Were you at last month’s social? It was a wonderful evening spent at Leatherlips Yacht Club on the Scioto River. We had a great time enjoying Dewey’s Pizza and salads (thanks to Eric Kohl), and talking with friends. While there, I spoke with Linda Grossglass about long-distance travels. You may recall that she and Hal were last month’s Porschephiles, and they shared photos of their travels around the United States. I’m amazed at how much she and Hal enjoy touring in their car, and am seriously impressed at how many suitcases and bags they can stuff into it -- and still be comfortable. It sounds like they have perfected the art of packing, which is exactly how you want to be if you are embarking on an adventure. Speaking of adventure, while some of you are making plans to drive cross country (I’m talking to you, Harry Hoffman), Chip and Connor Henderson were there and back (page 6). Still others took to racetracks and car courses. Last month’s IMS was a weekend to remember for both Porsche drivers and Yellow Shirts, pictured right. Most recently, there was Mid-Ohio’s HPDE for Porsche drivers, from the novice to the experienced (page 18). Every month, I have the privilege to attend MORPCA business meetings. What do I take away from these meetings? This group of volunteers clearly enjoys what they do, and enjoys being a team to get things done. Sure, some people have specific roles on the board, and yet they are open and willing to jump in and help anyone and everyone as needed. Plus, no one is taking all the credit for anything -- it is clearly a group effort. I love that spirit. Interested in attending the business meetings or joining the team? See page 10 for information. Back to that gorgeous evening of socializing at Leatherlips. After we bid good-bye, we point- ed north to head home. As the sun dipped low behind the trees, we talked about the night’s events while watching the road. Suddenly, a deer was right there, posing regally, contemplat- ing its next step down. More specifically, I was looking up at its chin and chest. We estimated that if it had stepped into the road, its body would have hit Der Passagiersitz. There wasn’t time to react...and we passed the deer and laughed nervously. Frankly, we dodged a doe- shaped bullet. Be safe out there, ladies and gentlemen, so you can live to share your stories. Jen

Editor’s Note: My sincerest apologies for misspelling Hal Grossglass in last month’s DOS. Sailing, Socializing and a Sunset on the Hoover Oh, What A Night! at the picturesque Hoover Sailing Club, the site of September’s Third Thursday Social. Members dodged some road construction to socialize, enjoy adult beverages, and dig into a few burgers, courtesy of Grillmaster Gerhard Hillmann. Stephanie Bahr raised her sails and took a few members for a spin, while others relaxed on shore, and everyone had a great time as the sun set over the water.

5 So what do you do if you have a sense for adventure and a 911 with 118,000 miles on it? You mount a couple mountain bikes on top and drive it to Utah - of course! That’s exactly what my son, Connor, and I did. First of all, we love road trips. And we love road trips in the 911. This car has kicked up sand on the beach at Daytona, sat in the Porsche Platz during the 12 hours of Sebring, trav- eled to the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, rode the Tail of the Dragon, and faithfully motored through countless other adventures - not to men- tion countless hot laps around the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. But this road trip was going to be epic. First, we had to figure out how to attach a couple of large mountain bikes to the roof. Fortunately, Yakima makes a great system that fits the car per- fectly. Of course we road tested it and I’m happy to say the bikes remained firmly attached even at 1.1 lateral G’s and “highway plus” speeds. The plan was to drive directly to Denver by way of I-70 and I-40 over the mountains on the other side of Denver is mostly spend the night. The next day we would get up and make two-lane road – and it is awesome! The road out to the flats from the highway ends in a cul-de-sac with nothing but a sign identifying it as a national park and the “Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway”. We arrived on a Friday morning and a group was conducting motorcycle speed runs out on the “speedway” portion of the flats. But this still left a whole lot of open salt for us to go out and play on. The salt was hard and felt a little like rough asphalt, so getting up to speed was fairly easy. The problem is a complete lack of visual references except for the mountains way off in the distance, which makes going fast a little unnerving. Imagine driving really fast on a giant sheet of white paper with no lines to follow. The best we could manage was a little over 120mph before we chickened-out. But it was an experience like no other and the 911 handled the salt like a champ, never putting a wheel wrong. The drive home was long but uneventful, and we once again saw some incredible scenery. Throughout the entire trip, the Porsche performed flawlessly. With a trip total of 4,771 miles, we put more miles on the 911 than a lot of people do in a year. I wouldn’t hesitate to fire up that flat six and make the trip again tomorrow. On the last leg we were already planning our next road trip. We’re thinking it’s about time we do Cannonball Run - in the 911, of course. You already know that Porsches are engineered to be some of the best driving cars ever made, regardless of conditions. Regular main- tenance is key, but a high-mile Porsche is still a Porsche and will keep you smiling for many, many miles - so get out there and drive it! I will see you on “Die Offene Strasse” ... and at the track ... and the Region of the Year Party! Chip
