  • Examining Female Gamers' Perceptions and Attitudes of Behaviors in the Gaming Community
Running head: FEMALE GAMERS AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT 1 Examining Female Gamers’ Perceptions and Attitudes of Behaviors in the Gaming Community Michele Desirée Evanson Marietta College A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Marietta College Psychology Department In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Psychology May 2017 FEMALE GAMERS AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT 2 FEMALE GAMERS AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT 3 Abstract In recent years video games have grown into a mainstream pastime. The internet and use of social media have made it easier for gamers to interact, and have made communications open to the public. Recent public displays of harassment have led to discussions of sexism in gaming culture. Gaming is generally considered a male dominated culture, and previous research on the impact of video games on problematic behavior predominantly focused on males. We now know female gamers are a prominent demographic (ESA, 2015; Stuart, 2014), and since they are often the target of sexual harassment it is important to examine their perspective of these behaviors. This study surveyed female gamers in order to identify their general attitudes towards and perceptions of sexual harassment. Similarly to previous research, attitudes and perceptions of sexual harassment were negatively related; greater tolerance towards sexual harassment led to identifying fewer behaviors as sexual harassment. The hypothesis that participants who predominantly played Mature rated games would lead to more tolerant attitudes of sexual harassment was not upheld. Exploratory analysis found that the role-playing and sports genres were significantly related to general sexual harassment attitudes. Interest in the sports genre was positively related to tolerant attitudes of sexual harassment.

  • Terrain Rendering in Frostbite Using Procedural Shader Splatting
Chapter 5: Terrain Rendering in Frostbite Using Procedural Shader Splatting Chapter 5 Terrain Rendering in Frostbite Using Procedural Shader Splatting Johan Andersson 7 5.1 Introduction Many modern games take place in outdoor environments. While there has been much research into geometrical LOD solutions, the texturing and shading solutions used in real-time applications is usually quite basic and non-flexible, which often result in lack of detail either up close, in a distance, or at high angles. One of the more common approaches for terrain texturing is to combine low-resolution unique color maps (Figure 1) for low-frequency details with multiple tiled detail maps for high-frequency details that are blended in at certain distance to the camera. This gives artists good control over the lower frequencies as they can paint or generate the color maps however they want. For the detail mapping there are multiple methods that can be used. In Battlefield 2, a 256 m2 patch of the terrain could have up to six different tiling detail maps that were blended together using one or two three-component unique detail mask textures (Figure 4) that controlled the visibility of the individual detail maps. Artists would paint or generate the detail masks just as for the color map. Figure 1. • EXTENDED FICTION in GAME DESIGN Austin Anderson (Michael Young) Department of Computer Science
University of Utah UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL UNMASKING THE PLAYER: EXTENDED FICTION IN GAME DESIGN Austin Anderson (Michael Young) Department of Computer Science INTRODUCTION In any story, an element being diegetic means that it is an element of the story that the characters of the fiction can sense. The simplest example is that of music in a movie; if there is a radio playing music in the scene, that music is diegetic. If a musical soundtrack plays over the scene but is something the characters cannot hear, it is non-diegetic(DIEGETIC). The border between the diegetic and non-diegetic is most commonly referred to as “the fourth wall” (Webster), in reference to the imaginary fourth wall of a play set, where the sides and back of the room that events are taking place in are fully represented on the theater stage, but the opening through which the audience observes the events of the play is an imaginary barrier. This barrier isn’t just literally a completion of the four walls in a traditional room of a building, but also metaphorically separates the reality from the fiction, quarantining both from each other as to not interfere. The problem with this boundary is that it can’t fully encompass the medium of video games. Video games, at their very essence, are an interactive medium. They require some breach of the fourth wall for them to function, as the game could not proceed to tell its story without a player’s input, which is an addressing of the audience due to the necessity of their action.
