Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remark when addressing a meeting to commend the role models in the country's fight against COVID-19 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During the meeting, Xi presented the Medal of the Republic to renowned respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan, and the national honorary title "People's Hero" to Zhang Boli, a traditional Chinese medicine expert; Zhang Dingyu, head of Jinyintan Hospital in Wuhan, Hubei province; and Chen Wei, a military biomedical expert, for their outstanding contributions to the country's fight against COVID-19. Xi said the great anti-epidemic effort has demonstrated that building a community with a shared future for mankind is the right way to prevail over the common challenges facing humanity and to build a more prosperous and better world. He reviewed nationwide efforts in combating the unprecedented public health crisis as well as China's cooperation with the rest of the world in fighting the pandemic. He also praised those who have made sacrifices and contributions to the country's achievements in epidemic control, and the foreign countries and international organizations that offered assistance and support to China during the difficult time. Despite the tremendous pressure in domestic epidemic control, Xi said China has offered assistance to the international community to the best of its ability in fighting the pandemic. China has donated funds totaling $50 million to the World Health Organization, sent 34 medical expert teams to 32 countries and provided assistance to 150 countries and four international organizations. "With concrete actions, China has helped save a great number of lives from COVID-19 around the world," Xi said. As the pandemic is still raging globally, Xi said China will continue to enhance international cooperation in epidemic control, support the WHO playing a leading role in the global fight against the disease, share anti-epidemic and treatment experience with other nations, and provide aid to countries and regions with poor capabilities to deal with the pandemic. During his speech, Xi summarized China's spirit of combating the outbreak, which features putting people's lives first, nationwide solidarity, sacrifice, respecting science, and a sense of mission for humanity. In the fight against the epidemic, people's lives have always been put first and foremost, Xi said, adding that China is willing to do whatever it takes to protect people's lives. Noting that strong Party leadership is the most reliable support for the Chinese people in times of trouble, Xi said the fight against the epidemic has also demonstrated that socialism with Chinese characteristics is the fundamental guarantee for resisting risks and challenges and improving the capacity for national governance. He noted that the Chinese economy is steadily turning for the better as the country has coordinated epidemic control with economic growth. "China has become the first major economy to return to growth during the COVID-19 pandemic and has taken the lead in the world in both epidemic control and economic recovery," Xi said. "This has demonstrated China's strong ability to recover and its enormous vitality." China will continue to advance economic globalization, firmly uphold the multilateral trading system, ensure the stability of global industrial and supply chains, and work with the international community to help the world economy recover, he said. Asian Medicine 16 (2021) 36–57 brill.com/asme Bypassing the Technocratic State in South Korea Doctors Mobilizing Korean Medicine in the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 James Flowers | ORCID: 0000-0003-2361-119X Brain Pool Program Research Fellow, Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea [email protected] Abstract This article reveals an important, yet hidden, Korean response to the COVID-19 pan- demic in 2020 that goes beyond the actions of the state. It focuses on the Korean medi- cine doctors who were excluded from any government-led public health or treatment plans for COVID-19. Bypassing the state, they used telehealth to provide herbal medi- cines to 20 percent of COVID-19 patients in South Korea. Traditional medicine doctors volunteered their services and financial resources to fill a gap in COVID-19 care. Most observers attribute Korean success in controlling COVID-19 to the leadership of the technocratic state with buy-in from the population. However, the case of Korea offers an example of bottom-up healthcare in a community where people chose their own native cultural resources and helps to explain how doctors were able to take the initia- tive to autonomously work with people in the community to help to stop the otherwise rapid transmission of the virus. Keywords Korean medicine – COVID-19 – telemedicine – alternative to state technocratism – psychological healing On June 17, 2020, a small group of Association of Korean Medicine (AKOM) leading figures participated in a policy forum in the Korean National Assembly Building in Yŏŭido, central Seoul, to discuss the application, response, and implementation of Korean medicine in the future post-COVID-19 South Korea.

Two Chinese medicine species constants and the accurate identification of Chinese medicines Huabin zou School of chemistry and chemical engineering of Shandong University, Jinan 250100, P.R.China Correspodence:[email protected] Abstract: Since the ancient times, all over the world, the identification of herbal medicines have to be based on empirical knowledge. In this article two species constants of traditional Chinese medicines(TCM) were discovered relying on the maximum information states of Dual index information theory equation, or common heredity and variation information theory. The two species constants, common peak ratios Pg = 61% and Pg = 70%, which corresponding to symmetry and asymmetry variation states, respectively, were used as two absolute quantitative criteria to identify complex biology systems-TCM. Considered the influences of many other factors on components and experiment processes, the practical theoretical identification standards should be established Pg≧58~64% and Pg≧67~73% ,within the relative error within -3% and + 3% of information value around the maximum information states. Combining the maximum number of effective sample optimum method with this two theoretical standards, the optimized classification of a TCM sample set can be carried out correctly. 42 samples belonging to four species of combination Chinese medicines were tested. The infrared (IR) fingerprint spectra (FPS) of their powder were measured and analyzed by means of the approach provided above.

Abstract: The present finding aid represents the fruits of a multiyear collaborative effort, undertaken at the initiative of then UCLA Chancellor Charles Young, to collect, collate, classify, and annotate available materials relating to the China Democracy Movement and tiananmen crisis of 1989. These materials---including, inter alia, thousands of documents, transcribed radio broadcasts, local newspaper and journal articles, wall posters, electronic communications, and assorted ephemeral sources, some in Chinese and some in English---provide a wealth of information for scholars, present and future, who wish to gain a better understanding of the complex, swirling forces that surrounded the extraordinary "Beijing Spring" of 1989 and its tragic denouement. The scholarly community is indebted to those who have collected and arranged this archive of materials about the China Democracy Movement and Tiananmen Incident Archives.
