fossils are frequently found, and the difficulty experienced in grouping ~uch portions, from many and "widely separated localities, in well dlefined species. A secondary cause is due to the fact that many of the hitherto described forms are based on portions of shells only, and in two instances at least the descriptions are so inadequate that recognition of the species is practically reduced to gue~s work. In no instance is this more apparent than in that of Cl·iocemB australe, Moore, the Australian type of the group. To render my investigations as complete as possible, I assembled all the specimens of the above two genera within my reach, and drew upon the following collections, as well as onr own :-The Mining and Geological, and Macleay Museums, ~ydney; National Museum, Melbourne; Geological Survey, and Queensland Museums, Brisbane; Geological Survey Collection, Adelaide; and the Sweet Collection, Melbourne.

Introduction In December 1890, while on patrol down the west coast of northern Cape York Peninsula (NCYP), accompanied by Senior-Constable Conroy and a few native troopers of the Thursday Island Water Police, Sub-Inspector Charles Savage visited ‘the Seven Rivers’.1 From this place, the party went south to the mouth of the Batavia (now Wenlock) River. There they met the chief or mamoose of the Seven Rivers tribe,2 a man identified as Tongambulo (variations Tong-ham-blow,3 Tongamblow4 and Tong-am-bulo5) and also known as Charlie in one account.6 At the time of this meeting, Sub-Inspector Savage was seeking another candidate for induction into government policies intended ‘to civilize the Natives of Cape York Peninsula’.7 The first NCYP Aboriginal person to have had this experience was Harry, also known as King Yarra-ham-quee, and described as the ‘mamoose of the Jardine River’.8 This man had been taken to Thursday Island earlier in the year: where he underwent a course of instruction and when he had sufficiently understood what was required of him was taken back and made king, his subjects and several visitors, Natives of Prince of Wales Island, being present.9 1 ‘Conciliating the Natives’, Torres Straits Pilot, 6 December 1890, and published in The Queenslander, Saturday 27 December 1890: 1216 [hereafter ‘Conciliating the Natives’ Torres Straits Pilot]. 2 Savage, Charles 1891, Letter to the Honourable John Douglas, Government Resident Thursday Island, dated 11 February 1891, Queensland State Archives, Item D 143032, File - Reserve.

Eleven of these species have established breeding populations and some are locally abundant and highly invasive, such as the tilapiine cichlids (Oreochromis mossambicus and Tilapia mariae) and the poeciliids (Gambusia holbrooki and Poecilia reticulata). Besides the continued introduction of non-native species, of great concern is the further spread of the tilapias, especially Oreochromis mossambicus and its hybrid form, and of another invasive, the three-spot gourami, Trichopterus trichogaster. Initial introductions are most probably releases of unwanted aquarium fish directly into open waters, or indirectly from ornamental ponds by flood waters. While natural dispersal is occurring, most of the range expansion of the tilapiine cichlids, particularly into impoundments in flood- prone areas, has been as a result of human translocation, and possibly the use of live bait by anglers. The tenement is located in 98 sub- blocks 126km SSE of the town of Croydon. The EPM was granted to explore for economic sulphide copper nickel deposits, and possibly economic uranium deposits. Bowen Energy originally applied for 17 Tenements in the Croydon Project area, but has subsequently rationalized these original 17 down to 3 tenements which include EPM 16272, 16274, and 16267. Bowen Energy has also picked up another tenement located on the south-western edge of the 3 remaining tenements which is EPM 17364.
