Kiedis and his colleagues were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Kiedis spent his youth in Grand Rapids, Michigan with his mother, and then moved shortly before his twelfth birthday to live with his father in Hollywood. While at Fairfax High School, Kiedis befriended students Michael Balzari (later known as Bloch) and Hillel Slovak, who were members of a group called Anthym. After graduating from high school, Kiedis began taking lessons at UCLA, but dropped out of his sophomore year. When Kiedis received an offer to become an opening for a local band, he recruited Bloch, Slovak and drummer Jack Eyrose. After a show called Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, the band progressed, and the line-up eventually became the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has recorded eleven studio albums with Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kiedis' lyrical style has evolved throughout his career; early entries discussed topics such as sex and life in Los Angeles, while later songs focused on more reflexive topics, including love, addiction and loss. His vocal style has shifted from rap to more traditional singing. He struggled with drug addiction until 2000, and has remained drug-free ever since. Early life Kiedis was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Margaret Peggy Noble and struggling actor John Michael Kiedis, known professionally as Blackie Dummett. His paternal grandfather's family emigrated from Lithuania in the early 1900s; his other ancestors include Irish, English, French and Dutch. In 1966, when Kidis was three years old, his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother in Grand Rapids. His mother later remarried and had two more children. Every summer, Kiedis was introduced to his father in Hollywood for two weeks, during which they were tied up. He idolized his father and recalled, These trips to California were the happiest, happiest, most beautiful oysters I have ever experienced. In 1974, when Kidis was 12 years old, he moved to Hollywood to live with his father full-time. Kiedis' father sold drugs that affected Kiedis because they often used marijuana and cocaine Kiedis accidentally tried for the first time at the age of 14, mistaking him for cocaine. Thanks to his father, Kidis, who worked under the stage name Cole Dummett, he got his first acting role as the son of sylvester Stallone's character in the 1978 film F.I.S.T. He landed two more acting jobs, in the ABC Afterschool Special and appearance in the movie Jokes My People Never Told Me. However, he soon met his future bandmate Bloch, and after a brief confrontation they became best friends and connected with each other, sitting next to each other in the driver's class. We became almost inseparable. We were both social outcasts. We found each other, and it turned out to be the longest friendship of my life. Kiedis had a significant influence on Bloch, exposing him to rock music, especially punk rock. At the age of 15, when Kiedis and were jumping from the building into the pool, Kiedis missed the pool and broke his back, but recovered. At the age of 15, Kiedis met his future bandmate Hillel Slovak after seeing him perform with his band Anthym. After the show, the Slovak invited Kiedis to his home for a snack. Kiedis later described this experience: Within minutes of hanging out with Hillel, I felt that it was completely different from most people I spent time with... He understood a lot in music, he was a great visual artist, and he had a sense of self and calmness towards him, which was just exciting. Slovak, Kiedis and Bloch often used LSD, heroin, cocaine and speed in recreational areas. Kiedis excelled at school, often receiving direct grades A. In June 1980, Kiedis graduated with honors from high school. In August of that year, he enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles to study writing. After Kiedis began working with Bloch and drummer Jack Eyroules, he was described as a man of ceremonies before he began singing for the band. The Ayrrons and the Slovak began playing together in high school, performing in a band called Chain Reaction. The band included bassist Tom Strasman and Chilean-born vocalist Alain Johannes. When Strasman became a lawyer, he left the group to maintain his grades and focus on college. At this point, Flea was brought into the mix. Shortly after meeting with the band and participating in several shows, Kidis was offered a position in the band from Flea. He started out as an advertising man, leaving in front of a group blurring jokes for the audience and getting them pumped. Red Hot Chili Peppers 1983-1984: Formation and the first album by Kiedis, performing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Philadelphia in 1983, and Bloch began to create his own music after finding inspiration in a punk-funk fusion band called Defunkt. Kiedis rejected the violence and misogyny associated with the Los Angeles punk rock scene at the time, and wanted to create a more peaceful environment that encouraged women to come to concerts. They formed a band with former Anthym drummer Jack Ayr, tony Flow and The Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. The band had only one song called Out in L.A. and was formed to play the song once. The song was based on a guitar riff that the Slovak wrote while jamming with the Irons, and wasn't supposed to be a real song until Kiedis decided to rap over the music. Mike Chester, a friend of Kiedis, invited the band to open up for their act Mike and Neighbor's Voices at The Rhythm Lounge, as he felt that Kiedis had potential as a frontman. Slovaks and Bloch were initially skeptical, and felt that Kidis lacked vocal experience, but they eventually agreed to perform. Kiedis later described the play: All the anticipation of the moment struck me, and I instinctively knew that the miracle of manipulating energy and using an infinite source of power and using it in a small space with friends was what I was put on this earth to do. After the band's first show in The Rhythm Lounge, the bar owner asked them to come back, but with two songs instead of one. After several shows, and the addition of several songs to their repertoire, the band's name was changed to Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band's concert repertoire grew to ten songs as a result of months of games in local nightclubs and bars. During a performance at a strip club in Hollywood called Kit Kat Club, the band members performed in socks on penises, the idea was formed by Kiedis. This has gained notoriety from the group, and the club owners have even started booking the band on the condition that they perform in this way. The Red Hot Chili Peppers entered Bijou Studios to record a demo tape and then signed a contract with EMI. Irons and Slovak, however, decided to leave Red Hot Chili Peppers to pursue a more serious future with their band Anthym, which by this time had been renamed What Is This? Kiedis ultimately respected the decision, but felt the group would be lost without them. Kiedis and Bloch hired drummer Cliff Martinez of The Weirdos and guitarist Jack Sherman to fill Iron's and Slovak's seats, respectively. Andy Gill, formerly of Gang of Four, agreed to release his first album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1984. Jill and Sherman clashed with Kiedis and Bloch; they were constantly arguing about the musical style, sound and production of the album. Sherman was fired from the band after the tour and replaced by a return 1985-1988: Freaky Styley, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and the death of Slovak funk musician George Clinton were hired to produce the band's second album, Freaky Styley, when the Slovak returned to guitar. The strong chemistry between Clinton and Chili Peppers was felt instantly. Freaky Styley was released in August 1985. It received only a little more attention than the Red Hot Chili Peppers with approximately 75,000 copies sold by the end of the year. The band hired Michael Beinhorn, their last resort among potential producers, to work on their next album. What's it? finally broke up, and Ayres returned to the Chili Peppers in mid-1986 after Martinez's dismissal. Flea, Slovak and Kiedis were particularly involved in heavy drug use, and their relationship became strained. Flea recalled that it began to seem ugly to me, not fun; our communication was not healthy. Kiedis became addicted to heroin, leaving Bloch and Slovak to work on much of the album's material on their own. Both Kiedis and the Slovak struggled with a debilitating heroin addiction that got worse as the band prepared to record the Uplift Mofo Party Plan. Because of his addiction, Kiedis lacked the motivation to contribute to the band musically, and appeared at rehearsals literally asleep. He was asked to leave the group to undergo drug rehabilitation. During this time, the band won the LA Weekly Band of the Year award, prompting Kiedis to stop using cold turkey heroin. He visited his mother in Michigan for a guide who took him to drug rehab right after picking him up from the airport after seeing his unhealthy appearance. Kiedis checked into the Salvation Army Rehabilitation Clinic in Grand Rapids, an experience he didn't first check until he noticed that other people at the clinic understood his struggle and were trying to help him. He moved in with his mother after twenty days at the clinic, a time that marked the first time he had been completely abstaining from drugs since he was eleven years old. After Kiedis completed his rehabilitation, he felt a whole new wave of enthusiasm because of his sobriety and wrote the lyrics of a new song called Fight Like a Brave on his flight home. He returned to the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Los Angeles to record an album. When he returned home, he began dating actress Ion Skye, whom Bloch met when she appeared in the 1987 sci-fi film Stranded. Although Kiedis had recently become clean, his withdrawal symptoms intensified and affected his musical contribution to the band. After fifty days of sobriety, Kiedis decided to take drugs again as a one-off attempt to celebrate his new music, which led to his resumption of addiction. The process of recording the album became difficult, as Kiedis often disappeared into the Drug. Produced by Michael Beinhorn Beinhorn that were the points in the pre-production where I really thought the record wasn't going to get made. Kiedis felt excruciating pain, guilt and shame when he skipped the recording to try to write lyrics in search of drugs; although the band members were upset with his drug use and frequent disappearances, they were impressed by his musical output at the time. After an international tour in support of Uplift, the Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988. After the death of the Slovak Kiedis fled to a small fishing village in Mexico and did not attend his funeral, considering the situation surreal and fabulous. Although he discovered that the death was a shock, he was not scared straight at first and continued to use heroin. A few weeks later, his friend persuaded him to go through rehab and visit the Slovak grave, which inspired him to clean up. Irons could not cope with the Slovak's death and subsequently left the band, saying he did not want to be part of something that led to his friend's death. Kiedis and Bloch decided to continue making music, hoping to continue what the Slovak helped build. After the death of Slovak Kidis and Bloch took some time to get together, but they decided to keep the group together. Guitarist DeWayne Blackbyrd McKnight and drummer D.H. Peilygro were added instead of Slovak and Ayron. McKnight soon began to create tension in the band, as his style did not mesh with the rest of the group. Pelicro, a former drummer for punk rock band Dead Kennedys, was a friend of , an 18-year-old guitarist and avid Red Hot Chili Peppers fan. Pelicro introduced Frusciante to Flea, and the three got stuck together several times. Kiedis was impressed by Frusciante's skill and impressed with the knowledge of the Chili Peppers repertoire. McKnight was fired, and Frusciante accepted an invitation to join the group. The band began writing music for their next album and finished 1988 with a brief tour. Pelicro was fired in November and through auditions, Chili Peppers brought in drummer Chad Smith as his replacement soon after. 1989-1993: Mother's Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik and the main success of The Chili Peppers entered the studio, and completed recording of their fourth album, Mother's Milk, in early 1989. After its release, the album was met with mixed reactions from critics, but received much more commercial attention, peaking at number 52 on the Billboard 200. Although his group was more successful, Kiedis's withdrawal symptoms had a negative impact on his personal life. This led to the end of his two-year relationship with Jonah Skye in December 1989: I managed to stay sober without straining drugs, so my body healed from all this excruciating activity, but my mind still wasn't healthy enough to of all the problems that arise in a relationship. In 1990, Kiedis was convicted of indecent exposure and sexual battery in Virginia related to an incident at George Mason University in Fairfax County in April 1989. He was ordered to pay a fine on both counts. Kiedis and Flea, performing in Amsterdam, August 1989, the band sought to record their next album Blood Sugar Sex Magik in an unconventional setting, believing that it would enhance their creative performance. The band's producer Rick Rubin suggested that the mansion once had a magician Harry Houdini, to which they agreed. A film crew was hired to operate a recording studio and other equipment needed for production in the house. The band decided that they would stay in the mansion for the duration of the recording, although Smith, convinced that the place was haunted, refused to stay. At this stage, Kiedis began to write about suffering and the self-harming thoughts he would experience because of heroin and cocaine addiction. Chili Peppers producer Rick Rubin came across one of Kidis' poems, which would be the lyrics to Under the Bridge, and invited Keidis to show it to the rest of the band. Kiedis was apprehensive because he thought the lyrics were too soft and different from the band's style. After singing Frusciante's verse, they began to structure the song the next day. They worked for hours, arranging chords and melodies until they both agreed that it was complete. The song later became a major hit, peaking at number two on the Billboard 100. When Blood Sugar Sex Magik was released on September 24, 1991, it received an overwhelmingly positive critical response. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 200, and has sold more than seven million copies in the United States alone. The subsequent tour of the album was praised by critics - Chili Peppers usually performed with more than twenty thousand viewers. Up-and-coming bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins also toured with them during their US tour. The massive attention that Chili Peppers began to receive made Frusciante feel extremely uncomfortable, and he suddenly left the band during a Japanese tour. The band hired guitarist Arik Marshall to complete the remaining tour dates. The band appeared live at the Grammy Awards with George Clinton's band P-Funk and many others performing a medley that included Give It Away. 1994-1997: One hot minute of months passed, and only a small amount of material was written by presenter Chad Smith to publicly announce that Kiedis was suffering from the writer's block (something Kiedis denied). The rest of the recording was completed within the following month, and their sixth album One Hot Minute was released in September 1995 with the band's new guitarist Dave Navarro. The album was mixed reviews and was a major departure from the band's funk-punk sound. The tour in support of the album was also met with mixed results. Chad Smith broke his arm before the start of the U.S. tour in 1995, so it was postponed until early 1996. Towards the end of the tour, Kiedis had a motorcycle accident that left him with a broken arm. The tour ended with the group's final set interrupted due to a powerful typhoon. 1997 was named the band's year of nothing. 1998-2010: Californication, By the Way and Stadium Arcadium Kiedis, performing in 2006, the band regrouped in 1998 to begin writing for their seventh studio album; however, Navarro is currently struggling with his own drug problems. This caused serious tension between Kiedis and Navarro, who was dismissed from the group in early 1998. Bloch told Kiedis that he believed the only way to continue the band was if Frusciante rejoined the group. In the years following Frusciante's departure from chili Peppers, he developed a vicious addiction to both heroin and cocaine, which left him in poverty and almost dying. In January 1998, he was persuaded to confess to drug rehabilitation. In April 1998, after a three-month completion of Frusciante, Flea visited his former bandmate and openly invited him to return to the group, an invitation to Frusciante readily accepted. Within a week, and for the first time in six years, the foursome gathered to play and jump-start the newly reunited Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band released Californication on June 8, 1999. Immediately after the release of Californication, the band embarked on a world tour in support of the recording, starting with the United States. The culmination of the American leg of their tour, the Chili Peppers was asked to shut down Woodstock '99, which became infamous for the violence that led to it. Kiedis felt that it was clear that this situation no longer had anything to do with Woodstock. It was not a symbol of peace and love, but greed and cashing in ... We woke up with papers and radio stations denigrating us for playing Fire. Writing and forming By the Way began immediately after the climax of The Californication' world tour in the spring of 2001. As with Californication, much of the creation took place in the homes of band members, as well as in other practice places such as the recording studio scene. Kiedis recalled the situation: We began to find magic, music, riffs and rhythms and some jams and some grooves and we added to it and subtracted from it and pushed it around and put the tunes to it. Frusciante and Kiedis collaborated for days on end, discussing guitar progressions and sharing lyrics. For Kiedis, letter by the way... was a completely different impression of Californication. John is back to himself and brimming with confidence. The album marked a change in the band's sound, and Kiedis began writing songs reflecting his romantic relationships and addiction. The formation and recording of the Arcadium Stadium took place at the Mansion, the former home of Harry Houdini, where the Chili Peppers recorded their 1991 breakthrough blood sugar Sex Magik. Kiedis noted that during the recording of the album everyone was in a good mood. There was very little tension, very little anxiety, very little weirdness going on, and every day we showed up in this funky room in the valley and everyone felt more comfortable than ever in their ideas. The album was released on May 9, 2006. After a hugely successful world tour in support of Stadium Arcadium, the band decided to take a long annual break in music in 2008. According to Kiedis, the collective decision was made not to do anything that has been associated with the Red Hot Chili Peppers for at least one year. [...] We started in 1999, with writing and recording Californication, and we didn't really stop until the tour ended last year. We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of this run. During the break, Frusciante left the band amicably in July 2009 (although it was not publicly announced until December 2009). , a Chili Peppers touring guitarist and frequent collaborator with Frusciante, was hired as his replacement. 2011-present: I'm with you, rock and roll Hall of Fame Induction, Health Scare and Getaway Kiedis in 2011 august 26, 2011, Red Hot Chili Peppers released their tenth album, I'm With You. On December 7, 2011, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Kiedis said it was very emotional, and the first person he said was his father, who cried when he heard the news. On January 11, 2012, the Chili Peppers announced that they had been forced to postpone their I'm with You tour due to numerous leg injuries sustained by Kiedis. Kiedis has been battling a foot injury since 2006, when he injured his leg on stage and was finally able to have surgery during a break from the group tour in January 2012. During the operation, Kidis was removed from the shredded sesame bone and repaired the free-standing flexor tendon. The band was able to resume its tour and started from the American stage on March 29, 2012. The tour in support of I'm With You ended in April 2013, and the band continued touring in that included a break with Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl in February 2014. In November 2014, Kiedis embarked on a mini-tour to promote Chili Peppers, Fandemonium. This included signing a book, WA and appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where Kiedis sat throughout the show with The Roots performing Chili Peppers songs. Kiedis receives the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement presented at UCLA's Spring Sing on May 16, 2015. Kiedis' mother, Peggy Noble, commented on her son's award, saying: It really makes me proud. Both my parents and Grandpa Eden were huge fans of Gershwin. I grew up with their music. After his onstage speech, Kidis was joined by his Chili Peppers bandmate Josh Klinghoffer for an acoustic performance of Otherside, a cover of If You Want Me to Stay and By the Way. On May 14, 2016, the band was forced to cancel their headlinedish slot at KRO' Weenie Roast's annual show, as Kiedis was taken to the hospital before the band appeared on stage. It has been confirmed that Kiedis suffers from intestinal influenza and is expected to make a full recovery; However, the band was forced to postpone the screening of their pre-show with the album iHeartRadio on May 17, 2016 (transfer to May 26). Kiedis and Chili Peppers return to the stage on May 22, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada on May 20, 2016, his first since his release from the hospital, Kiedis said that his illness was caused by inflammation in the intestines, which he said was complicated by a recent stomach virus and existing scar tissue from previous hernia surgeries that required his stomach to be transferred to the hospital. During a break in filming The Late Late Show with James Corden's carpool karaoke segment, which aired June 14, 2016 and featured the band singing karaoke to their music with the host while driving through Los Angeles, Kiedis performed an emergency checkpoint on the baby. A woman came out of the house holding a child, saying: My child, my child, my child, my child can't breathe! Kiedis said. This woman shoved the baby in my arms, the baby wasn't breathing, and I thought: I'm going to try to do a little baby CPR very quickly, see if I can get air in this baby. So I started rubbing my stomach, the bubbles came out of my mouth, my eyes rolled back to the scene, an ambulance arrived, and I handed over the baby who is now breathing and fine, and we returned to Carpool Karaoke. On June 17, 2016, The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their eleventh studio album, The Getaway. On July 13, 2016, Kiedis appeared on the TV show Garage Jay Leno. On October 20, 2018, Kiedis, who attended the Los Angeles Lakers' game against Flea, was expelled from the game for and flipping Chris Paul of the Houston Rockets. In December 2019, the Red Hot Chili Peppers announced that guitarist John Frusciante would return to replace Josh Klinghoffer. Other projects using the stage name Cole Dummett (adapted from the stage name of his father, Blackie Dummett), Kiedis landed a number of small roles on television and in film as a teenager in the late 1970s. His early credits include F.I.S.T. and 1978 ABC Afterschool Special It's Mile from Here to Glory. Resuming his acting career in the 1990s, Kiedis played a bully surfer named Ton in the 1991 film Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze's Point Break. Chase, the 1994 film starring Charlie Sheen as an estranged man trying to escape the cops with a young woman he kidnapped, was Bloch and Kiedis plays metalheads who chase Sheen's character in a four-× 4 truck and eventually crashing. Kiedis also organized the New American Music Union, a two-day summer music festival to be held in August 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He put together a list of musicians including Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, The Roots and the second stage featuring student bands. (The lineup did not include the Kiedis or the Red Hot Chili Peppers.) In 2011, Kiedis and his son Everly starred in the documentary Bob and the Beast. The documentary details the life and career of musician and drug consultant, . On May 11, 2011, Anthony donated the MTV European Music Award, which the band had previously won, to help raise funds for ongoing assistance in devastated areas of Japan, which was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Kiedis and Flea were executive producers of the 2014 film Low Down, which is based on the life of jazz pianist Joe Albany. In June 2015, Kiedis and his son Everly Bear, as well as Cher and Willow Smith, became the new faces of Marc Jacobs Fall's 2015 advertising campaign. In February 2016, chili Peppers performed at a Feel the Bern fundraiser in support of Bernie Sanders. On January 11, 2019, Kiedis co-authored a Rolling Stone opinion paper with Rory Kennedy, director and daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, and Trevor Neilson of the Malibu Foundation, in which he listed the human, financial and environmental costs of global climate conditions. Kiedis said: As our federal government lets us down, we must rely on our state and local governments to lead the charge. Three days later, Kiedis and Chili Peppers performed at a charity for the victims of the Wolsey fire in California. The fires destroyed more than 1,500 homes, killed four people, and forced Kiedis, his family and gang members to flee their homes. The band's twelfth album was also taken away due to deadly fires. Drummer Chad Smith said: Me and Anthony live in Point Doom. Seventy Seventy our neighborhood burned down. Ours were spared, thankfully. The personal life of the Family and the relationship of Kiedis' father, Blackie Dummett, is an actor who has appeared in more than 50 films and television shows. Dammett's autobiography, The Lord of the Sunset Strip, was released on March 31, 2013. Through Dummett, Kiedis also has a much younger half- brother. During the Chili Peppers show on June 25, 2017 in Grand Rapids, Kiedis dedicated Soul to Squeeze to his dementia-suffering father. Kiedis' godfather was Sonny Bono. As a child, Kiedis' father was a close friend of Bono and his then-wife Cher, who is the nanny of Kiedis. Kiedis has a son named Everly Bear, born October 2, 2007, from a relationship with model Heather Christie that lasted from 2004 to 2008. Christie, who was 18 when they started dating ,Kidis was 41, was the inspiration for his lyrics on the band's 2006 album Stadium Arcadium. Songs such as She's Only 18 and Desecration Smile were written directly about Christie. In March 2018, Kiedis and Christie were involved in the battle for Everly. Like Christie, many of Kiedis's previous relationships inspired his music. In 1990, Kiedis had a brief relationship with singer Sinead O'Connor, who inspired him to write I Could Have Lied in 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik. A short cast with Spice Girls singer Melanie Sporty Spice Chisholm inspired the Emit Remmus from 1999 to Californication, his band also embracing their song Wannabe at a 1997 concert in Japan. His relationship with Johanna Logan, whom Kiedis dated from 1998-2003, was a positive inspiration for Californication-era songs such as outtake Fat Dance, while their breakup inspired the 2002 album By the Way and many lyrics. Kiedis's failed two-year relationship with Australian model Helena Westergaard, who was 19 when they started dating in 2012 (he was 50), had a big impact on his songwriting for the band's 2016 album The Getaway: Lyrically, I'm ashamed to say, but the two-year relationship, which completely fell apart like a nuclear bomb, just left me feeling pretty raw and emotional. So even though the relationship was a bit of a disaster, I feel like in some ways I got something out of it that was about half the songs on that record, Kiedis said. In an interview in June 2016, Kiedis spoke about his past relationships, saying that there were years when he had more than 100 sexual partners. Kiedis added: If I saw a pretty girl, I would have liked to have her. When asked about marriage and getting old and alone, Kiedis replied: Maybe it's because I've never learned to live in a relationship and as stupid as it sounds, I don't understand women yet. They remain a mystery. I talked about it. with a friend: we are focused on finding a search the person who comes with us, or will we remain alone? I'm open to both. If the right one comes - great. If not, I accept that the universe is meant for me. Kiedis admitted raping the 14-year-old twice when he was 23, prompting him to write the song Catholic School Rule for Girls. Kiedis has struggled with drug addiction, including heroin and cocaine, throughout his life. Since his father was a drug addict, Kiedis was constantly exposed to drug use and drug trafficking when he was growing up. Some of Kidis' early drugs came from substances he received from his father, including marijuana, which he first smoked when he was 12 years old. Kiedis used drugs for years, including during the formation of the group. A few years after the band's career began, he was briefly fired for heavy drug use. At times, things got so bad that he didn't show up for the band's performances. One night, after Kiedis missed a performance to score drugs, the band replaced him with singer Keith Morris. Kiedis tried to clean up after Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988, saying he would never shoot again. He went into rehab and eventually stayed clean for five years, but had a relapse in 1994, which caused a serious delay in the release of the band's 1995 album One Hot Minute. Kiedis continued to use and turn off for the next six years. The last major relapse of Kiedis occurred when the doctor prescribed Tramadol to him, despite the fact that Kiedis specifically requested not to prescribe opiates. For convalescent heroin addicts, synthetic opiates will have a strong craving. He reportedly avoided another relapse on 24 December 2000. In May 2012, after more than 20 years of speculation, Vulture claimed that the place where Kiedis would buy and use drugs (which inspired Under the Bridge) was located in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, California, based on evidence from Kiedis' memoirs. In 2014, LA Weekly strongly argued that vulture's conclusion was wrong. Feuding with Mike Patton for more than 30 years, Kiedis and Faith No More/Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton have been embroiled in an ongoing feud. Before this feud, Faith No More (then in front of Chuck Mosley) and The Red Hot Chili Peppers toured together. However, things turned ugly between the two bands in 1989 when Kiedis accused Mosley's replacement, Patton, of imitating his style on stage and in their music video for their biggest hit, Epic. They shot each other in the media throughout 1990. It was believed that in the following years the relationship improved, and in Kiedis and Patton came face to face, which were described as friendly. The feud between the two was unexpectedly unexpected in 1999. Mr. Bungle was supposed to release his California album on June 8, 1999, but Warner Bros. Records postponed the release by a week so as not to coincide with the same title of Chili Peppers' album, Californication. After hitting the album's release date, Mr. Bungle claimed that Kiedis had removed them from a series of summer festivals in Europe. Mr. Bangla's guitarist, Trey Sprouans, added that Chili Peppers' manager apologized and accused Kiedis of removing him. In retaliation, Mr. Bungle parodied the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Pontiac, Michigan, for Halloween 1999. They covered several of the band's songs, with Patton intentionally using the wrong lyrics, such as Sometimes I Feel Like a Fucking Junkie on Under the Bridge. In the middle of the concert, bassist Trevor Dunn (dressed as Bloch) approached guitarist Spruans (dressed as the ghost of Hillel Slovak) and simulated an injection of heroin. Patton (dressed as Kiedis) interrupted it with a cry: You can't shoot a ghost. In response, Kiedis withdrew them from the 2000 Big Day Out festival in Australia and New York. Kiedis said of the festival show: I wouldn't give two fucks if they played there with us. But after I heard about the Halloween show where they were mocking us, they fucked him and fucked the whole group. Mr Bungle stopped being active a year after a dispute with Kiedis. Patton continued to mock Kiedis in the media with his new band Fantemas, calling him a noodle in a 2001 television interview. Several publications, such as Complex and Phoenix New Times, have since listed Kiedis-Patton's feud as one of the best beefs in rock history. Others called it funk metal feud and absurd. In August 2016, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld injected into the feud, calling Faith No More the greatest band in the universe and shooting at Chili Peppers and Kiedis after Bloch posted a video of him and gorilla Coco. Kiedis's artistic musical style at Rock im Park, Germany, 2016 While creating lyrics and melodies for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiedis drew inspiration from a variety of sources. His first musical memory was to hear Neil Young's Heart of Gold at the age of eleven: It moved me so much that I insisted my mother buy me 45. In high school, he was heavily influenced by the rap vocals of Grandmaster Flash and Messages of the Furious Five and in your face sexual lyrics of Prince's song Mind Dirty. Kiedis writes most of the red Hot Chili Peppers. Since the 1989 album Mother's Milk, John Frusciante and Bloch have written almost all the music (except for melodies) for Red Hot Chili Peppers, while Kiedis adds lyrics and melodies that he hears during instrumental jams Kiedis said in 2006: Somehow I find songs ... in the big thing they do. His lyrical style has changed over the years. In the early years of the band, Kiedis wrote many texts detailing his enjoyment of sex, drugs and life in Los Angeles. As his musical tastes expanded and his outlook on life changed, he began writing songs about a wider range of subjects. His texts include many of the same themes as those of Charles Bukowski, Kiedis's chief literary influence. His early vocal style with the band mostly consisted of rap, which led him to label as an influence on the rap-rock movement. At Mother's Milk (1989), Kiedis wrote more songs driven by melody rather than the main rhythm and rhythm-style funk. The first song in which Kiedis used his new melodic style was Knock Me Down. The melody was formed and performed by guitarist John Frusciante. Joining the band, Frusciante sang vocals on the song with Kiedis. Blood Sugar Sex Magik in 1991 still saw Kiedis' rap, but he also started singing in songs such as Under the Bridge, Breaking the Girl and I Could Have Lied. Over the years, Kiedis has grown in favor of singing over rap. Kiedis had a lot of vocal trainers, but none of them helped him sing good. In fact, it wasn't until 1999 that Californication that he felt he could take full control of his voice while singing. On October 6, 2004, Kiedis published a memoir called Scar Tissue, which he co-wrote with author Larry Sloman. The book was originally supposed to be a collection of stories about his child drug use, but turned into a full autobiography. He went on to explain: One could just assume that for all the drug use, my memory would be a bit cheesy. But it's actually pretty clear, and better than both of my parents, or any of my friends. My friends tried to tell these same stories and they were like, I don't... Were we there? The book became an international bestseller. In an interview in June 2016, Kiedis said he initially regretted writing Scar Tissue, saying, I regretted the book for a while because there was some pain - then I started to see a long-term positive. People read it in hospitals, prisons and schools, and it has a positive impact. I realized that the whole point of writing this book is not for me, but to show that someone can go all the way down and come all the way back and productive, successful happy interesting life. And so regardless of the shame, pain or hardship or discomfort I went through, it was worth it because I get so many people coming up to me saying that their kids read it and got them to act together because of it. Kiedis said that because of the subject in his book, especially his reflections on his sexual that he hoped his family had not read his book. I asked all members of my family not to read the book. Kiedis said. Potential television series Kiedis developed a series for HBO, based on his unconventional upbringing in Los Angeles. The show is expected to be loosely based on much of Kiedis's autobiography. He collaborated with Catapult 360 partners Mark Abrams and Michael Benson to create a series called Spider and Son. The series was at the center of Kiedis' relationship with his father, Blackie Dummett, who sold a lot of drugs and mingled with rock stars on the Sunset Strip in an effort to get into show business. The premiere of the play was to take place at the end of 2010. According to Blackie's Facebook page, John Sales' script for the pilot episode was broadcast by HBO on May 10, 2010. On October 14, 2011, it was announced that HBO was no longer interested in the series and that FX had taken the rights to air the series. John Sayles, who wrote the screenplay for the HBO pilot, is no longer involved in the project. Entourage producers Esther Dawson and Mike Chester will continue to produce the series and Kiedis will also co-produce the series along with Bram Sheldon. It is not known whether the series will continue to follow the relationship between Kiedis and his father Blackie or whether the entire autobiography will be the focus of the series. In 2013, Dummett briefly mentioned the status of the series, which will be based on both the biographies of Kiedis and Dummett, but said he was mothballed in the hope of resuming it after the Chili Peppers completed their tour in the same year.
