The Jazz Lines Foundation Inc. PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA andrews sisters series don’t fence me in (1944) The Music: Vic Schoen’s arrangement of the Cole Porter classic Don’t Fence Me In became a huge hit for Bing Crosby with the Andrews Sisters in 1944. Supposedly Crosby went into the studio on July 25, 1944 having not previously seen or heard this song and within 30 minutes, he and the Andrews Sisters had made the recording, which later sold over a million copies and topped the Billboard charts for eight weeks in 1944-45. This is not a difficult arrangement from an instrumental point of view. But, similar to our other Andrews Sisters arrangements, the hard part will be recreating the Andrews Sisters sound of the vocal trio with a solo male vocalist. Woodwind 1 is on clarinet throughout. • Ella Fitzgerald 1944-1947
Ella Fitzgerald: syllabic choice in scat singing and her timbral syllabic development between 1944 and 1947 By Justin Garrett Binek 2 It is common in jazz discourse to praise Ella Fitzgerald as the greatest vocal improviser in the music’s history – Ella in fact declared herself to be exactly that1 - and this is part of the commonly accepted vocal jazz historical narrative. Improvisational methods praise her ideas as “excellent models for students of vocal jazz”2 and “musically and verbally inventive, filled with the joy of her creativity… represent[ing] the essence and pinnacle of scat singing”3; critical commentaries praise her “perfect balance between a steam enginelike propulsion and an ethereal playfulness”4; and reference books mention Fitzgerald as an exemplar of scat singing in definitions of the term5, using phrases like “It is mostly closely associated by the general public with Ella Fitzgerald and her many imitators.”6 Ella’s influence on other singers is illuminated in Chip Deffaa’s profile from Jazz Veterans: A Portrait Gallery7, written shortly before her death in 1996: “No living singer is more respected by other singers.” Deffaa quotes – among others – Annie Ross (“Like Charlie Parker, Ella can think it and execute it.”8), Jon Hendricks (“Ella’s a one-in-a-lifetime.”9), Anita O’Day (“The first time I heard Ella, in 1937, I said, ‘That is the girl. 1 Friedwald, Jazz Singing: America’s Great Voices from Bessie Smith to Bebop and Beyond, 282. 2 Madura, Getting Started with Vocal Improvisation, 29. 3 Stoloff, Scat! They boasted an exuberant, close-harmony style well-suited to cheery novelty songs, and their intricate vocal arrangements and rhythmic ability mirrored the sound of the swing bands that constituted their chief competition in their heyday. For the most part, The Andrews Sisters did not focus on romantic material, but rather sang upbeat songs, often borrowed from other cultures. Although they were well-established by the time the U.S. entered World War II, their optimistic tone made them perfect boosters of the war effort. In later years they remained closely identified with the war years, remembered as wearing military uniforms and singing their signature song: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. The three sisters were born in Minnesota to a Greek immigrant father, Peter Andreos (changed to Andrews upon arriving in the US) and Olga Sollie, a Norwegian-American mother.

Performing Conformity, Unleashing Craft: Female Vocalists of Postwar Pop, 1945-1956 Sarah Elizabeth Culpeper Charlottesville, Virginia B.A., University of Toronto, 1998 B.F.A., Concordia University, 2002 M.A., McGill University, 2005 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia December, 2013 Abstract Performing Conformity, Unleashing Craft: Female Vocalists of Postwar Pop, 1945-1956 By Sarah Elizabeth Culpeper This dissertation centers on female postwar pop singers and the hit records they made between the years 1945 and 1956. I consider the vocal styles of Doris Day, Patti Page and Mary Ford in combination with the personae and images they projected through records and other media. The project serves in part to document and recuperate the sometimes-disparaged genre of postwar pop, and to restore its neglected female singers to popular music history narratives. I glean my understanding of the singing voice from pedagogy and science literature, and from these sources I build a technique-based analytical vocabulary for vocal style. I apply this vocabulary to close readings and interpretations of the singers’ hit recordings, and I bring my readings into dialogue with historical reception discourse. To understand how the singers may have resonated with postwar audiences beyond the vocal dimension, I connect the images they projected to historical scholarship about gender and sexuality in postwar America. All three singers presented a degree of conformity while also complicating the era’s mores. Day never transgressed norms of postwar sexual propriety, yet the discourse around her appeal suggests that audiences found her sexually desirable.
