Baseball Catawba Blake Alex Ketner Chris Fairweather Ahearn 2009 Tim Kevin McMillan Holmes Ryan Query JIM GANTT Head Coach Jim Gantt enters his thirteenth season as head coach of the Catawba College baseball program. Under Gantt, Catawba has posted ten 30+ win seasons and an overall mark of 403-232. Gantt was honored as South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth time in 2008. Last sea- son, the Indians earned a SAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA II South Region Championship game, posting a 43-18 mark. He was named the 2006 SAC Coach of the Year after the Tribe went 47-14. Catawba won both the SAC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA II South Region Champion- ship game.The Indians were ranked as high as #2 in the nation. Gantt also earned SAC Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after guiding the Indians to a then school record 42 wins, including its first-ever berth in the NCAA II Regionals. In 2005, Catawba won the SAC title and went 35-19. The 1997 squad, his first as head coach, equaled a then second most win total with 32. Gantt also led the Indians to the 2002 SAC Tournament title and was named SAC Coach of the Year for the first time in 1999. As an assistant for seven seasons, Gantt was a key part of Catawba’s five straight seasons with at least 27 wins from 1991-95). The Indians won back-to-back South Atlantic Conference championships in 1992-93 and was a perfect 21-0 in league games in 1992 (38-7 overall). He has also served for the past two seasons as the coach of Rowan County’s successful American Legion team. Gantt was named the North Carolina Amateur Coach of the Year in 2002 after guiding Rowan to a 43-2 record and a state championship. As an assistant, he helped the legion team to the 1996 Southeast Regional Championship, advancing to the World Series in Roseburg, Oregon. Gantt, who graduated from Catawba in May 1989, with a bachelor’s degree in sports management, had an outstanding four-year career as a player for the Indians. He compiled a .297 career batting average. A third baseman, Gantt enjoyed his best season in 1988, as the Indians went 27-8 and won the Carolinas Conference championship. He was named to the all- conference team after hitting .322, with a .482 on- base percentage. Always a good contact hitter,Gantt struck out only 28 times in 330 career at-bats,while walking 47 times. He started 97 of 105 games, compiling 98 hits and 42 RBI. An all-conference player at Newton-Conover (N.C.) High School before graduating in 1984, Gantt was a .439 career hitter for the Red Devils. Gantt resides in Salisbury with his wife, Adrian. Adrian is the Catawba head field hockey coach. As an assistant at Wharton,he helped lead them to a state playoff appearance in only their second season of existence. Sawyer resides in Salisbury. MICHAEL LOWMAN Assistant Coach Michael Lowman will be in his fourth year as an assis- tant for the Catawba baseball team, returning after a stint as an assistant at High Point. Lowman previously served as an assistant with the Tribe from 2005-07. Lowman graduated from High Point in 2002 with a degree in sports management and received a Master of Science degree in sports studies from High Point in 2004. He served as a graduate assistant for two seasons with the Panthers while pursuing his masters. A four-year starter at High Point, Lowman earned first team All-Big South honors at second base in 2001. He was a two-time all-conference performer at East Rowan High School and helped Rowan County to the 1996 American Legion World Series. In 1998, Lowman was named the Area III Player of the Year after hitting .392 with 12 home runs and 70 RBI. Price had the right to opt out of the final four years and $127 million of the record-setting seven-year, $217 million deal he signed with the Red Sox after the 2015 season by midnight on Wednesday. However, as he basked in the afterglow of his first World Series title, the lefthander said that he would not leave the Red Sox. “I’m opting in. I’m not going anywhere. I want to win here. We did that this year and I want to do it again,” Price said minutes before boarding a duck boat. “There wasn’t any reconsideration on my part ever. I came here to win. We did that this year and that was very special, and now I want to do it again.” Red Sox principal owner (and Globe owner) John Henry was pleased with the decision. While industry opinion was nearly unanimous that Price wouldn’t have been able to make as much money on the open market as he will over the duration of his Red Sox deal, Henry said that the team wasn’t certain of the pitcher’s decision until he informed the club. “[Boston is] a tough town in many ways. Woods Associate Professor Graduate Student Idaho State University Idaho State University [email protected] [email protected] Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 12 (2021): How Scansis Functions On January 13, 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner, Robert D. Manfred Jr., released investigation findings confirming that the Houston Astros illegally used a video camera system to electronically steal signs during the 2017 regular season and postseason, in which they won the World Series, and early in the 2018 regular season. The findings exposed what has been referred to as “one of the biggest scandals in Major League Baseball history.”1 MLB eventually fined the organization $5 million and the Astros were forced to forfeit their first and second round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. The team’s owner, Jim Crane, also fired the general manager, Jeff Luhnow, and manager, A. J. Hinch. In this paper we analyze Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros organizational rhetoric and crisis response efforts after the organization was found guilty of cheating. Analysis spans from the beginning of the crisis on November 12, 2019 through March 12, 2020 and items analyzed include two Houston Astro press conferences and news stories published across 20 media outlets. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

With the approval of a $1,700.00 grant from the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission with which to purchase a lasting monument to the "Old Time" miners of Stockton, the wheels were set in motion. Recalling the many names of the miners, whose names were to be placed on the monument, it soon became apparent that many names long associated with the growth and the history of Stockton, were not miners, but ranchers, store keepers, stage drivers, etc.
