Dear People of Saint Joseph Parish, The Church traditionally celebrates May as the month dedicated to Mary. Some parishioners remember Marian devotions celebrated in church with song and prayer and want the same kind of celebration today. The liturgical reforms of Vatican II do not allow the same kind of devotions to be celebrated today. The 1930 to 1965 format for devotional liturgy usually took the form of Eucharistic adoration with popular devotional prayers added. For example, the Marian devotions usually began with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It was followed with popular devotional prayers like the Liturgy to the Blessed Virgin Mary and other popular devotional prayers. It concluded with the blessing and more devotional hymns. Liturgists pointed out that it was not consistent to begin with the Blessed Sacrament and then pray to the Blessed Mother while the Blessed Sacrament is before us. It is consistent to pray to the Blessed Sacrament while the monstrance holds the Body of Christ before us. Parishes did not schedule the devotions because when the format changed, parishioners did not attend. The devotions did not enjoy the popularity they once had. Pastors did not schedule public prayer for empty churches. The intent did not just evaporate. Many Catholics find a source of grace in the devotional prayers that used to be in the liturgies, they were just no longer in the church buildings under a Eucharistic format. I thought it was a very healthy move. It allows me to pray without the regimented format. I exercise my Eucharistic spirituality when I celebrate mass and I can devote prayer to our Blessed Mother when I pray the rosary or the litany. Catholics under fifty years of age do not have the benefit of celebrating devotional prayer. Many cannot pray the rosary because they have never done so or do not do it frequently and lose the knowledge to practice it. Many do not reach out for devotional prayers for a number of reasons. May is still the Church’s month to celebrate Mary. There are many prayers that direct the heart to her virtues and her love of God. The Hail Mary is a good start. The rosary is the Church’s prayer that recalls Mary’s role in God’s plan for salvation. Saints have composed other Marian prayers that are popular and beg Mary’s assistance to lead us to the goodness of her Son. One example is the prayer entitled Hail Holy Queen that can be found on the back of the Breaking Bread book. Mary’s prayer of the Magnificat, My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, from the Gospel according to Luke 1:46 55 is another great Marian prayer. Marian devotion is still popular among many Catholics. It is an untapped source of deep spirituality for many in the younger set. I invite all our parishioners to explore it during May. She is the wife of Saint Joseph, our patron! Sincerely, Fr. Paul Bomba Stewardship!!! Food Pantry Reminder. ..
