Entering 2017-18 as the five-time defending champions in the OUA, the McMaster Marauders got off to an inauspicious start, losing their opening match of the regular season to the in four sets, after sweeping a two-match series against the defending NCAA champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes in non-conference play.

McMaster responded by winning 14 consecutive conference matches, and another two-match series against top NCAA competition when the Long Beach State 49ers visited Hamilton over the holiday break. Upset by the in four sets to snap their streak on February 17, the Marauders rebounded by sweeping their season- ending match against the Trent Excalibur and securing the top playoff seed in the OUA West division.

Once in the postseason, McMaster swept aside the to advance to their sixth consecutive OUA Final Four tournament on home court, where they followed with a four-set win over the in a March 9 semi final, before making OUA history with a Forsyth Cup final sweep of the Queen’s Gaels.

That result secured the Marauders as the longest championship dynasty in the history of OUA men’s volleyball, breaking the previous record of five consecutive titles held by the (1995-99).

Outside hitter Andrew Richards became the fifth consecutive Marauder to be named as an OUA Player of the Year, winning the OUA West honour, while coach Dave Preston repeated as OUA West Coach of the Year (his fifth coach of the year award).

A total of four Marauders were named to OUA all-star and all-rookie teams, with Richards, Brandon Koppers and Matt Passalent all cracking the OUA West First Team, while middle Bennett Swan was among the OUA West All-Rookie Team.

4 4 2017-2018 McMaster Men’s Volleyball Media Guide 2017-2018 McMaster Men’s Volleyball Media Guide HEAD COACH DAvE PRESTOn

In his 16th season on the Marauders sideline, Dave Preston has seen his team reach historic heights, even while they remain on the hunt for the elusive national title.

Under Preston’s guidance, the Marauders have captured nine OUA Championships and have participated in 11 Championships. The team has captured two silver and three bronze medals at the last five national tournaments. McMaster’s streak of six consecutive OUA Championships is a new conference record, breaking the previous mark of five set by the Toronto Varsity Blues between 1995 and 1999.

In addition to his varsity exploits, Preston has been involved with Canada’s national program, spending two years as the head coach of the Canadian Junior Men’s National Team, which represented Canada at the 2014 U21 World Championship held in Turkey. He was also an assistant coach for the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team that won a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan Am Games, held in Winnipeg. That Canadian team was enshrined in Volleyball Canada’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

In building a perennially-strong team, Coach Preston has seen the McMaster program achieve numerous individual accolades. Under his watch, the Marauders have produced 44 OUA All-Stars, 13 All-Canadians, five OUA Rookies of the Year, two CIS Rookies of the Year, 22 members of the OUA All-Rookie team, and one CIS Fair Play Award winner. His players have won the OUA Player of the Year award in each of the past five seasons.

Coach Preston has himself been recognized by his peers as both the OUA and CIS Coach of the Year in each of the 2007-08, 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons, and was the OUA West Coach of the Year consecutively in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Always an advocate of team as family, Preston gets terrific support at home from his own family, wife Gloria and daughters Grace and Gabrielle, who can be seen cheering on the Marauders at almost every home game.
