Statistical Abstract Manipur 2007 STATISTICAL ABSTRACT MANIPUR 2007 DIRECTORATE OF ECONOMICS & STATISTICS GOVERNMENT OF MANIPUR IMPHAL PREFACE The current issue of the “Statistical Abstract Manipur, 2007” is the seventh in the series. According to the recommendation of the Fifth Conference of Central and State Statistical Organizations (COCSSO), the publication is supposed to be an annual publication but it has not been possible to do so. Attempts are made to review the subject coverage of the Statistical Abstract by following the recommendations of the Working Group. The current issue incorporates the latest available data under different heads of economic and social development. It gives state aggregates at convenient intervals in order to enable to grasp a comprehensive picture of the trends of socio-economic development of Manipur in terms of quantitative measures. This issue also presents the population of 1971, 1981 and 1991 on the basis of the jurisdiction of districts prevailing in 2001 Census. The latest data are presented at the district levels as far as practicable. The statistical abstract is a reasonably comprehensive source document for authentic data on various sectors of the state economy especially targeted to users having no access to statistical returns/publications of various individual source agencies. The concepts and definitions followed in the abstract are those recommended by the working group to afford comparability across the States/UTs. The statistics presented in different tables of this publication are those furnished by different Govt./Semi-Govt. Departments/Organization/Institutions. The continued and generous co-operation extended to this Directorate by various offices of the Central Govt., State Govt. and public undertakings, in making available the requisite data for the abstract is gratefully acknowledged. Without their supports, the Directorate would not be able to bring out the publication in time. The publication has been prepared by the coordination and publication (COP) Unit of the Directorate. The sincerity and hard work put in by all the employees involved in the preparation of this issue are gratefully acknowledged. This acknowledgement cannot be concluded without appreciation to all the Govt. /Semi-Govt. Organizations/Institutions for extending their valuable cooperation in making available authoritative data. It is hoped that this publication will be of great help to the data users. There is of course rooms for further improvements in the quality, coverage, timeliness and even in the mode of presentation. Suggestions towards this end are most welcome. OINAM BIREN SINGH Imphal, Director of Econ.& Statistics, The 29th June, 2008 Manipur. Working Group on Information Technology TFYP WORKING GROUP Sr. No. 73/2001 REPORT OF THE WORKING GROUP ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FORMULATION OF THE TENTH FIVE YEAR PLAN GOVERNMENT OF INDIA PLANNING COMMISSION November, 2001 Working Group on Information Technology Foreword The advancement in information technology has a profound impact in country's economy, thus the quality of human life. The convergence of computer, communications and content creates tremendous opportunities as well as challenges. The IT revolution will be of much greater significance than the Industrial Revolution of 17th century. This revolution has opened up new possibilities of economic and social transformations from which both developed and developing countries can potentially benefit. In the context of preparation of the Tenth Five Year Plan (2002-07), the Government has constituted a Working Group on Information Technology sector to make recommendations on the various policy matters to enable to formulate the Tenth Five Year Plan for Communication and Information sector. This report is the result of efforts of the Members of the Working Group drawn from a cross section of the IT community and seven specialized, subject specific Study Teams. India does have enormous opportunities emerging from globalization and consequent lowering of tariff barriers. These need to be consolidated through brand equity, marketing contacts, upgrading of manpower skill base, moving up the value chain, better infrastructure and economies of scale through larger domestic market base, R&D especially on e-Security aspects and strengthening of hardware sector. There is urgent need to strengthen IT infrastructure both for software exports and citizen centric interface.

Reading continuities and change in vernacular architecture among the Hao Naga Somingam Mawon Vol. 4, No. 2, pp. 182–194 | ISSN 2050-487X | www.southasianist.ed.ac.uk 2016 | The South Asianist 4 (2): 182-194 | pg. 182 Vol. 4, No. 2, pp. 182-194 Reading continuities and change in vernacular architecture among the Hao Naga SOMINGAM MAWON, North-Eastern Hill University The Hao (Tangkhul) people are among the largest of the Naga tribes, and are settled on either side of the India and Myanmar border. Prior to the arrival of the British, Hao villages were largely peripheral to the modernising forces that brought about significant change in political centres such as Imphal, the capital of Manipur. The increasing presence of the British administrative apparatus along with the advent of Christianity introduced significant changes most notably western forms of education and governance. The establishment of institutions at variance with indigenous forms created hybridisations in both religious and social arenas, significantly altering local Hao world views. Forms of visual and material culture absorb new influences, and this paper presents types, meanings, and motifs associated with social status among the Hao as indexed in vernacular architecture. Material culture is a concrete and visible marker of human ingenuity, intelligence, and reason. We might also say that the relationship between objects and human social institutions is visible across time and space. For the Hao communities in Northeast India and Myanmar, cultural knowledge is located mainly in performative idioms such as music, lore, in narrated myths and songs, and these are preserved and transmitted inter- generationally through performance and oral narration.
