Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

Jason Schwartzman Elisabeth Moss Jonathan Pryce Krysten Ritter Joséphine de La Baume Listen Up Philip a film by Alex Ross Perry Following up his critically acclaimed THE COLOR WHEEL, Alex Ross Perry scripts a complex, intimate and highly idiosyncratic comedy filled withNew Yorkers living their lives somewhere between individuality and isolation. Jason Schwartzman leads an impressive cast including Elisabeth Moss, Krysten Ritter and Jonathan Pryce, balancing Perry’s quick-witted dialogue and their characters’ painful, personal truths. With narration by Eric Bogosian, we switch perspectives as seasons and attitudes change, offering a literary look into the lives of these individuals and the triumph of reality over the human spirit. Listen Up Philip was produced by Washington Square Films (the company’s follow-up film to the acclaimed All Is Lost) and Sailor Bear Productions, the team behind the 2013 Sundance hit Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. SYNOPSIS Anger rages in Philip (Jason Schwartzman) as he awaits the publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elisabeth Moss), and his own indifference to promoting the novel. When Philip’s idol Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce) offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject – himself. Philip faces mistakes and miseries affecting those around him, including his girlfriend, her sister, his idol, his idol’s daughter, and all the ex-girlfriends and enemies that lie in wait on the open streets of New York.

  • Finding Refuge in King Lear: from Brexit to Shakespeare's European
Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance vol. 19 (34), 2019; http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/2083-8530.19.07 ∗ Stephen O’Neill Finding Refuge in King Lear: From Brexit to Shakespeare’s European Value Abstract: This article considers how Shakespeare’s King Lear has become a Brexit play across a range of discourses and media, from theatre productions and journalism to social media. With its themes of division and disbursement, of cliff edges and tragic self- immolation, Lear is the Shakespearean play that has been turned to as metaphor and analogy for the UK’s decision following the 23 June 2016 referendum to leave the European Union. Reading this presentist application of Shakespeare, the article attends to Shakespeare as itself a discourse through which cultural ideas, both real and imaginary, about Brexit and the EU are negotiated. It asks how can we might remap Lear in this present context―what other meanings and histories are to be derived from the play, especially in Lear’s exile and search for refuge, or in Cordelia’s departure for and return from France? Moving from a consideration of a Brexit Lear to an archipelagic and even European Lear, this article argues that Shakespeare is simultaneously a site of supranational connections and of a desire for values of empathy and refuge that reverberate with debates about migration in Europe. Keywords: Shakespeare; Brexit; EU; Maps; Archipelago; Presentism; Refuge. Give me the map there. (Shakespeare, King Lear, Act 1, Scene 1, line 35)1 This is like a Shakespearean tragedy where everyone is trying to do what is right.
