Mature-age WAFL aces eye AFL chance

JACKSON RAMSAY (East Perth) Age 24 ~ WAFL games 14 ~ From Coolbinia. The experience of AFL isn’t foreign to Jackson Ramsay. He played 17 matches for Collingwood between 2013-2017. His return to the WAFL last season lasted only a few minutes before he ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament. But Ramsay has shown persistence because he has bounced back to be one of the most damaging midfielders in the WAFL. Ramsay earned selection in the WA State team in May and has averaged almost 30 possessions per match to prove he deserves a second opportunity at the highest level. AJANG AJANG (East Perth) Age 22 ~ WAFL games 22 ~ From Ellenbrook. He is still learning his craft but Ajang Ajang’s springed heels have enabled him to be a key force for East Perth in the second half of the season. Ajang is reminiscent of a young in that he can not only leap high enough to dominate ruck contests but also quickly follow up his own play to get a second clearance for the Royals. While he might be a work in progress his natural talent makes the 198cm, 96kg giant a gamble worth taking for an AFL club. CODY LEGGETT (Perth) Age 23 ~ WAFL games 64 ~ From Attadale. Over the past few seasons Cody Leggett has been considered an AFL chance. His ability to kick the ball long distances has certainly proved an advantage to Perth under the new 6-6-6 formation rules in which clubs are striving to get the ball to uncongested forward lines as quickly as possible. After five seasons in the Demons league team he is now a smarter player and his ability to continually get 20-plus disposals show he can find the ball at the right times. HAIDEN SCHLOITHE (South Fremantle) Age 26 ~ WAFL games 142 ~ From Katanning. AFL clubs have continued to overlook Haiden Schloithe. But he keeps making a mockery of the stance by remaining a force in the competition with South Fremantle. Not only is Schloithe a dangerous proposition in midfield but he can be just as dangerous when having a breather in attack with his ability to pop up and kick key goals. At 26 there is no doubt timing is running out for the Bulldog. But it must be remembered that his former South Fremantle teammate Marlion Pickett was selected as a 27-year-old by Richmond earlier this year.

During 2019, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

It’s appropriate the best collectables of the year should hit the market as the WAFL season heads towards its zenith. And while we would all love to see our club win a premiership in September, most serious collectors would gladly forego a flag to get hold of the rarest WAFL cards known to exist. Which is what one lucky collector got this week, when he paid more than a week’s salary for seven WAFL cards from 1923, six of which had never been seen by collectors.
