ANNUAL REPORT 2015 OUR MISSION: OUR VISION: To provide a comfortable and supportive home America’s first healthcare hospitality house, away from home for patients and their families setting the standard for compassionate guest care. Member of the Healthcare Hospitality Network 2015 BOARD Dear Friends of Kevin Guest House: OF DIRECTORS As I reflect on the past year and the work we have accomplished together, I am humbled by the Executive Board generosity of our donors, volunteers and friends in the community. Together we opened the doors to Kevin Durawa Kevin Guest House, providing an environment of comfort and dignity to patients and families in need President of lodging. Michael Vaughan Matthew Whitehead In order to provide for our long-term future, in April 2015 the Board of Directors approved the Geanne M. Zanatta purchase and renovation of 766 Ellicott Street. This 1888 brick Victorian home is situated immediately to the south of the Main House and will allow us to overcome critical challenges facing our campus: KEVIN GUEST - Make the KGH campus handicap accessible for the first time in our history with the HOUSE STAFF installation of an elevator on the rear of the new property. - Keep larger families together, introducing four family suites with four to five bed spaces each, Lynsey Zimdahl Weaver and private bathrooms. Executive Director - Meet the growing demand for our lodging by doubling the number of guests that we can host each year; and meet the demand for transplant patients needing a safe place to recover with the Pamela Chrzanowski introduction of two additional recovery apartments. Claudia and Cyril Garvey of Sharon, PA came to Roswell Park Cancer Institute to help Kevin battle leukemia. While the Garveys had the financial means to stay in a hotel, they witnessed families sleeping in their cars or hospital waiting rooms. Shortly before Kevin’s death in January 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Garvey purchased the property located at 782 Ellicott Street, saving the home from impending demolition. With the support of volunteers and donations from the community they renovated the house and welcomed their first guest on July 26, 1972. Having traveled to Western New York in the summer of 2015 to work on a jobsite, Curtis found himself riddled with headaches Curtis Johnson that simply wouldn’t go away. He checked into Orleans Community Health Hospital in Medina where scans found a tumor on his brain. Curtis was transferred to Buffalo General Medical Center where he underwent multiple brain surgeries. His mother drove to Buffalo from her home in Alabama so she could stay by his side. It was a tearful but exciting day for her when Curtis came out of his first major surgery! Curtis would spend nearly a month on-and-off at Kevin Guest House recovering from additional surgeries. He would be discharged but would be required to stay nearby to continue follow-up care. His girlfriend Karen would stay with him and help with recovery. Today Curtis is feeling well and his scans giving him positive news.
