As cultivation theory suggests, music cultivates attitudes and beliefs regarding romantic love and relationships modeled by the narratives evident in music. Women are particularly drawn to popular music and, thus, romantic love narratives. However, what happens when a real-life romantic love narrative is afflicted by abuse? What do such narratives cultivate in regards to the acceptance of intimate partner violence (IPV)? Research on battering and battered women raised awareness about battering. Lenore Walker’s The Battered Woman published in 1979, perhaps the most comprehensive research to date regarding IPV, revealed the common dynamics of an abusive relationship and introduced the Cycle of Violence (COV), a repetitive cycle consisting of three phases. As such, a narrative analysis of top 1980’s love songs was conducted to first, identify common narratives of romantic love between intimate partners present in the lyrics and then examine these narratives through narratives of abuse, including the COV.

First, music theorists from the 1980s adopt a positivist mindset and look for ways to quantify timbral phenomena, often using spectrograms, while avoiding any cultural dimensions in their work. Second, writings of the past five years focus on the cultural as- pects of timbre but make no use of spectrograms. This dissertation builds upon these two ap- proaches by synthesizing them: discussion is grounded in spectrogram analysis, but situated within a broad cultural context, through interactions with listener experience and ethno- graphic study of music periodicals and other published interviews. The theory is applicable to any genre of music, but 1980s popular music is used as a case study, with a particular fo- cus on the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer, used in much of this music.

Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2018 Dissertation Committee: David Huron, Advisor Eugenia Costa-Giomi Robert Bond c Copyright by Hubert Léveillé Gauvin 2018 Abstract This dissertation investigates popular music compositional practices and music listening choice behavior in studies that attempt to uncover whether technological changes have had an impact on songwriting techniques, and whether music listening choice behavior can be predicted by these compositional devices. The underlying theory unifying this work is the theory of attention economy: how attention can be analyzed using supply and demand principles to explain and predict information content and human behavior. Two corpus studies were conducted to evaluate whether compositional practices in popular music have changed in the last decades in a way that is consistent with the theory of attention economy. The results suggest that, as predicted, composi- tional practices have changed in a way that favors attention-grabbing behavior. The strongest change observed was the near elimination of instrumental introductions between 1986 and 2015. Building on these results, two behavioral experiments were conducted to test whether these changes are effective ways to grab listeners’ attention. In the first experiment, participants were asked to listen to randomly sampled songs in an un- divided attention setting, while in the second experiment, an independent group of participants was asked to listen to a subset of the same songs in a divided attention setting.
