Campus improvements Denisha Bonds include the award-winning renovation of three historic buildings and the 2008 completion of a new “green” residence hall, increasing on-campus housing capacity by Member - at - Large: more than 25% and establishing the campus commitment to environmental April Heiselt sustainability for the 21st century. Executive Director: Continued on page 2, Tatum Joe Buck Continued from page 1, Tatum In addition to being an accomplished administrator, Dr. Tatum is widely recognized as a scholar, teacher, race relations expert and leader in higher education. The recipient of numerous honorary degrees, in 2005 Dr. Tatum was awarded the prestigious Brock International Prize in Education for her innovative leadership in the field. Her best-selling titles include Can We Talk About Race? And Other Conversations in an Era of School Resegregation (2007) and Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race (1997). She is also the author of Assimilation Blues: Black Families in a White Community (1987).

Actively involved in the community, Dr. Tatum is a member of several boards including the Executive Committee of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Woodruff Arts Center, the Community Foundation of Atlanta, and recently co-chaired the Early Education Commission of the United Way. Dr. Tatum is also a member of several national non-profit boards including the Institute for International Education, the Council of Independent Colleges, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and Teach for America. Appointed by President Obama, she is a member of the Advisory Board for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She also serves on the Georgia Power corporate board of directors.

Dr. Tatum earned a B.A. degree in psychology from , and M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from University of Michigan. She also holds a M.A. in Religious Studies from Hartford Seminary. She has served as a faculty member at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Westfield State College, and , where she also served as dean and acting president.

A.Paul Pyrz, Jr.

Paul Pyrz serves as the President of LeaderShape, Inc., a not-for-profit organiza- tion located in Champaign, Illinois. LeaderShape has been providing ethics-based leadership programs for men and women across the country for the past twenty years. Prior to joining LeaderShape in August of 2000, he spent 11 years working in Student Affairs, primarily in residential life, at Arizona State University, the University of California at Davis, the University of Miami (FL), and the University of Illinois. In between, Paul also worked with Franklin Covey, a personal productivity company known for their time management tools. He received both his bachelors and masters degree from Arizona State University in Business Admin- istration and Human Resource Development, respectively; and is currently completing his doctorate in Educational Organization and Leadership at the University of Illinois. His mission is to help others live and lead with integrity. Paul is married to Patty and they have a son, Caleb, who is five, and a one-year old daughter, Casey.

P A G E 2 Case Study Participants & Judges Wanted!

As we prepare for the upcoming SACSA conference, the New Professionals’ Committee would like to invite graduate students to participate in the annual case study competition. We are also seeking judges for the competition. Below is some important information regarding the competition.

When The case study competition will take place on Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 9 am – 5 pm. All participants of the case study competition should attend a short meeting after the conference orien- tation meeting on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm to review information. Please refer to your conference program for room information.

Registration Registration can be completed as you register for the conference via your conference registration from. No worries if you do not have a case study competition partner; we can randomly assign you!

Participants Participants are graduate students currently attending a SACSA member school. Competition teams will consist of two students per team.

Judges Each team will be judged by a three judge panel. We are seeking new professionals, mid- managers and SSAOs to lend their expertise and talent as judges for the 2011 case study competition. Judges can either serve a half day or a full day; the choice is up to you! Contact Janice Hicks at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Please include your name, job title, institution, and time available to judge on Sunday, November 6th.

Competition Each team will have a pre-scheduled 15-minute time slot. Teams may arrive up to one (1) hour pri- or to their scheduled time to receive the case study. They will then have one hour to prepare their presentation. At their scheduled time each team will be allotted fifteen minutes to present their case and answer questions from the judges.

Winners Awards and cash prizes will be given to the winners at the awards banquet on Monday, November 7, 2011. Non Conference Programming

Do you ever get to the point where you wish you were maximizing the strengths you have in order to have the best outcome possible? Well, this years SACSA’s Non Conference Programming Committee presents to you: I have taken the Strengths Assessment-Now What? Strategies to empower students and student affairs professionals through strengths-based approaches- presented by Dr. Joelle Carter from George Washington University. 1. Participants will learn more about strengths and be able to identify and explain their own personal strengths 2. Participants will be able to consider a current project they are working on and integrate a strengths-based approach 3. Participants will be able to identify two ways that they can further develop themselves or their staff members through strengths development.

THE SACSA FOUNDATION HAS A FACEBOOK PRESENCE!

The SACSA Foundation has been working diligently over the summer to identify and implement strategies to increase its capacity to support the membership through professional development opportunities. This year, the Board of Directors unveiled its “Cultivate a Life of Stewardship” campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to increase members’ awareness about the importance and power of financially contributing to organizations such as the Foundation as well as identifying ways to increase professional development through existing programs such as the Dissertation of the Year Award and the Research Grant and for new programs such as conference travel support grants for graduate students and new professionals. None of these new ideas can be achieved without the support from our membership!

In an effort to raise this awareness, the Foundation now has a Facebook (FB) presence. Please log on to your FB account and request access to the page today. In addition to our “revived” SACSA webpage, we hope to use FB as a medium to acknowledge members’ contributions to the Foundation and increase giving before the 2011 Annual Conference.

One of our first initiatives will be our “Countdown to the Conference Challenge”. Each week, I will post a notice that indicates the remaining weeks until the Annual Conference and challenge SACSA members to donate that particular amount or more (e.g. 17 weeks=$17, 15 weeks=$15, etc.) in an effort to encourage each SACSA conference participant to make a contribution PRIOR to annual meeting. It is our hope that will raise and sustain the momentum of contributions that we realize during the conference each year. So don’t wait another second! Log onto Facebook and join the SACSA Foundation group today. Not only will you receive up to date information about the Foundation’s activities but you can witness how and why SACSA members believe in advancing the Foundation’s efforts through their personal resources and time. This is our year of “Members Helping Members” through SACSA.

The Foundation Board of Directors is working hard to implement innovative strategies to keep you informed and involved. In particular, I would like to thank Mr. Ken Posner who facilitated our web- site changes as well as initiated our Facebook presence. I would also like to thank Ms. Tanisha Jenkins who has been taking an active role in contacting our SACSA colleagues and friends to en- courage them to contribute to the Foundation prior to the conference as well. We appreciate all the work and energy each of you have contributed to the Foundation thus far. Please continue to support us as we seek to “Cultivate a Life of Stewardship”!

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 SACSA Awards and Recognition process! All nomina- tions should be submitted electronically through the SACSA website by August 5, 2011. Once the call for nominations has closed, award nominees will be contacted by the Chairperson of the Awards and Recogni- tion Committee and asked to submit their resume, chronology of SACSA involvement, a letter of recommen- dation from the colleague(s) of their choice and a high-quality photograph by no later than September 2, 2011. We are excited to announce the addition of the Outstanding Graduate Student Award to recognize and honor the accomplishments of SACSA’s active graduate students.

The Melvene Draheim Hardee Award The Melvene Draheim Hardee Award recognizes contributions to student personnel work by a member of the Association. Recognition will be for achievement in one or more of the following areas: Development of a model program or concept that impacts student personnel work in the Southeast. Significant research and/or publication. Providing outstanding leadership in professional organizations and/or endeavors. Any unique and outstanding contribution to student personnel work that calls for acceptance and acknowledgement throughout the profession.

The Howard Davis Sr. Award The Howard Davis Sr. Award recognizes outstanding service rendered to SACSA by a member of the Association. Recognition will be for achievements in one or more of the following areas: Performance of duty above the expected. Completion of a service to the Association that reflected faithful and competent achievement. Development of new programs or concepts with a positive impact upon the Association.

The Bobby E. Leach Award The Bobby E. Leach Award recognizes a student affairs professional or graduate student who has contributed significantly to the development of multicultural relations on a college or university campus. Criteria are as follows: Currently active in SACSA (one year minimum membership). Must have been significantly involved at least two years in efforts, which have contributed to improvement of multicultural relations on his/her campus.

The New Professional Award The New Professional Award recognizes a new professional who has provided exemplary service to SACSA. Criteria are as follows: No more than five years of full-time experience in student affairs. Current membership for at least one full year and active involvement in SACSA. Demonstrated service to the profession (e.g., presented a paper, workshop, conducted research, demonstrated leadership) and promise shown for becoming a leader in the field. Attended at least 2 SACSA affiliated professional development conferences, workshops, or activities. Possess outstanding character and potential role model stature for other new professionals.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award – BRAND NEW AWARD The Outstanding Graduate Student Award recognizes a graduate student for their academic achievement, campus involvement and potential for significant contributions to the Student Affairs profession. Criteria are as follows: Enrolled as a full-time student pursuing masters or doctoral work in a Student Affairs-related degree program, with intention of pursuing a career within Student Affairs. Current membership for at least one full year and active involvement in SACSA. Demonstrated academic achievement. Active involvement and leadership roles in campus activities and organizations. Possess a paraprofessional or intern-related position within the Student Affairs Division.

The Joe Buck Service Award The Joe Buck Service Award recognizes the long-term membership and service of Dr. Joseph A. Buck, Vice President for Student Affairs Emeritus at Armstrong Atlantic State University, to the Southern Association for College Student Af- fairs. Dr. Buck currently serves as SACSA's inaugural Executive Director, a position for which he has volunteered since 2001. Prior to this role, Dr. Joe Buck has served SACSA with distinction since 1973. His accomplishments include: SACSA Scholar, 2003, 2002 Local Arrangements Chair, 2000, 1990, 1980 SACSA Foundation participant. H. Lifetime Honorary Memberships Lifetime Honorary Memberships shall be presented to long-term members of SACSA who have made notable contributions to SACSA and the College Student Affairs Profession. Criteria are as follows:

Should no longer be eligible for regular membership. Should have been a regular member for at least seven years. Should have been actively involved in SACSA by serving in some leadership capacity, either as a committee chair and/or participating in at least one of the SACSA-sponsored professional development activities (i.e., the annual conference, Mid-Managers’ Institute or New Professionals’ Institute) as a coordinator or presenter.
