“Water to Wine” It is important because … It Is Jesus’ First Miracle

“This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory” (2:11) Phrase 1 • “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (Jn 2:4) – Woman (gynē) • A polite form of address. Much like “Ma’am.” • Used again by Jesus in John 19:26 when John and Mary are at the foot of the cross.

“Water to Wine” Phrase 2 • “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (Jn 2:4)

– Literally, “What is this to you and me? • A common idiom. Best understood as a rhetorical question: “What should we do about this, Ma’am?”

“Water to Wine” Phrase 3 • “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (Jn 2:4) – Hour (hōra) • When Jesus uses this phrase in John, it refers to his death on the cross. (2:4; 7:30; 8:20; 12:23, 27; 13:1; 17:1) –“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” (12:23) –“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, the hour has come; glorify your Son . . .” (17:1)

“They have no wine” (2:3) Above and Beyond • Not just the quality of the miracle (the best) • Also the quantity of the miracle

“Water to Wine” How Jesus Operates • Water to Wine—“Six stone water jars … holding twenty or thirty gallons … filled to the brim” (Jn 2:2-6) • Feeding of the 5,000—“And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over” (Mt 14:21) • Miraculous catch of fish—“And their nets were breaking … and they filled both boats, so that they began to sink” (Lk 5:6-7) • Abundant life—“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10)

“There were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification” (2:6) Signs of the Messianic Era
