National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India In Collaboration with International Justice Mission “Challenges faced by Students and Educational Institutions during Pandemic – Responses and Way Forward” on Wednesday, 23rdSeptember 2020 from 12.00 Noon to 2.00pm Concept Note: Challenges faced by students & educational institutions during Pandemic- Responses and way forward Disaster, a serious disruption occurring over a short span or extended period of time that causes extensive loss in people, material possessions, economy and or environment which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources or strength. Disaster Management Teams over the years with their perfect mitigation strategies, plans and collaborative work with the locals had effectively tackled issues and situations, ensuring to bring back the normalcy with greater restoration. India has the largest population in the world with approximately 500 million people in the age bracket of 5-24 years present a large opportunity in the education space. India is the only country which has over 250 million school going students. There were a lot of initiatives taken by the Ministry of Education to ensure education for the children of school going age. The State Governments have also introduced special initiatives to ensure education to all like Mid-day meal scheme, free laptops, cycles, play way mode teaching, open schooling and etc., In spite of these initiatives there are challenges in achieving education to all due to various socio-economic factors. The Millennium Development Goals focus on various fields of improvement in nations and India is a signatory to the Millennium Declaration adopted at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2000 and has consistently reaffirmed its commitment towards the eight development goals. India is committed to ensure the quality education to all its student population which is one of the goals. When everything was going fine, the unexpected disaster caused by the Pandemic had left and leaving marks among the student’s community. Mode of learning being made online, many students struggle to afford to have online classes as many doesn’t have equipped gadgets, enough money to pay for internet, payment of fees and feasibility. Many families with one gadget were forced to prioritize son’s education against daughter’s education leaving bias. In Parallel, the educational institutions also face tremendous challenge in taking education online. The mental health of the staff and students remain a question mark and there were instances of suicidal deaths and attempts among students. As a response to the need that is visible in the society, this webinar will focus on Responses and ay forward on the challenges faced by students and educational institutions during Pandemic. Eminent speakers with wealth of knowledge and experience at educational institutions and field will be speaking on the topic and be giving practical, workable solutions for the participants.
