July 2016 THE WARM-UP RING 2 Young Guns! Profiling Chris Surbey by Lauren Fisher

“When I made the transition to Jill’s barn, that is where I started really moving up,” Surbey said of his progression. “I had jumped up to 1.40m here and there, but she really took me to that next level. She always made sure I had something to ride. I got lots of experience riding some of her up-and-coming young , and I was exposed to a lot of the training process that I had not seen before.”

Surbey was working for Henselwood when she represented Canada at the 2012 London Olympic Games and had the opportunity to watch the progression of her Olympic mount, George, from the time the horse arrived at the farm as a seven-year- old. Witnessing first- Henselwood’s process of taking a young horse all the way up to the Olympic level was inspiring for Surbey as he set out on his own career path.

Right now, we are also planning a trip to Europe for the rest of the summer. I have been named to the team for Samorin, so we are building a circuit around that.”

Surbey is excited to take the next big step in his career, competing at the CSI3*-W in Bratislava, Slovakia, from July 22-24 and then representing Canada in the Nations’ Cup at the CSIO3* in Samorin, Slovakia from July 29-31. He will be on the Nations’ Cup team in Samorin with up and comers Vanessa Mannix, Brian Morton, and Ali Ramsay, led by his former employer Henselwood in the role of chef d’equipe.

“That will be my first time on the team for Canada wearing the red jacket, so I am pretty excited,” he said. “We do not get a lot of opportunities to be on teams. Even as young riders, it does not happen very often, so it is a very unique experience and I am excited. I think we have a strong team. We all know each other and we will be there to support each other. I think it is everybody’s first team, so we are all in the same boat. It will be great to get my first team event under my belt and build on my experience, and try to keep going for the future.”

Along with his Derby winning mount Quetchup de la Roque, Surbey has horses named Artistic, Arezzo, and Carnaval competing in the FEI divisions. He also has a special young seven- year-old named Chili Pepper SM, a homebred whose name came through the Spruce Meadows’ ‘Name the Foal’ contest. Chris Surbey, pictured here riding Quetchup de la Roque owned by Linda Southern-Heathcott, made his first trip to the Winter Equestrian Festival in “He is really cool,” explained Surbey. “When I first started at Spruce Wellington, FL, this past winter. Meadows, he jumped the .90m division and we have been bringing him up. He won a couple of seven-year-old classes in Wellington Spruce Meadows Media Services this winter, and he jumped the 1.35m competitions in Calgary all summer. He is a pretty exciting prospect for the future, and it is exciting that he is a homebred.”

Working with young horses as well as helping other riders as a professional at Spruce Meadows, Surbey focuses a lot on flatwork in his training.

“I think flatwork is very important,” he explained. “I do a lot of flatwork and gymnastic exercises, as opposed to just jumping for the sake of jumping. I do a lot of lessons, which I really enjoy. It helps bring along the young horses and helps day-to-day with the control that you need on course and keeping your horse balanced. For me personally, to have a young horse do well is as much of an achievement as jumping in the FEI division. You see the horses come along and move up the levels, and if they continue to do well, it is pretty fun.”

Like many young riders, Surbey’s long-term goal is to become a regular on the Canadian Show Jumping Team and, some day, compete at the Olympic Games. Calgary’s Chris Surbey competing with Carnaval in front of a home crowd at Spruce Meadows. “I want to jump at the highest levels at the biggest shows in the world,” he declared. “That is the end goal; that is why I am doing this.
