Our expertise applied to your grinding processes
The VSM Technical Center (TC) at the company headquarters in Hanover provides product training, technical abrasives seminars and extensive appli- cation tests. This is because we want to pass on our detailed knowledge of abrasives and processes to our customers and business partners.
Our seminars are tailor-made for end-users and dealers and are offered in a variety of languages. As well as explaining the theoretical aspects of grind- ing, our seminars focus on experiencing things, trying things out and learning in a practical way.
The effect that grinding parameters have on the surface quality, durability of the abrasive, and machining capacity is an important component of the training. Furthermore, our participants receive information on measurement techniques and cost Grinding trials are one of the key focuses of the assessment in the grinding process. VSM Technical Center (TC)

2. Maker coat
The maker coat holds the abrasive grain in place. In most cases, phenolic resins or urea resins are used as bonding agents. Specific properties such as flexibility or water-resistance are achieved by adding fillers.
3. Abrasive grain
It is the abrasive grain which performs the actual job. It penetrates the workpiece and lifts the chip. High hardness, toughness and sharp edges are the
most important characteristics of an abrasive grain. Hardness and toughness of different types of grain High-performance abrasives are made from the Hardness Toughness following synthetic materials: 100 % > Silicon carbide 80 % > Aluminium oxide (corundum)

The VSM self-sharpening concept
The microcrystalline structure of the VSM CERAMICS Plus and VSM CERAMICS grain accounts for a more subtle breaking down of the grain and constantly produces sharper edges. This is what we call the optimized self-sharpening effect.
Aluminium oxide and zirconium oxide are finely dispersed throughout the microstructure of the VSM ZIRCONIA ALUMINIA. The two materials break down in turn during the grinding process.
VSM COMPACTGRAIN Plus and VSM COMPACTGRAIN long-term abrasives stand for a compact unit which consists of numerous abrasive grains. The used grains are torn out by the cutting forces involved whereby unused grain tips are being exposed.

Typees of coating
Different types of coating are used in order to ben- efit as much as possible from the grain properties and the space between the grains for chip removal. VSM uses standard, combination and open types of coating. Standard coating
In a Standard coat the grain is bonded to the maker coat with the grain in an upright position. The gap between the grains may be narrow (closed coating density) or medium (coating density medium closed).
Standard coating When applying a Combi coat supporting grains are placed in the gaps between the grains in order to retain the grain in position. This type of coating works best for applications where a machine limits the contact pressure.
Combi coating In an Open coat the grain is again in an upright posi- tion on the backing. However, the spacing between the abrasive grains is much bigger. The pressure spreads onto fewer grains so that the individual grain has to absorb much more of it. This in turn enhances the self-sharpening effect (page 23) and improves Open coating the chip removal.
Coating techniques The orientation of the grains is decisive for the sur- face quality of the workpiece. VSM uses two different coating techniques to properly orientate the grains: electrostatic coating and mechanical coating.
The electrostatic coating process is a method electrode substrate where the grains are not scattered onto a substrate. - They move upwards and accelerate towards the
substrate while travelling through an electrostatic abrasive grain field. During this process the grains are oriented electrostatic to achieve an upright position, in which they are field conveyor bonded to the substrate. VSM has its own facilities + electrode to integrate this process in-house. The result is a product with maximum sharpness. The principle of electro static coating

4. Size coat General
The size coat ensures proper anchoring of the abra- sive grain. While the maker coat only adheres the grain to the backing, the size coat unites with the maker coat and ensures the final anchoring of the grain and the proper total adhesive level. VSM adds fillers to its products which have a cooling effect and improve the efficiency of the abrasive.
5. Additional grinding active layer
VSM abrasives may have up to three different additional coats. Conventional abrasive without additional coat
