2011 Us Open National Playoffs Update 2011 US OPEN NATIONAL PLAYOFFS UPDATE LAST WEEK’S RECAP: Former Top 40 Doubles Player David Martin Captures Singles, Mixed Doubles Titles in Final US Open National Playoffs Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Georgia 2008 NCAA Singles Champion Amanda McDowell Wins Women’s Singles The 16 US Open National Playoffs Sectional Qualifying Tournaments concluded with the USTA Southern Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Alpharetta, Ga. Current doubles world No. 112 David Martin captured both the men’s singles title and the mixed doubles title. Martin, 30, of Tulsa, Okla., defeated Spaniard Guillermo Gomez, a former Georgia Tech player, in the singles final, 7-6(3), 6-2. He also teamed with Christina Fusano in mixed doubles to defeat Georgians Frank Solana and Jennifer Sinclair, 6-1, 6-1, in the mixed doubles. Martin did not lose one set in any of his singles or doubles matches. He peaked at No. 38 in the world in doubles in 2008, when he won the ATP event in San Jose, Calif., with Scott Lipsky. He has also advanced to five ATP doubles finals, including in Chennai, India, this year with Robin Haase, and competed in US Open doubles main draws in 1998 and from 2007 to 2010. Fusano, 31, of Plymouth, Calif., competed for the University of California and holds 12 career USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles. In the women’s singles, Amanda McDowell, 23, of Atlanta, defeated 15-year-old junior standout Anne- Liz Jeukeng, of Kansas City, Mo., 6-1, 6-2, for the women’s title. McDowell won the 2008 NCAA women’s singles title at Georgia Tech and received All-America honors. The US Open National Playoffs – Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles Championships will be held in conjunction with the New Haven Open at Yale, an Olympus US Open Series women’s event in August. The US Open National Playoffs – Men’s and Women’s Singles Championships will take place August 18- 21, with the champions earning a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, held the week prior to the US Open. The US Open National Playoffs – Mixed Doubles Championship will take place August 24-27, with the champions receiving a mixed doubles main draw wild card into the 2011 US Open.     Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The 2019 WTA doubles winners – Lucie Hradecka and Andreja Klepac – are joined by the ATP Tour champions – Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek – to headline the early entries. Other notable entries on the women’s side include the teenage pairing of Cincinnati’s 18-year-old Caty McNally and 16-year-old Coco Gauff. Dubbed “McCoco,” the duo won a pair of WTA titles in 2019 – at Washington, D.C. and Luxembourg – and reached the US Open Round of 16. Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, who finished 2019 atop the WTA Porsche Race to Shenzen as the season’s No. 1 team, are also in the field. Reigning Australian Open singles champion Sofia Kenin, a 21-year- old American, has entered with former Western & Southern Open singles and doubles winner Victoria Azarenka. The top two teams in the ATP Tour doubles race are entered in the men’s draw. The No. 1 team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is returning after reaching two straight Western & Southern Open finals. They are joined in the field by the No. 2 team of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo. Mamiit, 34, of South Pasadena, Calif., won the NCAA singles title as a freshman at USC in 1996 and has played in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments. He was a regular at the US Open, competing in either the main draw or the qualifying on 10 occasions and reaching the second round of the main draw in 1999. Mamiit also competes for and captains the Philippines Davis Cup team. In last year’s US Open National Playoffs final, Mamiit lost to Blake Strode, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(1). There are no signing bonuses upon turning pro. Paychecks aren’t automatically deposited on the first and 15 th of the month, and there’s no such thing as a paid vacation. If the players you see at the $75,000 Comerica Challenger this week play well, they’ll get paid well accordingly. The singles champion will nab $10,800 – not bad at all. But that’s just one lucky (and talented) guy out 32 in the draw. And potentially 28 more might’ve traveled to Seascape Sports Club just for the qualifying tournament, to fight for four coveted spots in the main draw, and failed to make it. Some players have to stop touring more because they run out of cash than because they believe they can’t win. That’s why the free housing provided by Seascape club members and other friends of the tournament is so critical. This tournament is called “75+H,” which means there is $75,000 in prize money plus hospitality, which gives the players the option of paying for their own hotel or motel rooms or stay for free with members of the host club. Usually it’s the more established pros who have experienced a level of success through the years who can afford to pay for hotels week after week. But most of the rookies will gladly take up a Seascape member on the offer and shack up with a brand new friend or family.
