The institution apart from ‘chalk and talk’ mode of teaching and learning also practices of using ICT to make teaching and learning more effective and creative too. Teachers use video and audio in the classrooms wherever it is relevant and necessary to make subjects more informative and to bring in clarity. Several faculty members open the day’s session with a brief summarization of last session lecture by a student and the day’s session is closed again by the brief summarization of the topic taught by a student. The institution has started Any Body Can Teach Program’ to inculcate peer learning and presentations skills among students. Under this program, students are assigned topics/prose/poetry to be explained by them to their peer, this is done under the supervision of the mentor. At the end of each session, students are allowed to debate. This helps students ‘to enquire, articulate question’ and simultaneously helps the presenter to compose his topic and the skill to defend his presentation. The faculties discuss some practical case studies with students to enhance interest in learning.

Page 64/67 10-08-2018 03:15:49 Self Study Report of GOVT FIRST GRADE COLLEGE

Best Practices

1.Morning Assembly: Every morning assembly is conducted at college premises at 9.50am. The assembly starts with the rendition of National Anthem. Students on rotation basis read the highlights of the news paper. Daily one selected student narrates the gathering on any particular aspects such as current events, values, ethics, communal Harmony, discipline. 2.Any Body Can Teach (ABCT): As a peer learning program, the institution has a practice in the name of Any Body Can Teach. In this 2nd year B.A and B.Com students will teach 1st Year students on any of the topic of their interest. Similarly, 3rd year B.A and B.Com students will teach 1st and 2nd year students on any relevant topic. The main objective of this program is to bring self confidence among the students by overcoming stage fear and overall personality development. The institution feels proud to mention that, in a semester 65 students have participated and made it successful. 3.Students for Social Service: The institution has formed S3 Club which is a collaboration of NSS, Youth Red Cross and Rovers and Rangers Units. The volunteers of this club take up social activities.. The volunteers visit the Government Higher Primary School and anganavadi Kendra. They teach them regarding personal hygiene, importance of good health and healthy food habits. The faculty joins the volunteers to teach other skills to the kids. These two practices are to develop ‘human values’ and ‘social concern’ among the learners. The institution believes along with ‘quality education’ a learner must imbibe ‘concern and care towards the fellow beings’. 4.Financial Aid to the deserving students: Many of our students are from the rural areas with low economic back ground. Their parents are unable to provide them a sustained financial support because agriculture, being a gamble with rain in this place, is not a source of assured income. Hence, the noble objectives of the practice are : To extend financial aid to the poor students, especially from the rural, to save them from discontinuation of their studies owing to poverty and to inculcate the values of ‘generosity’ and a ‘sense of social responsibility’ among the students.

7.3 Institutional Distinctiveness 7.3.1 Describe/Explain the performance of the institution in one area distinctive to its vision, priority and thrust

The institution trains its students in soft skill development, platform performances, and competitive exams and in other career building programs. The institution has a dedicated team of faculty for creating skilled youth force and attempts to train students by providing them market or industry oriented training. The institution is very much aware of the responsibility towards students and do very best to provide a most friendly and growth oriented ambience for them. It will do everything in its capacity to ensure excellent standards that would secure them leadership in tomorrow’s challenging world.

5. CONCLUSION

Additional Information :

The College is located in a small town called Bharamasagara which is a centre for more than 60 villages. Major population of these villages is concentrated by Socio-Economically weak and downtrodden people. The college is ideally located to serve this rural student folk, especially for female students who have social restrictions for studying in faraway places.

Concluding Remarks :

The Government First Grade College, Bharamasagara having been established in the year of 2007 prefers to opt for Accreditation for the first time, keeping in view of the quality drive undertaken by the NAAC. The college has been scrupulously following all the norms and standards as prescribed by the Department of Collegiate Education, University and the UGC. This is one institution which takes pride of being located in a rural and backward area and being a source of higher education to the downtrodden people. In spite of various difficulties the institution is making all efforts to provide quality education and cater the needs of the students of this region. With the efforts being put in, by the college, we hope to be accredited on a reasonable grade and points.
