Minnesota State Tabbed Preseason Coaches Favorite

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - The Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks were selected by the league coaches as the overall and south division preseason favorite in the NSIC in 2013. The Maver- icks received 13 first place votes and amassed 223 points, 16 more than Minnesota Duluth (207), who garnered two other first place votes and was the coaches’ top choice in the north division. NSIC North Offensive Preseason Player of the Year #16 Phillip Klaphake (QB, 6-1, 185, Sr., Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) St. Cloud State University

Phillip Klaphake has been selected by the league coaches for the second year in a row as the NSIC North Offensive Preseason Player of the Year. A three-year starter for the Huskies, Klaphake is 24-10 in his 34 starts. He was elected a team captain for the third straight year and is a three-time All-NSIC North Division selection. He was the 2012 NSIC North Preseason Player of the Year and in 2010 was the NSIC Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He has thrown for over 2,000 yards in each of his three seasons. He is the first Husky quarterback to pass for over 7,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a career. Klaphake has amassed 7,713 career passing yards and 1,816 career rushing yards. He ranks second on the all-time career passing chart and is 12th on the career rushing chart. He finished the 2012 season with 2,760 passing yards, completing 178 attempts and connecting for 28 touchdowns. He rushed for 607 yards and nine touchdowns. Klaphake was named All-NSIC North First Team and the NSIC Player of the Week on Oct. 1. He was an academic All-NSIC team member and was listed as one of 24 Harlon Hill Candidates. He also earned Don Hansen Super Region 3 and All-America team honors.

NSIC North Defensive Preseason Players of the Year #28 Jack Moro (DB, 5-10, 187, Sr., Brookfield, Wis. / Central HS) St. Cloud State University

Defensively, the Huskies will be led by five-time All-American Jack Moro. A 2012 All-NSIC defensive back, Moro led NCAA Division II in interceptions with a school record 11 picks. He had four multiple interception games in 2012 including two games with three interceptions against conference opponents Wayne State and U-Mary. Twice during the season he was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week. Moro is a two-year Husky starter and has played in every game over the last three seasons. He has 14 career interceptions, five shy of the school record of 19. During the 2012 season, Moro recorded 49 tackles, three tackles for loss, 11 interceptions, six pass break ups, one touchdown, and one blocked kick.

NSIC SOUTH Offensive Preseason Player of the Year #2 Carrington Hanna (WR, 6-2, 222, Sr., Streetboro, Ohio / California - Penn HS) University of Sioux Falls

Hanna had a breakout season in first year as full-time starter at wide receiver for the Cougars, accumu- lated 69 catches for 898 and 10 touchdowns. He led the NSIC in receptions per game (6.27) and ranked second in receiving TDs (10). His 81.5 yards per game was the league’s fifth-best which help him earn NSIC South Division All-Conference Second Team honors. He was named a CoSIDA Academic All- American and All-District with his 3.42 GPA. Hanna led USF with 40 receptions that resulted in a first down and was credited with 12 plays over 25 yards. He eclipsed 100 yards receiving twice and pulled in a career-long 61-yard score in a win over MSU-Moorhead (9/8), in which he also tossed a 39-yard touchdown pass. Hanna caught a game-deciding 9-yard TD at Augustana (10/20) and racked up 919 all-purpose yards including 111 passing yards.

NSIC SOUTH Defensive Preseason Player of the Year #90 Zach Moore (DE, 6-6, 285, Sr., , Ill. / Simeon HS) Concordia University, St. Paul

Zach Moore enters the year ranked as the #2 defensive lineman in the country and a Preseason All- America First Team selection by D2football.com and Beyond Sports Network. Last year, Moore finished fifth in the country with 14.0 sacks and 11th with 21.0 tackles for loss, finishing as the league champion in both areas as he became an All-America First Team selection by numerous outlets including the AFCA. A junior captain, Moore enters his senior year just 4.0 sacks shy of the school record of 30.0 for a career and has reached double-digit sacks in each of his last two years on the gridiron.

Augustana #20 Dajon Newell (RB, 5-10, 185, Jr., Lakeville, Minn./North HS) Newell started all 11 games for Augustana in 2012 and earned All-NSIC South Division Second Team honors after rushing for a career-high 1,090 yards. In 2012, Newell became just the fourth player in school history to rush for 1,000 or more yards in a season after averaging 6.2 yards per carry and 99.1 yards per game. Newell set a career-high in 2012 with 11 touchdowns and rushed for 100 or more yards in a game six times. Four of Newell’s 11 touchdowns last season came on plays of 25-plus yards, including his season-long 47-yard rushing touchdown at SMSU on Nov. 10. Newell ranked second on the team with 1,111 all-purpose yards (101.0 per game) and ranked third in the NSIC in rushing.

#21 Thomas Vanasek (DB, 6-1, 200, Sr., Lakeville, Minn./North HS/Winona State) Vanasek was named to the All-NSIC South Division Second Team Defense in 2012 after starting all 11 games at strong safety. Vanasek finished second on the team with 85 tackles, including a career-high 43 solo stops. He shared the team lead with 6.5 tackles for loss and recorded two sacks. Vanasek shared the team-lead with three interceptions while break- ing up five passes and recovering three . He had three games with 10 or more tackles and recorded a career-high 13 against Winona State on Nov. 3. BEmidji State #4 Avery Walker (RB, 5-10, 194, Sr., Milwaukee, Wis. / Mesabi Range CC) Walker played in eight games in his first season with the green and white and finished fourth on the team in rushing with 272 yards on 49 attempts. He averaged 34.0 yards per game and 5.6 yards per carry while totaling three rushing touchdowns to tie for second at BSU. He returned one kick for 15 yards to compile 287 all-purpose yards (eighth on the team) and added a tackle on special teams. He rushed a season-high 13 times for 61 yards and a touchdown against Minot State (Nov. 10) and totaled a season-high 66 yards on six carries against Minnesota Crookston (Sept. 29), which included a season-long run of 26 yards. Walker recorded 55 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns against MSU Moorhead (Nov. 3) and compiled 55 yards on the ground on 11 carries at St. Cloud State (Oct. 27).

#95 Matthew Shaver (DL, 6-1, 304, Sr., St. Cloud, Minn. / Apollo HS) Shaver was a Beyond Sports College Network 2012 Division II Preseason All-America Honorable Mention and 2012 USA NCAA Division II Preseason Central Region All-Star Team. Shaver started the first four games at defensive tackle before suffering an injury that kept him off the field until the final two games of the season. He totaled nine tackles (two solo) and added 2.0 tackles for loss (-3 yards), which included a half sack (-1 yard). He also recorded three tackles (one solo), one of which was for loss (-1 yard), against Wayne State (Sept. 15). He totaled three tackles in his return from injury against MSU Moorhead (Nov. 3) and his lone tackle in the season opener against Upper Iowa (Aug. 31) was first collegiate sack (-1 yard). Concordia-St. Paul #2 Tre Spears (RB, 5-11, 230, Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park HS) Tre Spears emerged as a breakout every down running back last year as a sophomore in his first year as a starter. He averaged over 80 rushing yards per game and was the nation’s 60th leading rusher. He finished the year as the league’s fourth leading rusher and third among the NSIC South Division running backs. He averaged 5.1 per carry and scored four touchdowns. He had three 100-plus rushing efforts including career- high 187 yards and a touchdown in a win at UM Crookston. He notched his first two-touchdown game at SMSU, rushing for 114 yards on 16 attempts. He topped 90 yards two more times and had at least 50 all-purpose yards in nine games.

University of Mary #4 Craig Bagnell (QB, 5-10, 185, Sr., Polson, Mont. / Polson HS) Bagnell is a dynamic quarterback who is enters his fourth season as a starter for the Marauders. The senior signal caller threw 22 touchdowns and completed 59 per cent of his passes for 2,101 yards with 13 interceptions as a junior, averaging 262.6 yards per game through the air despite missing three games to injury. He was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 407 yards and four scores in a 31-25 win over Augustana. As a sophomore in 2011 Bagnell was named to the All-NSIC North Divi- sion second team after completing 66.7 per cent of his passes for 2,407 yards, 19 touchdowns and just five interceptions. In his career the Polson, Mont., native has thrown for 6,401 yards, 52 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in 27 games. Bagnell has the opportunity to set school career records for yardage and touchdowns this season.

#9 John Oyloe (DE, 6-6, 260, Sr., Williston, N.D. / Williston HS) Oyloe dominated the line of scrimmage last season on his way to earning first team All-Northern Sun North Division rec- ognition and a spot on the Don Hansen All-Super Region 3 third team. Second in the NSIC in sacks with ten, the senior from Williston, ND, also recorded 13.5 tackles for loss to rank 10th in the league. His 69 tackles, including 33 solo stops, was second among defensive linemen in the conference. A two-time member of the NSIC All-Academic team and a second team all-conference selection as a sophomore in 2011, Oyloe is second all-time in U-Mary school history with 31 career tackles for loss. He ranks sixth in career sacks with 19. Minnesota Crookston #27 Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 225, Sr., Lodi, Wis. / Lodi HS) McBride appeared in 10 games, starting six as a redshirt junior for the Golden Eagles. He played mostly as a fullback last season, blocking for NSIC All-Conference running back Richard Haley, but will come into the season as UMC’s feature running back in 2013, a position he held prior to battling injuries over the last two seasons. McBride was primarily used in a receiving role last season, catching 23 passes for 245 yards in 2012. His best game came in UMC’s season-ending win against U-Mary as he had a career-high nine catches for 130 yards versus the Marauders. McBride has rushed for over 1,700 yards in his career with nearly 700 yards as a sophomore and nearly 1,000 yards in his freshman campaign. McBride was also stellar in the classroom last season, he was an NSIC Fall All-Academic selection.

#8 Rickey Jacobs (LB, 6-2, 255, Sr., Junction City, Kan, / Independence CC) Jacobs had an immediate impact for the Golden Eagle defense in his first season in the Maroon and Gold after transfer- ring from Independence C.C. Jacobs was third on the team with 55 tackles during his junior campaign helping lead to an All-NSIC North Honorable Mention selection. He started all 11 games at linebacker. In addition, Jacobs picked up 4.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He was second on the team in interceptions with three on the season. Jacobs also had one pass break-up and two forced fumbles on the year. Minnesota Duluth #77 Tom Olson (OL, 6-6, 295, Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn. / Totino Grace HS) Olson, who along with Colby Ring and two other players will share UMD team captaincy duties this fall, possesses the most starting experience of any 2013 Bulldog, having made 41 straight starts at right tackle since the 2010 opener. An All-NSIC North Division honorable mention selection as both a sophomore and junior, he one of three individuals UMD returns up front offensively from its 2012 start- ing cast.

#31 Colby Ring (LB, 6-2, 220, Sr, Brainerd, MInn. / Brainerd HS) Ring, a third-year starter at inside linebacker, paced the 2012 Bulldogs in tackles for the second straight season with 79 stops en route to receiving All-NSIC North Division first team status. As a junior, he became just the seventh Bulldog to reach the triple-digit tackle plateau, racking up 101 tackles.

Minnesota State #52 Andrew Essman (OL, 6-2, 305, Sr., Lincoln, Neb. / Southwest HS) Essman started all 14 games last seasons and has started in 36 of MSU’s last 37 games. In 2012, he was a member of a Maverick offensive line that saw their backs rush 668 times for 3,300 yards (4.9 ypc; 235.7 ypg) and 38 touchdowns and protected their quarterbacks who have completed 166-of-291 passes for 2,370 yards and 19 touchdowns, averaging 169.3 yards per game. The 3,330 yards of rush- ing, 668 carries, and 38 rushing touchdowns are all the second-highest marks on the school’s single-season charts, while the 2,370 yards of passing was the tenth-best tally in school history. Essman was a First-Team All-NSIC South Division selection and an Academic All-NSIC honoree. Additionally, he was a Daktronics Super Region #3 First Team pick and a Don Hansen All-American Second Team Offense selection.

#93 Chris Schaudt (DE, 6-4, 270, Sr., Slater, Iowa / Ballard HS) Schaudt started all 14 games last season and finished the season with 50 tackles, including 17.5 for a loss and 11.5 sacks. He also had four recoveries, three forced fumbles, three pass break-ups and an interception. Against St. Cloud State (9/15), Schaudt finished with six tackles, including two sacks, two pass break-ups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, earning him the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors. He is one of seven Mavericks with 100 career tackles. He had a season-high 2.5 tackles for a loss against MSU Moorhead (9/22) and against the Sioux Falls (11/3) he tallied a season-high three sacks. In addition to being a First-Team All-NSIC South Division pick, Schaudt was a Capital One Academic All-District selection. He was also named to the Academic All-NSIC squad and was a Daktronics Super Region #3 Second Team pick. He finished the season tied for second on the school’s single-season list in tackles for loss (17.5), third in sacks (11.5), tied for third in fumbles recovered (4), sixth in yards from sacks (61) and tied for seventh in yards from tackles for loss (74). Schaudt enters his senior season atop the school’s career list in tackles for loss (147.5), sacks (27), second in yards from TFL (229), yards from sacks (173), fumbles forced (7), quarterback hurries (8) and tied for tenth in fumbles recovered (5). MSU MOORHEAD #8 Adam Jiskra (WR, 6-2, 180, So., Grafton, N.D./Grafton HS) Jiskra led the Dragons in several receiving categories in 2012, including receptions (41), receiving yards (617), receiving touchdowns (six) and receiving yards per game (56.1). Jiskra also had a long reception of 59 yards during the season. He had season bests of seven catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns against Upper Iowa (9/15/12).

#9 Chris Binford (CB, 5-7, 165, So., Artesia, Calif./Valley Christian) Binford emerged as a solid corner for the Dragons in 2012, starting all 11 games. He finished sixth on the team in tackles with 47 and also had five pass break ups. He had five tackles for loss as well. He was second on the team with 32 solo tackles. He also made his presence known as a kick returner, averaging 26.9 yards on 17 returns.

Minot StATE #23 Wayne Peters (WR, 5-9, 180, Sr., Carson, Calif. / Carson HS / Pasadena City College) Peters was instant offense for Minot State University in his first season for the Beavers in 2012. He finished third on the team with 39 receptions for 531 yards and finished with four touchdown catches. He averaged 59 yards per game and a solid 13.62 yards per catch. He finished with a season-high 107 yards on six catches in MISU’s third game of the season against Sioux Falls. Peters also returned 17 punts on the season and finished with 168 yards.

#21 Jeff Buchert (DB, 6-1, 215, Sr., Plainfield, Conn. / Plainfield HS / Rochester CC) Buchert is one of five returning Minot State University defensive players to finish with 50 or more tackles, ending the 2012 season with 23 solo and 29 assisted tackles for a total of 52. He led the Beavers with three interceptions. He was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week following an 11-tackle, two-interception game against rival University of Mary, the Beavers first win as a member of the Northern Sun. He also finished with seven tackles for a loss.

Northern StATE #6 Jared Jacobson (QB, 5-11, 210, Jr., Rapid City, S.D. / St. Thomas More HS) Jacobson played in all 11 games in 2012 for the Wolves while passing for 2,562 yards (232.9 YPG), good enough for sixth in the NSIC. He passed for 19 touchdowns and led NSU in rushing with 628 yards and 9 rushing scores. He recorded a career-high 422 passing yards in the Wolves’ 65-17 win over U-Mary and was named Honorable Mention All-NSIC North Division in 2012. He was also named Northern State Qdoba athlete of the Week on Oct. 30.

#34 Logan Dosch (DB, 6-1, 210, Sr., Aberdeen, S.D. / Roncalli HS) Dosch was a First Team All-NSIC North Division selection after leading the Wolves and being fifth in the league with four interceptions last year. He ranked in the top-20 in the conference with 83 total tackles and was tied for ninth in the NSIC with 52 solo stops. He had four games in 2012 of 10 or more tackles in a game and recorded a career-best 14 tackles against Minnesota Duluth in the season finale. #26 John Tidwell (CB, 6-0, 191, So., Aurora, Colo. / Rangeview) Tidwell started all 11 games on the corner and proved to be effective cover and run stopper He also excelled as a re- turn man as he averaged 32 yards per punt return and 60 each kick return, including a 69-yard kickoff return vs. MSU Moorhead (9/8). Tedwell ranked seventh in the NSIC with 13 passes defended and 20th out of all DB in tackles (62). He was second on the squad with three interceptions led USF with 10 stops, nine solo, at Winona State (10/5). He was cred- ited with four tackles and career-high two interceptions against Concordia-St. Paul (10/13). He also recorded eight tackles and two pass breakups, while racking up 153 all-purpose yards which included a game-changing 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a season-ending win vs. Wayne State (11/10). Tidwell finished his red-shirt freshman season with 351 all-purpose yards.

Southwest Minnesota StATE #60 Brandon Puffer (C, 6-1, 305, Sr., Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo HS) Puffer begins his third season as a starter on the Mustang offensive line. Puffer, who was named second team All-NSIC South last season and was an honorable mention All-NSIC South selection in 2011, anchors a line that returns all five starters. A season ago, the offensive line helped SMSU rush for 1,888 yards – the second highest total in school history – and also set a school record for average yards per rush with 4.9.

#3 Tate Bunkers (S, 6-0, 200, Sr., Dell Rapids, S.D. / Dell Rapids HS) Bunkers started 10 games last season and was named honorable mention All-NSIC South. He finished third on the team with 70 tackles, while racking up 5.5 tackles for loss. He also ranked second on the team with 45 solo tackles and has two pass break-ups.

CLoud StATE #16 Phillip Klaphake (QB, 6-1, 190, Sr., Princeton, Minn. / Princeton HS) Klaphake, three-year starter for the Huskies, is 24-10 in his 34 starts. He was elected a team captain for the third straight year and is a three-time All-NSIC North Division selection. He was the 2012 NSIC North Preseason Player of the Year and in 2010 was the NSIC Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He has thrown for over 2,000 yards in each of his three seasons. He is the first Husky quarterback to pass for over 7,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a career. Klaphake has amassed 7,713 career passing yards and 1,816 career rushing yards. He ranks second on the all-time career passing chart and is 12th on the career rushing chart. He finished the 2012 season with 2,760 passing yards, completing 178 attempts and connecting for 28 touchdowns. He rushed for 607 yards and nine touchdowns. Klaphake was named All-NSIC North First Team and the NSIC Player of the Week on Oct. 1. He was an academic All-NSIC team member and was listed as one of 24 Harlon Hill Candidates. He also earned Don Hansen Super Region 3 and All-America team honors.

#28 Jack Moro (DB, 5-10, 187, Sr., Brookfield, Wis. / Central HS) Defensively, the Huskies will be led by five-time All-American Jack Moro. A 2012 All-NSIC defensive back, Moro led NCAA Division II in interceptions with a school record 11 picks. He had four multiple interception games in 2012 including two games with three interceptions against conference opponents Wayne State and U-Mary. Twice during the season he was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week. Moro is a two-year Husky starter and has played in every game over the last three seasons. He has 14 career interceptions, five shy of the school record of 19. During the 2012 season, Moro recorded 49 tackles, three tackles for loss, 11 interceptions, six pass break ups, one touchdown, and one blocked kick. Upper Iowa #3 Keaton Hosch (WR, 5-11, 188, Jr., Independence, Iowa / Independence HS) Hosch broke two Upper Iowa records and tied another last season en route to an All-NSIC South Divi- sion First Team selection. The Independence, Iowa native was named to the NSIC South Division’s top team in two positions; wide receiver and return specialist. Hosch’s 1,094 yards receiving in 2012 set a new single-season record and surpassed Dwayne Croker’s (1,023 yards) mark in 2006. The Peacock wideout ac- counted for the yards on 60 catches averaging 18.2 yards per catch and 99.5 yards per game, which ranked 14th in the nation and first in the NSIC. His 12 touchdowns last season tied him for 10th in the NSIC in scoring and seventh on the all-time list at Upper Iowa and included 10 receptions, a punt return and a kick return for scores. Hosch also topped the NSIC in all-purpose yards with 185.8 yards per game; he accumulated 2,044 yards and averaged 18.1 yards per touch. Thanks to Hosch’s efforts, the Peacocks ranked third nationally in punt returns with a 20.1 yard average; Hosch recorded a 23.4 yard average on his 11 punt returns, but did not meet the minimums to qualify for the national rankings.

#37 Ethan Douglas (LB, 6-3, 235, Sr., Brodhead, Wis. / Brodhead/Juda HS) Douglas returned to the All-NSIC South Division Team earning Second Team honors in 2012 after an honorable mention selection his freshman season (2010). The incoming senior led the Peacock defense with 107 tackles in 2012 despite missing the final game and a half due to an injury. Douglas made 62 solo stops while picking up 3.5 tackles for loss. The Brodhead, Wis. native averaged 10.7 tackles per game, which ranks 16th nationally and second in the conference. In three seasons, Douglas has picked up 277 tackles including 151 solo tackles and 21 for loss. Wayne State #1 Charlie Davidson (RB, 6-1, 215, Sr., Wheaton, Ill. / College of DuPage) Davidson was named the NSIC Offensive Newcomer of the Year last season after rushing for 870 yards on 178 carries with seven touchdowns after becoming the Wildcats’ primary back the second half of the season. His 79.1 yards per game ranked sixth in the NSIC thanks to three straight 100-yard games late in the season. He had 149 yards on just 15 carries vs. Concordia-St. Paul, 146 yards and two touchdowns vs. Minnesota State and a season-high 150 yards on 36 carries and one score at Upper Iowa. Davidson finished the season with four 100-yard games after opening the season with 127 yards on the ground at MSU Moorhead

#34 Austan Pomajzl (FS, 6-1, 200, Sr., Grand Island, Neb. / Northwest HS) Pomajzl led Wayne State in tackles last season with 96 to rank eighth in the conference in tackles per game (8.9). He had three games with 10 or more tackles, highlighted by a career-high 16 stops with two tackles for loss at Bemidji State. Pomajzl also recorded a team-high four interceptions for 32 return yards and was an NSIC South Division Second Team selection for the Wildcats.

Teigland piloted an offense that set a new NSIC record for total offense during the season, amassing 480 yards per game. Teigland threw for 2,942 yards as a junior in 2012, tossing 24 touchdowns while completing 61 percent of his pass attempts. His yardage total was the third-most for a Warrior quarterback in a season while his completion percent- age is second on the school charts. .

#51 Kyle English (DL, 6-2, 255, Jr., Niles, Ill. / Notre Dame HS) English returns to the Warrior defensive line after missing the 2012 season with an injury. The defensive tackle will help solidify a lineup that allowed just over 350 yards per game a season ago. English has two years of experience on the Warrior line, collecting 57 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his career. He has also recovered two fumble.
