OUR EXAM RESULTS ARE OUR BEST EVER!

Mr Renwick writes...

I am delighted that your child is considering joining William Brookes School and as Head I am proud to welcome you to our vibrant and successful school. We are the only Coubertin school in Great Britain and value highly our Olympian traditions. Academic standards are high and frequently among the highest in the county. 2015 - 16 was a fantastic year for us. GCSE results gained by our KS4 students in the summer are the best ever in the history of the school with 73% of students achieving 5 A*-C grades, including English and Maths. To do this at a time of immense change, a drive for increased standards and a reduction in national statistics only exemplifies the achievements of the school. Our A level results were also excellent with us almost achieving the high benchmarks of 2015. Lots of our Year 13 students gained their first choice university places and we have maintained Oxbridge entry record for the fifth year running. We even had an A level candidate in Year 11 gain an A* for his Maths paper! Most importantly, 82% of students gained 5+A*-C - a key threshold for many post - 16 courses. These successes come from great relationships between parents, students and staff which provide the positive ethos that drives the ambition and confidence for us all to be the best we can be. The school underwent a complete rebuild in 2010 making it the only school in to have a building fully equipped for 21st century learning, although we continually look to improve our excellent facilities and resources for learning. We also have a large Leisure Centre, swimming pool and 3G pitch, which are jointly managed and available for use by students and staff during the day. We have a specialism in the Performing Arts and have excellent facilities inside the Edge Arts Centre for public and school performances. These include a Dance and Drama studio, a Lecture Theatre and Cinema alongside the main Performance studio. Our role as a school is to develop well rounded individuals who are good citizens with the skills and qualifications to tackle the ever changing world we now live in. Presentation Evening 2016

Our annual Presentation Evening took place on Thursday 15 September, and this year’s awards were handed to students by Mrs Annie Smith, a respected member of staff involved in many sporting activities both at William Brookes School and with our Partner Primary Schools. Each year we take photos of the award winners and this year we were able to pay homage to the magnificent achievements of Team GB in Rio and to remember our own heritage as the UK’s only Coubertin School. We were proud to have three students nominated to carry the torch during the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and it seemed only fitting that we marked this year’s achievements holding the torch once again. The evening celebrated the achievements of our students over the previous academic year and successes at AS, A2 and GCSE. The announcements of rewards were interspersed with drama, music and dance performances, enjoyed by a packed house of proud parents, staff, governors and friends of the school. We wish our former students well and thank them for their contributions to the school; congratulations to them all for their hard work and effort. We are most grateful to everyone who has generously contributed towards the sponsorship of the Awards. SCIENCE SECTION - a report from Ms Lacey On 22 September, a lovely sunny autumn day, Year 13 biologists, accompanied by Ms Lacey and Mrs Bennett, set off to investigate the different communities around a lake. Working at Crosemere Lake near Ellesmere, with a tutor from the Field Studies Council at Preston Montford, the students put their knowledge of succession to the test, collecting data about types of species and their abundance and the environmental factors that influence this distribution. The tutor was impressed with the knowledge of the students and the great teamwork shown. Loads of data was collected and is being analysed by the students and the ideas applied to other examples of succession. Page 6 William Brookes School Newsletter Medical Care in School

Please note that parents are requested not to send their child into school if s/he shows any signs of being ill. If a student feels unwell during the day and is unable to carry on with normal lessons, s/he reports to Reception, having first obtained authorisation from the teacher. If the problem is minor, our First Aiders will deal with it and the student may be cared for on a short term basis in the sick bay. We do not have the facilities to provide extended supervision for sick students and, when necessary, we will contact parents to ask them to come and collect their child. If it is necessary to take or send a student home, this is only done if we are sure that an adult is available to care for them. Staff are not permitted to issue medicines of any kind to students. In those few cases where medication is ordered by a doctor the school is always willing to assist but only on receipt of a written request from parents on Form M1, which is available from Reception. Analgesics (pain relievers) can only be issued if provided by the parent and the above Form M1 has been completed. If your child is asthmatic (M2) or has an allergy (M4) for which medication is required we do have facilities in school to hold spare inhalers or antihistamines. The relevant form will need to be completed, available as above. Following an accident or unforeseen illness, it may be necessary for a student to receive hospital attention. Again, we will contact parents. It is therefore imperative that the School Registrar has complete and up to date contact details at all times. Parents are asked to sign a medical consent form when their child joins the school. Medical appointments should NOT be made during the school day. However, if it is necessary for a student to leave school for an appointment (e.g. dentist) during the day, we ask parents to send a letter or complete a slip in the back of the student planner for counter signature by the appropriate house leader. Students sign out at Reception with this and report back there on their return. We anticipate that, under normal circumstances, students will not need to be out of school for a whole day for such appointments. If you have any questions or would like to talk through your child’s medical requirements, please contact the Reception team.
