THE AISMV BULLETIN October, 2020 Page3 JUNIOR JUNCTION ARTICLE SHUBH SRIVASTAVA IV-A Festival which symbolizes the victory of virtue over evil Dussehra is one of the most popular festivals of India celebrated in almost every part of the country. It is celebrated for a period of ten days, beginning on the first day of the month of Ashwin. Dussehra is celebrated to commemorate Rama’s victory over the demon King Ravana whose effigy is burnt with great jubilation. On this occasion Rama's story is enacted by the actors on the stage. It is known as `Ramlila'. In Mysore, two processions are taken out which are a splendid sight, full of grandeur. In Calcutta, this festival is called `Durga Puja', for Durga, the Goddess of Power, had helped Rama in his fight against Ravana. In Gujarat it is known as` Navratra', festival of nine nights. This grand festival precedes SHORT STORY HELPFULNESS SAKSHAM IV-C Once there was a girl named Riley. The only thing was that she could not walk. One day at the school the teacher had written ‘Sports Day’. Riley sat outside the school on a bench. She heard a bird chirping. She checked below the bench and saw a bird. She helped the bird back to its nest. Once the mother bird saw the baby bird back in the nest, the mother bird said to Riley, “ Thank you for saving my child. Take these shoes, they are magical.” She took the shoes, wore it and suddenly she could walk. She went to her parents without her crutches. Moral: Always help people. THE AISMV BULLETIN October, 2020 Page4 JUNIOR JUNCTION BOOK REVIEW “Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls” HIMAMBRI TEWATIA V- C Here I am presenting before you my very first book review. The book I have chosen is “Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls” by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo, published by Particular Books in the year 2016.The book opens with a quote; “To the rebel girls of the world: Dream bigger, Aim higher, Fight harder And, when in doubt, remember You are right”. In this book the writers have presented a collection of hundred girls who have followed their pas- sion in life, despite many hardships posed by the society in gen- eral. The girls covered in this book are from different backgrounds: politicians, mathematicians, scientists, dancers, gymnastics, and so on. This book tells us that boys and girls are equal, and girls can even do better than boys in many fields. MOVIE REVIEW MATILDA - SHREEJA IV-C Have you seen the movie Matilda (1996). I recently watched it and liked it so much that I watched it 5 times. This fantastic movie is about a girl named Matilda, a young gifted girl who is unappreciated by her parents and also had attended a school which was run by a tyrant Principal, Miss Trunchbull. Miss Honey, a kind and sweet teacher helps Ma- tilda to teach a lesson to the tyrant head mistress. If you like some magic and some sweet revenge, this is definitely a movie you should check out with your family this weekend .Matilda was a book lover, if you are one too, then read Matilda’s story written by Roald Dahl too. • Significance of Navratri
Significance of Navratri The 9 divine nights are significant with three days each devoted to worship of Ma Durga- the Goddess of Valour, Ma Lakshmi – the Goddess of Wealth and Ma Saraswati- the Goddess of Knowledge. The tenth day celebrated on 08 October is know as Vijay Dashmi (Vijay meaning victory and Dash means ten) is to worship, chant and pray to the mother giving thanks to her for showering her mercy upon us and to celebrate the victory that we have achieved over our enemies which as the vices contained within ourselves. One should make full use of these 10 days to take stock of one’s life and make changes to be a good, loving and caring person. Observing the period ritualistically and not wanting Mother Durga to assist and free us from her clutches of repeated birth, old age, disease and death will mean that this is a religious observance and will not benefit us in anyway whatsoever. The word Durga is derived from the word Durg which means prison house. Therefore the name Durga refers to that great personality who is in charge of and controller of the Karma of every human being on this planet. Our prayer to the mother should therefore be that she frees us from this prison so as to allow us to go back home, back to Godhead. She is compared to the warden of a prison who will recommend parole to that person who has asked to be forgiven for his offences and have made amends to lead a better life.

  • Nine Hindu Goddesses
First day – 16 October 2012 “Shailaputri” (literally meaning daughter of the mountains) is the first form of the Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the first day of Navaratri. Diversely known as Sati Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati, the daughter of Hemavana - the king of the Himalayas, she is the first among the nine manifestations of the Goddess or the “Navadurgas”. She is believed to be the embodiment of the power of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. She rides a bull and carries a trident and a lotus in her two hands. Second Day - 17 October 2012 “Brahmacharini ”, is the second form of the Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the second day of Navaratra. Bharmacharini means the one who practices devout austerity. She holds a rosary in her right hand and a water utensil in her left hand. She is in a state of bliss and bestows happiness, peace, prosperity and grace upon all her devotees. Filled with bliss and happiness, she is the way to liberation or Moksha. Third Day - 18 October 2012 “Chandraghanta ”, is the third form of the Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the third day of Navaratra. The Hindus pray to her for peace, tranquility and prosperity in life. She has a ‘chandra’ or half moon on her forehead that is in the shape of a ‘ghanta’ or bell. This is why she is called ‘Chandraghanta’. She has a golden bright complexion and rides a lion. She has ten hands, three eyes and holds weapons in her hands. She is the apostle of bravery and possesses great strength to fight in battles against demons.
