NEWPORT BEACH Overcast Clouds Humidity: 77%

Wind: 3.36 m/h 61.2°F Police Files MON TUE WED Former NBA star Dennis Rodman may be in trouble again with possible yoga studio theft A Newport Beach police investigation is underway concerning the alleged theft of some 61/61°F 61/63°F 61/62°F $1,000 worth of clothing from Vibes Hot Yoga in Newport Beach earlier this week. A store video shows a woman on Tuesday, May 7 stuffing clothes into her purse, while her friends allegedly attempt to distract store employees. One of those friends appears to be former NBA star Dennis Rodman, although Newport Beach Police have yet to positively confirm his identity. According to reports, the group of people also allegedly attempted to remove a crystal art piece from the front desk of the business, but ended up dropping and shattering it. The piece was valued at $2,500. They eventually left the yoga studio, even taking the shattered crystal with them. The owner of the studio claimed that the group reeked of alcohol. A note the next day was found taped to the front door of the studio that read, “We stopped by at 4:26. Thank you for letting us be ourselves! Looking forward to seeing you soon!” It was apparently signed by Rodman himself. No one has as of yet been arrested and the investigation continues. Rodman is presently on probation following a DUI conviction. Now ex-employee suspected of taking $32,000 from local business A business in the 2100 block of Westcliff Drive filed a crime report with Newport Beach Police saying that a now ex-employee took some $32,000 from a safe, without permission. The incident occurred sometime between 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 and 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18. The complaint was filed on Tuesday, May 9. Fire Files NB Fire knocks down Eastbluff home fire On Tuesday, May 7, the Newport Beach Fire Department made an aggressive attack on a one-story Eastbluff home fire. First in units reported a working garage fire.

Fair Game By TOM JOHNSON Mayor Diane Dixon sets her sights on 74th Assembly District seat in 2020 Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon announced this week that she’s planning to make a run against Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie- Norris for ’s 74th Assembly District in 2020. The 74th District serves Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, parts of Huntington Beach and Laguna Woods. “Local control, fiscal discipline, unfunded pension liabilities, protecting our harbor, beaches and bay, and public safety,” are what Diane believes to be the big issues she’ll run on. When I asked her about why now and why this office, she offered up this example: “As the Legislature tinkers around with whatever the Democrats’ cause du jour is, the really important issues are kicked down the road. The Democrats were able to pass a plastic straw ban in a heartbeat, but they have yet to address the huge unfunded pension liabilities that are sinking cities and counties up and down the state.” Lastly, no Newport Beach City Council member has ever advanced up to any higher elected office, so, what makes her different? “In the past, the Newport Beach City Council members have been Republicans running against other Republicans in the primary election. We now have a Democratic incumbent so the choice between policies in November 2020 will be stark.” Diane says that she is actively fundraising and expects “the opposition to bring in huge sums from outside contributors.” November 2020 might seem like a long way off, but I promise you, it’ll be here before you know it. • • • Did you know we celebrate National Public Gardens Week from May 9 through the 19th? Events, programs at Don’t tell them, but that’s more than a week. Anyway, Sherman Library & Gardens is celebrating the week, eh, week and a half, looking to add some new volunteers to their mix. OASIS Senior Center So, this Monday, May 13, from 10:30 a.m. until noon, you’re invited into their Tea Garden to find out more. They are even offering coffee and bagels to lure you in. Other current volunteers will be on hand to greet you as a guest, answer questions, let you know all the goings on and fun the place is having, and hopefully find a place to get you involved. Some opportunities where you can get involved are gardening, events, library and gift shop work, they even have book clubs, walking clubs and a “sowers” group that crafts for their Christmas Open House. So you can see, they’re a lot of ways to plug in. I say, go for the bagels, stay for the volunteer work. Fortunately, the police safely returned Elizabeth back to her family on March 12, 2003, after being held a prisoner for nine grueling months. Through this traumatic experience, Elizabeth has become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs, and national legislation.
