1. Answer any two of the following questions in about 40-60 words each. 4 (2+2) a) When Raja saw the snake going into the coconut shell, he closed the mouth of the shell with a stone. What possible harm could have been caused to Raja while doing so? b) What does the phrase ‘feet in the earth’ mean in the context of a person who is tall (empowered) like the tall trees? c) At the circus, the tiger had thought that the human beings were strong and fearless but when it entered the market road, how did its impression about the human beings change? d) The author of “The Shoeshine” was an educated person and had come to Delhi to look for a white collar job but ended up taking up the work of a shoeshine. Write two reasons in favour of his decision and two reasons against it. 2. Read any two of the following extracts and answer the questions that follow: 4 (2+2) a) The Athletes had come from all over the country To run for the gold, for the silver and bronze Many weeks and months of training All coming down to these games. (i) How many countries did the athletes come from? (ii) Were the contestants well prepared for the event? Pick up the line that illustrates this. b) What is noise? Any unpleasant sound is noise. It’s something we don’t like. It’s something that makes us cover our ears. The wail of a fire engine, a clap of thunder, the screech of a car’s tyres when the brakes are put on suddenly. How much sound is too much? At what level does sound become noise? Well today sound can be measured scientifically. The level of sound is measured in decibels. A decibel meter is used to register sound. Zero decibel is equal to the faintest sound heard by the human ear. A decibel meter in a quiet bedroom may register around 35 decibels. In a classroom during a quiet period it may register around 50 decibels. This level is comfortable on the ears. It is said that most people speak in a range between 45-75 decibels. (i) Give two examples of noise that disturb you, from your own life. (ii) What level of sound is comfortable on the ears? What will happen to your ears if the decibel meter shows 75 decibels?

How will you contribute in its making? b) Kondiba utilized his reward money for setting up a business. Suppose you get a bravery award of Rs. 15000/=. How will you utilize your money? 4. Answer any one of the following questions in about 150-200 words each. (6x1) a) To rescue the Headmaster from the tiger, the teachers of the school set up a ‘Tiger Committee’. Do you think this was the right course of action? What would you have done, if you were the Deputy Headmaster of the school? b) Pandit Nehru says “make friends with the sun and work in the light”. How will you carry this out in your life? Give at least two examples.

We join with the earth and with each other We join together as many and diverse expressions Of one living mystery, for the healing of Earth and the renewal of all life. (i) How can we recreate the human community? (ii) What does the poet mean by the phrase “many and diverse expressions of one loving mystery”? b) Recycling rubbish not only helps save money - it also helps the environment. We lessen the pollution that is created by burning rubbish and we save valuable resources. Western countries waste a great deal of the earth’s resources. For example, in the USA about 75,000 trees are felled every week just for printing the Sunday edition of New York Times. Recycling used paper would easily save these trees. Many countries encourage recycling and new technology allows more waste to be reused. Most of the world’s rubbish can be reused – paper, metals, glass and even some plastics. i) How can we save trees from cutting? ii) How is the reusing of waste beneficial?

As a result of Dr. Kurien’s relentless efforts, the poor milk producers were protected from being exploited. The farmers came to appreciate the spirit of cooperation in addition to acquiring marketing skills. He introduced various reforms in the administration of Amul Dairy. He proposed to distribute half of its profits to the milk producers as dividend. Dr. Kurien’s reforms improved the rural economy considerably. This proves the saying, “The woman who owns a buffalo celebrates Diwali every day”. Dr. Kurien made India the largest milk producer of the world. Dr.Kurien established the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and designed the “ Programme”. Dr. Kurien may rightly be called the “Architect of Modern Dairy Industry” and “Father of the White Revolution”. He has been honoured with very high civilian awards such as Padmashri and Padmabhushan. His achievements were recognized internationally and he was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magasaysay Award for community leadership. (i) Why is Dr. Kurien called the “Father of the White Revolution”? Marks: 20 Note: (i) Make any one project out the list of five projects given below: (ii) Write your name, enrolment number, AI name and subject etc. on the top of the first page of the answer sheet. a) Speak with your mother and write down a list of things found at home that she uses to cure simple ailments. For example, she might use ginger for stomach upsets. List at least 10 items found at home and make a chart on these with their respective remedies. Then ask 5-6 neighbors as to what home remedies they use for their respective ailments. Write a short report on this. b) You have read lessons like “A Prayer for Healing”, “My Vision for India” etc. These lessons have the central idea of peace and justice. Take up some newspaper research. You can read the newspaper daily and collect the incidents/stories/reports related to injustice/atrocities committed on fellow human beings. Make a scrap book on this. Write a short paragraph on how injustice or atrocities disturb the peace of society. c) Make a project on “Examination Stress”. Interview at least 5-6 students either from Open Schools or Regular Schools. Prepare a short questionnaire. You can cover the following points: - Students’ stress before examination. - What happens when you are under stress (e.g. sweating, legs shaking, no appetite, stomach ache etc.)? - What do you do to handle your stress? - What are the reasons of your stress (e.g. time pressure, parents’ pressure, peer pressure, performance pressure etc.)? - If there was no examination would you study and finish your course? Write a Report based on these interviews. d) “Land Pollution” is the most hitting problem of our world. If this is not controlled then the world would not be worth living. Make a Project on this topic that describes and lists the views of at least 6 (six) persons. Use the following steps. Title: Land Pollution Step I – Prepare a Questionnaire. You can ask questions on environment awareness, types of land pollution, kinds of garbage, sources of garbage, rising population, disposal of garbage etc. Step II – Interview at least 6 persons in your locality. Record their responses on separate Questionnaire.

English 9 Step III – Write a report based on the information from the interviews. Add your own views too on this topic. e) You have read “Nine Gold Medals” and “Kondiba” in your English book. In view of this, write a Case study* of a physically-challenged person. You can prepare a short Questionnaire on the following points: • What are the disadvantages for him/her? • What kind of family support he/she has? • What is his/her daily routine? • How he/she manages day to day activities? • What he/she thinks about his/her own self? Write a Report based on your observation and interaction with that physically-challenged person. * A Case Study is an intensive analysis of an individual/unit.
