  • CSW12 Complete Variants
CSW12 Complete Variants David Sutton Introduction This document seeks to provide a comprehensive tabulation of variant spelling forms in CSW12, for words up to nine letters in length. It can be viewed as a big brother to 'CSW12 New Variants', which dealt only with new variants introduced in CSW12: that is to say, new words which were simply variant forms of words already existing in CSW7. Again, the idea is to ease at least marginally the task of word learning by grouping the words into 'variant spelling' sets. The following provisos should be noticed. only root forms are listed. It can normally be taken for granted that inflections follow suit. I have not sought to include inflectional variants such as LABELED/LABELLED. only root forms with nine or fewer letters are included, though if these have variant spellings with more than nine letters, those are shown. the large number of –ISE/-IZE variants are omitted. Since CSW7 it can overhelmingly be assumed that any verb ending in –ISE has a corresponding –IZE form; there are exceptions like ADVISE, CHASTISE, DESPISE and FRANCHISE but few that are likely to seduce one into error. it must be remembered that some variants may possess part of speech properties not possessed by other variants of that form. For example, in the case of ALARM/ALARUM/LARUM ALARM and ALARUM are both noun and verb, but LARUM is noun only. Similarly, in the case of ALATE/ALATED, ALATE is both adjective and noun and so can take an –S, but ALATED is adjective only. I have assumed that Scrabble players serious enough to be interested in this document are likely to be aware of such nuances, or prepared to research the matter further on their own account.

  • The Vulnerable Body in Contemporary South African Literature
THE VULNERABLE BODY IN CONTEMPORARY SOUTH AFRICAN LITERATURE IMKE VAN HEERDEN PHD UNIVERSITY OF YORK ENGLISH JULY 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis examines a selection of South African literary texts written in English and published after 2000, arguing that these works of literature illustrate the ways in which the exigencies of the vulnerable body – brutal violence, HIV/AIDS, and social inequality – complicate attempts to transcend discrimination in contemporary South Africa. Consequently, the study concentrates on representations of the vulnerable body which specifically destabilise fixed categories of identity, thus instantiating the literary ethics of interconnection that comprises its main focus. Each of the five chapters, “Sex”, “Skin”, “Blood”, “Taste”, and “Tongue”, considers a primary text by one South African author, foregrounding a particular body part that plays an important role in the work’s exploration of vulnerability. The thesis engages with different genres, which range from narrative non-fiction to cyberpunk, in addition to diverse and controversial subject positions such as “victim”, “coloured”, “HIV-positive”, “cool”, and “Afrikaner”. The selected texts develop new modes of understanding the body’s vulnerability in order to unsettle the binary oppositions that continue to shape post-apartheid society. Discursive strategies by which this is achieved include Margie Orford’s “counter- derivatisation” in Like Clockwork, Zoë Wicomb’s tact in Playing in the Light, Jonny Steinberg’s clash of epistemologies in Three Letter Plague, Lauren Beukes’s aesthetics of cool in Moxyland, and Antjie Krog’s vocabulary of grace in A Change of Tongue. Following Fanon’s plea, “O my body, always make me a man who questions!”, the ideal post-apartheid author would be one who draws on the body’s potential for self- definition, ambiguity, and change in spite of decades of deep-seated discrimination.

  • Variant Spellings
CSW Variant Spellings **** Now amended for CSW19 **** David Sutton Introduction This document seeks to provide a comprehensive selection of variant spelling forms in CSW19, for words up to nine letters in length. It is offered principally for linguistic interest, but may also ease at least marginally the task of word learning by grouping the words into 'variant spelling' sets. The following provisos should be noticed. · only root forms are listed. It can normally be taken for granted that inflections follow suit. · only root forms with nine or fewer letters are included, except that if these have variant spellings with more than nine letters, those longer spellings are shown. · it must be remembered that some variants may possess part of speech properties not possessed by other variants of that form. For example, in the case of ALARM/ALARUM/LARUM, ALARM and ALARUM are both noun and verb, but LARUM is noun only. I have assumed that Scrabble players serious enough to be interested in this document are likely to be aware of such nuances, or prepared to research the matter further on their own account. Similarly, some variant spelling may possess additional meanings not shared by others e.g. HECKLE can mean to interrupt a speaker as well as being a variant of HACKLE/HATCHEL, a kind of comb. I have not attempted to indicate all possible meanings. · this document restricts itself to variant spellings. It is not about words unrelated by spelling which refer to the same thing. For example, KAAMA is another name for the HARTBEES, HARTBEEST or HARTEBEEST, but you won't find that here.

  • A Design Indaba Project Africa Is NOW a Design Indaba Project an Exhibition of Design, Décor and Architecture from Across Africa
A Design Indaba Project africa is NOW A Design indabA project An exhibition of design, décor and architecture from across Africa. Africa is rejecting the descriptions that have historically defined it and is instead becoming the new benchmark for growth and innovation. Contextual solutions that have sprouted from the fertile creative soils of Africa are in demand worldwide, redefining the traditional exchange between the so-called first and third worlds. This exhibition is a snapshot of creative work being produced across the continent right now: an up-to-the-minute survey of emerging, established and unexpected talent from across Africa. It is not a retrospective of a typecast past nor a utopian vision of an imagined future. It reflects the Africa that is. The Africa Is Now exhibition is not just a one-off focus on Africa; it heralds a platform-wide fundamental shift for Design Indaba. While we remain committed to incubating and celebrating South African design, our mission over time will be to celebrate and grow African creativity and provide a platform for it in South Africa, and beyond. Kicking off this long-term commitment is this centrepiece exhibition at Design Indaba Expo 2014, which brings together the work of 66 designers and innovators from 25 African countries. The work featured here was sourced through a call for entries put out to creative communities across the continent. Further contributions were received from our advisory panel of international design leaders with roots in Africa, including product designers Bibi Seck and Ayse Birsel; fashion designer Ozwald Boateng; architects David Adjaye, Francis Kéré, Joe Osae-Addo and Kunlé Adeyemi; Financial Times writer Lucia van der Post; and mobile technology entrepreneur Rapelang Rabana.

  • The Case of Two Family Businesses in South Africa, Pp
Market and entrepreneurial vision: The case of two family businesses in South Africa, pp. 65-87 Market and entrepreneurial vision: The case of two family businesses in South Africa Suzanne van Eeden-Allen Grietjie Verhoef University of Johannesburg University of Johannesburg [email protected] [email protected] Abstract The question of “why do some family enterprises survive into successive generations, while other succumb to contextual constraints?” elicited different responses. Explanations vary from that it might be inherent to the industry, or the structure of the firm, or simply market opportunism. In seeking a deeper insight on the impact of industry or structural constraints in the general area of family businesses, this article considers the local South African shoe industry. The article reflects on the history of footwear manufacture in South Africa; how it started and grew from cottage industries to a more main stream, modern manufacturing industry. The article attempts to place this industry and its development in a broader current context by considering the impact of exogenous factors, namely globalisation and cheap shoe imports from the East on the South African footwear industry. To investigate the impact of the afore mentioned constraints, the article discusses the birth and growth of two footwear manufacturing family businesses – one operating in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape Province, the other one in Kwazulu-Natal Province – and considers the divergent development trajectories, different styles of management and subsequently, the completely different outcomes of these footwear manufacturing family enterprises. Keywords: History; Shoe Industry; Family business; Strategy; Protectionism; Entrepreneurial typologies; Entrepreneurial foresight. Introduction The South African shoe industry emerged relatively late into the manufacturing sector as South African industrialisation only became a dedicated state policy during the 1920s.

  • Fashion Design
Fashion is a general term for a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion refers to a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style with which a person dresses, as well as to prevailing styles in behaviour. Fashion also refers to the newest creations of textile designers.[1] The more technical term, costume, has become so linked to the term "fashion" that the use of the former has been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while "fashion" means clothing more generally and the study of it. Although aspects of fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends are androgynous.[2][3] Fashion design Fashion design is the art of the application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social latitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories; and, because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, must at times anticipate changing consumer tastes. Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear falls within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for special occasions, such asevening wear or party dresses.
