PSP Permanent Sample Plot SW South West Region UNEP United Nation Environmental program WCMC World Conservation Monitoring Centre WHINCONET Western Highlands Nature Conservation Network ii ABSTRACT In 2007 the European Union suspended imports of Prunus africana, an Afromontane, CITES listed tree who‟s medicinal bark has been used for the last 40 years as the main ingredient in drugs for prostrate problems in Europe. CIFOR has been supporting the Government of Cameroon in developing a National Management Plan for Prunus africana. Despite years of research across Africa, critical data was lacking on tree recovery after harvesting and the most sustainable rotation period for repeated harvests, with no studies have previously been carried out on bark recovery rates of this multi-use tree. CIFOR, with the University of Dschang, carried out a study from April to August 2009 with the aim of evaluating how to sustainably harvest Prunus africana (Hook F.) Kalkman in the three major harvesting regions of Cameroon. An assessment of the recovery rate of bark growth post-exploitation was conducted to evaluate the potential bark yield after exploitation. 710 trees in 14 sites including privately owned, permanent forest domain and community forests were analysed. Seedling regeneration in exploited zones and tree status and health in plantations located at different altitudes were also assessed. The research results indicate that more than 60% of harvested Prunus africana trees were over-exploited (according to the current harvest good practice guidelines) and 9.2 % were harvested according to sustainable norms. Bark recovery rates were found to be significantly affected by the agro-ecological origin of the trees. (Ad=.12±.05; NW=.1±.03; SW=.06±.02cm/yr), indicating that the humid highlands in Adamaoua and the NW are the optimal zone for the species. Bark recovery rates reached 15% of original bark thickness during the first and second years after exploitation, but progressively dropped to an inflection point (7%) between the seventh and

The world over an appreciable population derives its sustenance directly from mountain resources and this makes for about one-tenth of the world’s poorest.The Western highlands of Cameroon are an archetypical territory of a high population density and an economically very active population. The highlands are characterised by an ecological fragility and a multi-faceted socio-economic dynamism at varied levels of poverty, malnutrition and under employment, yet about 80 percent of the Santa highlands’ population depends on its natural resource base of vast fertile land, fresh water and montane refuge forest for their livelihood. Allen Foundation and WCS SUMMARY The Bouba N’djida - Sena Oura - Benoue - Faro Landscape is located in north Cameroon and extends into southwest Chad. It consists of Bouba N’djida, Sena Oura, Benoue and Faro National Parks, in addition to 25 safari hunting zones. Along with Zakouma NP in Chad and Waza NP in the Far North of Cameroon, the landscape represents one of the most important areas for savanna elephant conservation remaining in Central Africa. Aerial wildlife surveys in the landscape were first undertaken in 1977 by Van Lavieren and Esser (1979) focusing only on Bouba N’djida NP. They documented a population of 232 elephants in the park. After a long period with no systematic aerial surveys across the area, Omondi et al (2008) produced a minimum count of 525 elephants for the entire landscape. This included 450 that were counted in Bouba N’djida NP and its adjacent safari hunting zones. The survey also documented a high richness and abundance of other large mammals in the Bouba N’djida NP area, and to the southeast of Faro NP. In the period since 2010, a number of large-scale elephant poaching incidents have taken place in Bouba N’djida NP.

    CAMEROON Perspectives on food security October 2020 to May 2021 Food security improved in the Far North, but worsened in the Northwest and Southwest KEY MESSAGES • Despite the recent surge in attacks by Boko Haram, and Current food security situation, October 2020 excessive rainfall leading to flooding in some locations in the Far North, ongoing new harvests have improved food security for many poor households that currently subsist on their own harvests. The harvest of rainfed grains from the primary agricultural campaign in 2020 is estimated to be average, due to favorable weather conditions. Slightly lower than average production is expected in the Logone-et-Chari, Mayo Sava, and Mayo Tsanga departments, where Boko Haram is most active, as well as in locations where harvests were lost to flooding. • Current prices at the primary markets in the Far North appear stable or are decreasing. Taraba State, Nigeria *[email protected] Abstract: Local farmers’ techniques and knowledge in rice cultivation being deficient and the aid system and research to support such farmers’ activities likewise insufficient, technological progress and increase in rice production are not yet assured. Therefore, this Study was undertaken to assess cost efficiency among small scale rice farmers in the West Region of Cameroon using stochastic frontier model approach. A purposive, multistage and stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents. A total of 192 small scale rice farmers were purposively selected from four (4) out of eight divisions. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interview schedule, administered on the respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stochastic frontier cost functions. The result indicates that the coefficient of cost of labour was found positive and significantly influence cost of production in small scale rice production at 1 percent level of probability, implying that increases in cost of labour by one unit will also increase cost of production in small scale rice farming by the value of it coefficient.

Federal College of Education (Technical), Potiskum, Yobe State, Nigeria ABSTRACT A study of Evaluating the constraints and opportunities of Maize production in the West Region of Cameroon was carried out using primary and secondary data collected. One hundred and twenty (120) maize farmers randomly selected from eight (8) villages were interviewed using structured questionnaire. Data from the study were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentages, and inferential statistics such as multiple linear regressions. The study found that most maize farmers in the study area were small scale farmers and are full time farmers, the major maize production constraints was poor access to credit facilities. it was also found any unit increase in the quantity of any of the resources used for maize production will increase maize output by the value of their estimated coefficients respectively , however to raise maize production, the study recommend that financial institutions such as agricultural and community banks should be established in the study area with the simple procedure of securing loans. The relevant government agencies and non- governmental organization should mobilize the maize farmers to form themselves into formidable group so that they can derive maximum benefit of collective union.
