General Characteristics of the District Narayanpur district is one of the two new districts created on May 11, 2007. It was carved out from the erstwhile Bastar district. This district occupies an area of 6640 km². Narayanpur town is the administrative headquarters of this district. 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. Narayanpur district is surrounded by Bijapur and Dantewada district in south, Bastar district in East, Kanker district in North and Maharashtra state in west. 1.2 Topography Narayanpur district lies in the Bastar Plateau, and consists of some rocky and some plain regions. 1.3 Availability of Minerals. Water quality is also assessed once in a year. The generated data from these observation wells are compiled, analysed and presented in the form of reports from time to time and circulated to various Central and State Government Departments. The present report embodies data and information collected during monitoring in the year 2017-18. The report has been compiled and prepared by Smt. Prachi Gupta, Scientist ‘B’ under the supervision of Shri M M Sonkusare, Scientist ‘D’ under the guidance of Shri A. K Biswal, Head of the Office. Girl members of the Ghotul are called as ‘Motiaris’ with a leader ‘Belosa’ and boy members are called ‘Cheliks’ with a leader ‘Siredar’. One interesting fact lies the development concerning the women folk. Beside participating actively in decision-making policies, women are assigned with the administrative task at the Ghotul. Water quality is also assessed once in a year. The generated data from these observation wells are compiled, analysed and presented in the form of reports from time to time and circulated to various Central and State Government Departments. The present report embodies data and information collected during monitoring in the year 2019-20. The report has been compiled and prepared by Smt. Prachi Gupta, Scientist ‘B’ (Jr. Hg.) and Sh Uddeshya Kumar, Scientist ‘B’ (Jr. Hg.) under the guidance and supervision of Sh. A. K. Biswal, Scientist-D & Head of the Office.     Program Monitoring Report of Chattisgarh District Narayanpur First Quarter 2013-14 (April – June 2013) By National Health Systems Resource Center Executive Summary The report is based on monitoring visit to Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh in June 2013. A) Introduction: The first quarter (2013-14) visit in Chhattisgarh covered Narayanpur district. Narayanpur is one of the least developed district of India and of Chattisgarh. The district borders Chattisgarh and Maharashtra. In the past, Narayanpur was part of the larger Bastar district of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh and later Chattisgarh. Almost 5 / 6 th of the district is the Abujhmarh, which is an extremely densely forested, hilly area. It remain the only unsurveyed area of India. Currently, Abujhmarh is the stronghold of the Left Wing Extremist groups. Narayanpur is tribal dominated, with Gond, Madia and Bada Madia being the scheduled and primitive tribe. Abujhmarh is almost a sanctuary of the Madia tribe without any access to roads, schools and health services. Parts of Abujhmarh are accessible by roads, but invariably after a certain point roads disappear. The only way of commuting is on foot, or vehicle like Tractor. It is crucial to note that Narayanpur being one of the most heavily affected districts due to LWE. Health, ICDS and school education are probably the only 3 programs signifying the existence of Government in the district, especially, in the affected area (which is the majority of the district). B) Analysis of overall indicators of Narayanpur: 1) Availability of data: Lack of reliable data in general, and especially from the Abujhmarh part of the district is a key problem.

The problem of Naxalism in India is not a new phenomenon. The problem started from a remote village name Naxalbari located in the district of Darjeeling in West Bengal. Since then, it spread into less developed areas of India, such as Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and so on. The movement had evidently socio-economic roots such as uneven distribution of land as well as exploitation of the rural poor and socially deprived by revenue collectors and landlords. The movement seeks to organize revolution on the pattern of Maoist revolution of China through armed and violent struggle and bring about an end to highhandedness of the upper classes.1 India has over the last many decades been facing a tough challenge of naxalism that are prevalent in several parts of our country.2 The issue related to Naxalism is a cause of serious concerns with naxal violence being reported on regular intervals in several parts of our country.
