Study Guide for Vernal Pool Branchiopod Test

The following is a list of the vernal pool branchiopod that are listed or that are most likely to be found in or near the same geographical range as a listed species. Any or all species from this list may be included in the identification test.

1. Artemia sp. (ID to genus OK) 2. coloradensis 3. Branchinecta conservatio 4. Branchinecta dissmilis 5. Branchinecta gigas 6. Branchinecta lindahli 7. Branchinecta lynchi 8. Branchinecta mackini 9. Branchinecta mesovallensis 10. Branchinecta sandiegonensis 11. Eubranchipus serratus (ID to genus OK) 12. Eubranchipus oregonus (ID to genus OK) 13. Lepidurus packardi 14. Linderiella occidentalis (ID to genus OK) 15. Streptocephalus sealii 16. Streptocephalus woottoni 17. Triops longicaudatus (ID to genus OK) 18. Branchinecta longiantenna

The test will be set up with approximately 17 to 20 single-species vials, with one to six specimens in each, and with an additional two or three vials containing two species together. We require that all listed species on the permit being applied for or renewed be accurately identified, along with all species likely to be found near the listed species geographic range.

We give the test by appointment. We encourage those taking the test to bring their own stereoscopes and any reference materials they require to make appropriate identifications. "Soft" forceps, watchglasses, and probes will be provided. When making the appointment, allow enough time to complete the test without rushing (the average time is 3 to 4 hours, but can range from 2 to 8 hours). Please call the Recovery Permit Coordinator at (760) 431-9440 to schedule a test appointment at the Carlsbad Fish and Wildlife Office. Appointments can also be made at the Sacramento Fish and Wildlife Office at (916) 414-6600.
