After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.” (ESV) “Water to Wine” It is important because … It Is Jesus’ First Miracle “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory” (2:11) Phrase 1 • “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (Jn 2:4) – Woman (gynē) • A polite form of address. Much like “Ma’am.” • Used again by Jesus in John 19:26 when John and Mary are at the foot of the cross. “Water to Wine” Phrase 2 • “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (Jn 2:4) – Literally, “What is this to you and me? • A common idiom. Best understood as a rhetorical question: “What should we do about this, Ma’am?” “Water to Wine” Phrase 3 • “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (Jn 2:4) – Hour (hōra) • When Jesus uses this phrase in John, it refers to his death on the cross.
