Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Invites Guests Into an Immersive Adventure of Galactic Proportions Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Invites Guests into an Immersive Adventure of Galactic Proportions A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … It is a dark time for the RESISTANCE. Following the devastating Battle of Crait, the freedom fighters have fled with General Leia Organa to an undisclosed location. Meanwhile, hunted by the FIRST ORDER and Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, a band of Resistance supporters has established a temporary outpost on the remote planet of Batuu, thanks to scouting by Resistance spy Vi Moradi. Here on the Outer Rim, the Resistance is rebuilding and searching for recruits to join the cause and help save the galaxy from tyranny … Opening Dec. 5, 2019, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Jan. 17, 2020, at Disneyland Park in California, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance sets a new standard for what a Disney theme park experience can be, as guests become heroes of the Resistance in a climactic battle with the First Order. In one of the most immersive, ambitious and technologically advanced attractions ever created for a Disney park, guests launch into space aboard a transport shuttle, only to be captured by a Star Destroyer and pursued by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren as they frantically search for a way to escape the clutches of the First Order. This new attraction inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge draws guests into a sprawling Star Wars narrative that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, as jaw-dropping sights brimming with vivid detail create surprises around every turn. In one of the longest Disney attraction experiences ever, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance delivers thrilling action driven by cutting-edge technology and innovative design that gives guests the feeling of stepping inside a Star Wars film. Join the Resistance Guests exploring Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge find the Resistance’s temporary encampment in the forested area along the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost on Batuu. The gateway to the encampment is marked by a large turret. From there, a pathway leads deeper into the forest toward towering cliffs and the crumbling remains of an ancient civilization. Guests weave through low stone walls, timeworn pillars and tight corridors as they progress farther into the base, hearing military communications chatter along the way. In a makeshift briefing room, Rey – a hero of the cause – appears via holo-transmission alongside dutiful droid BB-8 to welcome the new Resistance recruits. She shares a plan to reunite with General Leia Organa at an off-planet location that must be kept secret from the First Order. Guests then board a nearby Intersystem Transport Ship (I-TS) and have to make their rendezvous quickly to avoid a First Order Star Destroyer on its way to Batuu. They should have a bad feeling about this … An All-Encompassing Attraction Experience Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance throws out the rulebook for traditional attraction design, eschewing and/or blending industry notions such as “queue,” “preshow” and “ride” to create a seamless, holistic experience full of rich details and breathtaking excitement on a cinematic scale. When guests board the I-TS, they’ll feel as if they’re lifting off the surface of Batuu and blasting into space alongside Poe Dameron in his signature black-painted X-wing starfighter, Black One. Before the I-TS can make the jump to lightspeed, it’s caught in the tractor beam of a Star Destroyer and pulled into a massive hangar bay. Guests make their escape from the Star Destroyer aboard eight-passenger First Order Fleet Transports piloted by reprogrammed R5-series astromech droids. The attraction features grand set pieces – including the hangar bay that is filled with 50 menacing stormtroopers and a docked TIE fighter. At various points, guests dodge blaster bolts from stormtroopers and AT-AT walkers, scurry past huge turbolaser cannons, and stumble into the Star Destroyer’s bridge. Throughout their journey, guests are hunted by Kylo Ren, who uses the Force in an attempt to pry from their minds the location of General Organa’s secret base. Guests feel Ren’s tremendous malevolent power as they narrowly avoid his attacks. Authentically Star Wars Actors from the current Star Wars film trilogy reprise their roles for new scenes and dialogue in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, including Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) and Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux). Many scenes were filmed at the same time “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” were in production. Poe Dameron’s X-wing is one of several vehicles from the Star Wars galaxy appearing in the attraction. Disney cast members adopt personalities of First Order and Resistance troops throughout the attraction to further deepen the immersive experience for guests. Walt Disney Imagineering worked hand in hand with Lucasfilm in writing the attraction’s script, ensuring characters and storylines were properly integrated into the broader Star Wars The attraction introduces a new featured character: Lieutenant Bek is a Mon Calamari Resistance officer who helps guide the Resistance recruits through their harrowing journey. Cutting-Edge Technology Powers Immersive Storytelling Walt Disney Imagineering combined multiple ride systems to tell the story of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. In one sequence, a new simulator experience gives the sensation of falling from space to crash land on Batuu. The trackless ride vehicles in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance are some of the most advanced ever used in a Disney attraction, with a sleek, low profile and the ability to move in all directions. Disney A-1000 Audio-Animatronicsfigures appearing in the attraction provide a deep level of immersive storytelling through their lifelike and dynamic movements. To fully realize this Star Wars story, Imagineers created thousands of special effects, from slashing lightsabers and whizzing blaster bolts to exploding walls and massive star fields – just to name a few. ### Media Contacts: Walt Disney World Resort Public Relations 407-566-6397 [email protected] WDWNews.com DisneyParksBlog.com.

  • “Carrie Fisher Sent Me”
Unbound: A Journal of Digital Scholarship Realizing Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Star Wars, Episodes VII, VIII & IX Issue 1, No. 1, Fall 2019 “CARRIE FISHER SENT ME” Princess Leia as an avatar of resistance in the Women’s March Christina M. Knopf Keywords: Star Wars, Resistance, Women’s March A January 2017 article from the Independent led with the words, “Across the world, Carrie Fisher's rebel princess turned general become [sic] a source of hope and inspiration for women everywhere” (Loughrey 2017, para. 1). The article was loaded with images from Twitter of protest signs bearing Carrie Fisher’s visage with her iconic hair rolls superimposed with such slogans as “Woman’s Place is in the Resistance,” “We are the Resistance,” and “Rebel Scum.” Signs found in Twitter posts, news articles, and published archives revealed numerous Star Wars-inspired messages of feminist rebellion and resistance. Some featured Princess Leia as Rosie the Riveter, the emblem of the Resistance fighters tattooed on her arm or taking the place of Rosie’s employment badge on her collar. Signs recreated the Star Wars’ ITC Serif Gothic Heavy font to proclaim that “The Women Strike Back,” “The Fempire Strikes Back,” “The Estrogen Empire Strikes Back,” and “The Female Force Awakens,” others presented the Resistance insignia and/or Princess Leia’s face stating “Resistance is Built on Hope.” Some protestors dressed in a full Princess Leia costumes from A New Hope, promising to defeat the Dark Side. Some marchers paraphrased Leia’s iconic plea to Obi Wan, and declared, “We are Our Only Hope.” A sign paraphrasing Yoda argued that “Fear leads to anger.

  • Rebellion, Republic, and Resistance: Exploring the Politics of Disney's Star Wars Films
Rebellion, Republic, and Resistance: Exploring the Politics of Disney’s Star Wars Films By Alex Baughman Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Departmental Honors In the Department of Political Science Hood College April 2019 1 Abstract Star Wars is arguably one of the most significant cultural franchises in the United States of the past 40 years. George Lucas’ original trilogy has spawned an abundance of media, the most prominent of which is the film saga. A wealth of research and literature has been conducted and written on the original and prequel trilogies, but a relative paucity of scholarly discourse exists since Disney acquired the property in 2012. This study seeks to fill a portion of that gap in literature. I begin by reviewing the literature on film’s capacity to influence viewers’ political attitudes, and why fictional films are able to do so via the theoretical Extended Elaboration Likelihood Model. Next, I discuss the various political commentary and scholarship on the original and prequel trilogies, and build a case inquiry into the sequel trilogy as a Disney property. Through focus groups, I explore the political messages received from the Disney Star Wars films as represented by Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and contrast them with those of the early Star Wars films as represented by Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope (1977). I find evidence that viewers of the original trilogy are exposed to libertarian ideological messages and viewers of the sequel trilogy are exposed to progressive ideological messages. While the qualitative results offer no generalizable conclusions, the implications and themes of this study certainly warrant further research.

Unbound: A Journal of Digital Scholarship Realizing Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Star Wars, Episodes VII, VIII & IX Issue 1, No. 1, Fall 2019 USING THE FORCE OF REPRESENTATION The New Hope Against the Rise of White Nationalism Casey Walker Abstract: Christine Cornea’s article “From Isolationism to Globalism: An Overview of Politics and Ethics in the Hollywood Science Fiction Film” discusses the discourse on nationalism, isolationism, and the fear of globalization in Hollywood’s science fiction films beginning in the 1930s. Cornea concludes these films have an “overwhelming concern with the defence [sic] of the nation throughout this period” and notes “the frequent narrative emphasis on confrontation (whether competitive, threatening, or violent) across circumscribed borderlines.” These filmic manifestations of normative anxiety concerning migration and the immigrant "Other" create a space in which nativism and annihilation of immigrants are celebrated. However, in the most recent installments of the Star Wars franchise, Episodes VII & VIII, the films advocate a more global, borderless society where humans and aliens coexist in a united front of resistance against the Empire. The racial diversity of the human characters further accentuates this conscious effort on the part of the studio and filmmakers to make inclusion and diversity the heart of the resistance against an Empire, which itself is emblematic of the mostly white, mostly male hierarchy of nativism and exclusion. This paper will use previous literature (such as the article mentioned above) to launch a discussion of the ways in which the latest installments in the Star Wars canon subvert the tradition of nationalist and nativist tendencies in science fiction films, creating a diverse resistance, while also serving as fertile ground for a response to the rise of nationalism (specifically white nationalism) in our nation today.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS MOCK TRIAL PEOPLE v. REY The Court: Rey has been charged in an information with one count of attempt murder of Kylo Ren in violation of Penal Code sections 664/187. To this charge and allegation, Rey has pled not guilty and the jury will be deciding whether she is guilty or not guilty. The people of D’Qar have the burden of proving their case beyond a reasonable doubt, which means that each member of the jury needs to be convinced of their decision and be comfortable with it -- not only today, but even if we came back and asked you about it years from today. We call this in the law “an abiding conviction.” Do the People wish to give an opening statement? Prosecutor: We do, Your Honor. The Court: You may proceed. Prosecutor: Members of the jury -- The facts will show that this is a simple case of Rey picking up a deadly and dangerous weapon, a lightsaber, and attempting to kill Kylo Ren. The evidence will show that she overpowers him and seriously injured him. She would have killed him if not for Kylo Ren’s daring escape at the last minute. We will call Kylo Ren and an eyewitness, General Hux, who will tell you about this horrible violent act by an out of control girl. You will find at the end of this trial that Rey is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. The Court: Does the Defense wish to present an opening statement at this time? Defense Lawyer: Absolutely, Your Honor.

  • From Sidious to Nixon: the Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam
From Sidious to Nixon: The Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Liberal Arts By Brennan Simpson March, 2021 © 2021 Brennan Simpson 1 In the case of a film franchise that features twelve movies, five television series, and various other forms of media by the time this paper was written, many people may be surprised to hear that Star Wars was actually inspired by one of the most questionable moments in American history. However, the time period in which Star Wars creator George Lucas first wrote what became this world’s ‘‘first step into a larger world’’ actually greatly reflected what ended up on the big screen. Even though the Star Wars movies take place ‘‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….,’’ it has been publicly stated in interviews that Lucas based both Star Wars media on the Vietnam War and their main villain, Darth Sidious, on former U.S. President Richard Nixon. Though there have been a few scholarly works since the first Star Wars movie was released in theaters in 1977 that have attempted to explore these parallels, none of them has directly explored how Lucas’s long-standing views on the Vietnam War affected certain key moments of the first six Star Wars movies. This thesis explores George Lucas’ antiwar activism before creating Star Wars to demonstrate how remarkably similar the films and related media of this franchise truly are to both various aspects of the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon’s rise to power.
