If we are not NGONGOTAHA NEWS supposed to swallow The Sunny side of the Mountain - toothpaste because it contains FLUORIDE FREE NGONGOTAHA flouride, then why do Editor Ann Henderson they put it in the water? Email: [email protected] Mob: 027 2379 204 website: www.ngongotahanews.co.nz NEXT DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY 7 MARCH 2018 - 11AM.

I was hoping to start the year on a positive note, BUT, alas NO. Somehow a "car dump" has appeared in the Residential Area of Hood Street, excavations are interesting. At one stage there were 18 vehicles there. I have seen a copy of an email (received from Charles Sturt) where he was assured that the matter was going through due process, whatever that might be, but there seems to be no progress. Secondly, the Cemetery is disgusting. These top two photos were taken on Christmas day, clumps of grass everywhere, mowing second rate. Christmas day when it is most visited by Family. Then I checked it out on the 20th of January and you will see below things haven't improved, and I might add the Cemetery had just been mown. This is also after driving passed the Roundabout in Ngongotaha which has a beautiful growth of dandelion and long grass. To be fair I have bought both these matters to Charles Sturt's notice, who has in turn taken it up with the Contractors, but nothing has improved. WHY ARE WE PAYING RATES???????

An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders some coffee. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the waiter. "Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?" The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a, very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says. "Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things: The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat The bouncer is a blonde girl I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weightlifter The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler "Now, think about it seriously, Mister. Do you still wanna tell that joke?" The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head, and mutters, "No... Not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

A couple were going on a vacation together but the wife had an emergency at work. So they agreed the husband would go as planned and his wife would meet him at the hotel the next day. When the husband got to his hotel and had checked in, he thought he should send his wife a quick email letting her know he'd got there ok. As he typed in her email address, he made a typo and his email was sent to an elderly preacher’s wife whose instead. It just so happened that her husband had sadly died just the day before. When the grieving old preacher's wife checked her emails, she read the one from the holiday maker, let out an awful, loud, piercing scream, and fainted on the floor. At the sound of her falling, her family rushed into the room. They tended to her and then looked at her computer and saw this email on her screen: Dearest Wife, Just checked in to my room. Everything is prepared for your arrival tomorrow. P.S. It sure is hot down here.

Two Golfers were approaching the first tee. The first guy goes into his golf bag to get a ball and says to his friend - "Hey, why don't you try this ball." He draws a green golf ball out of his bag. "Use this one - You can't lose it!" His friend replies, "What do you mean you can't lose it?!!" The first man replies, "I'm serious, you can't lose it. If you hit it into the woods, it makes a beeping sound, if you hit it into the water it produces bubbles, and if you hit it on the fairway, smoke comes up in order for you to find it." Obviously, his friend doesn't believe him, but he shows him all the possibilities until he is convinced. The friend says, "Wow! That's incredible! Where did you get that ball?" The man replies, "I found it."

7 Kaharoa School Ngā mihi o te tau hou We welcomed our school community back to 2018 on Tuesday 30 January with karakia and assembly. It was great to see everyone looking so refreshed after a somewhat mixed bag of weather over the summer holidays. The term has started positively with students who are settled and classrooms which are humming. Term focus: Key Competency: Self Manager- ‘Manage Me’ -Our tamariki who are: adaptable, organised, balanced, goal-focussed. They have the ability to set goals, make plans and evaluate their own progress. This year sees some exciting events planned for the children in terms of school and class events. Meet the Teacher/Parent: This was held on Thursday 1 February. It was wonderful to see so many parents attend. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet as a collective group who are both wanting the best outcomes for our tamariki. WE DESERVE A ROYAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY.

The government recently announced a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the historic abuse of children in state care and it will cover the time period from 1950 to 1999, although people outside that window will be allowed to come forward. We are very pleased about this inquiry.

However, we have asked many times by now for a similar inquiry into our mental health system. Too many people have suffered abuse in our current mental health system with the complaint system not working well for complainants. The trauma and inhumane treatment suffered by many largely go undetected. It is important that people and their families that suffered abuse in the system be allowed a voice. We hear from the government that the ministerial inquiry into mental health and addictions has the same powers as Royal Commission of Inquiry. This inquiry into our mental health and addiction services does NOT have the same powers. For starters it is only nine months long. It is a fast inquiry that will not have the capacity of listening to our people and their families who have been traumatised by the current system.

This inquiry is a ministerial inquiry without the powers to take it to a Royal Commission of Inquiry.

Individual stories will not be listened to simply because it is not a Royal Commission of Inquiry.

Historic abuse of children in state care needs the spotlight and exposure. The same rules should apply for people who have suffered and continue to suffer under the same system. The brutal side of psychiatry can sometimes be inhumane but we are a powerful army of survivors who need to speak up.

Keep signing and sharing your stories as your voice is important. Send us your story to [email protected] and/or send your story to the panel [email protected]. nz and ask that people and their families who have suffered inhumane treatment and suffered abuse while in psychiatric care need their stories to be listened to and that they need to be supported to do so. This can retraumatise many of us.

Thank you for your support. Corinda Taylor (Chair – Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust) https://www.lifematters.org.nz/ 10 11 TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

Prime Minister I must admit I reacted to this announcement as I saw it on Facebook and thought it was just another hoax. Obviously it’s not and I’m delighted for her and her partner as it shows you that she can cope, has a supportive partner and a vision to carry on her duties. It takes a total effort of family and friends to bring a child up into our world and our PM will have the support around her. This will not impact her ability to be PM and it’s no different in my view that Bill English and his wife had six children and they coped so why can’t Jacinda and Clarke? One New Zealand First thing I’m impressed with about this government is the support Rotorua Office for young people those going to tertiary study and increasing paid parental leave, the minimum wage, initiatives with corrections, policing etc etc. Fletcher Ngongotaha Don’t the hanging baskets in the Village look awesome. Great to see the park on the corner of Western road and the 10.00am to 3.00pm one in Domain Avenue being well used. I’m into getting some seating set up at the Domain Avenue park for caregivers. The bridge over the Ngongotaha stream at the back of the shops is also well used and if you see it being vandalised or graffiti on any of council facilities please report to council urgently. Last Wednesday a passenger in the back of a minicab going to Liverpool Street Station leaned forward to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the shaking driver said “are you OK? I’m so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.” The badly shaken passenger apologised to the driver and said, “I didn’t realise that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly.” The driver replied, “No, no, I’m the one who is sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Upon hearing this, the king summoned trainer and healers from the nearby kingdoms. They all tried their best, but couldn’t make the parrot fly! He even asked his courtiers to try to find a way to make the parrot fly but they all failed. The parrot was not moving from his branch at all. Finally, after trying everything, the king thought that maybe he needs someone who may be more familiar with natural habitat. He asked his courtier to get a farmer from the countryside and take him to the parrot to see if he can understand the problem with the parrot. The next morning, the king was thrilled to see the parrot flying high above the palace gardens. He asked his servant to call that farmer to meet him. The servant quickly went and located the farmer, who came and stood before the king. The king asked him, “How did you make the parrot fly?”With his hands folded with respect, the farmer said to the king, “It was very easy, your majesty. I simply cut the branch where the bird was sitting.” Moral: We are all gifted with energy to find a success in our life, but fail to gather a courage which is required to reach heights of success and end up clinging to the things that are familiar to us. One very special recipient is Rotorua’s very own Mike Keefe, retired Detective Sergeant, and now a non-sworn member of police, who received a Queens Service Medal (QSM) for services to the community. Mike has spent the last 30 years volunteering around the Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust, he has been a Justice of Peace since 2000 and served more than 40 years with New Zealand Police. Congratulations Mike we are so proud of you. What you may not know Mike was a key player in the formation of the Whakatupato programme, an initiative providing national firearms safety training to remote and rural communities. He is based at the Rotorua Police Station where he is anArms Officer. Late last year it was wonderful to see Police staff the length of the country get behind the White Ribbon campaign. From hosting stages of the nationwide White Ribbon Ride to local engagement with schools, businesses and other groups, they were promoting that they stand with their communities against violence. "Our staff put in a great effort to raise awareness of the White Ribbon campaign, which is growing every year," says Superintendent Eric Tibbott, National Manager Prevention. "Our work goes on 365 days a year but White Ribbon gives us a welcome opportunity to really engage with communities in a positive way and promote respectful relationships." But remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta. NGONGOTAHA Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program.

Open These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

7 days In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend! Food 3.0 and HotLingerie 7.7.

Good Luck, Tech Support Mon - Sat 7:00am – 7:30pm Two guys are walking through a game park & they come Sunday across a lion that has not eaten for days. They run as fast as they can and the one guy starts getting tired and decides to say a prayer, "Please 1 Hall Road, turn this lion into a Christian, Lord." He looks to see if the Ngongotaha lion is still chasing and he sees the lion on its knees. Happy to T: 07 357 4475 see his prayer answered, he turns around and heads towards the lion.
