8 Team 1st XI

Captain Joe Barrs Vice Captain Andrew Gale/Tom Philp Review of season With the disappointment of relegation in 2015 still leaving a bad taste, 2016 for the 1st XI was all about ensuring continuous improvement. This is the next phase in our transition as a club, and having replaced experience with youth in recent years, we had to stay faithful to that investment and nurture the growth of a young and inexperienced 1st XI. In honesty, I believe that as much as it hurt, relegation to the Cambridgeshire Tucker league will be of significant benefit to the team and the club in the long-run. As for this year we have learned how to win games as a team, we have started to create an identity - what do we want to be great at, what do we want to be feared for? This identity has come in the form of an outstanding fielding unit; the improvements visible in this aspect of our game are exponential and we are becoming renowned for being exceptional in the field – but still work to do. The bowling unit has also gelled nicely; we have a wealth of youthful spin talent at the club, and the seamers have slowly but surely learned their trade as a unit in 50/50 cricket. Our is where I see our biggest development coming over the next few seasons, as we gain more experience. There have been outstanding performances: our chase Vs Blunham losing only 1 wicket, our total Vs Ramsey (278-5), plus stand out performances from Giles, Alec and Ali and a match-wining partnership between Michael Turner and Jack Sneath of 145 to beat Histon. However we must be more consistent with bat across the board to be more dominant. It is significant that we are winning more as a team and symbolic of a successful 2016. We will challenge for the title in 2017!

9 Team 2nd XI

Captain Ray Mordini Vice Captain Adrian Grinonneau Ryan Brown Review of the season In summary, although we faced the disappointment of coming down a league after such a strong finish to last season, we had a very consistent 2016 finishing 3rd and if a few other matches had gone our way, we could quite easily have finished top of Tucker Prem 2. In hindsight, it's probably the right level for our club at this point in time but most pleasing was the progress of our players to handle match situations and even more pleasing was the contribution of many players and not necessarily relying on a few. Some highlights - Grinners 60no vs Kimbolton coming in with 8 overs left in the innings; Widge's continued consistency with the bat and we'll deserved promotion to the first team; Mike Turner's improvement with both bat and gloves; Finn Karsten match winning spells vs Warboys and Weston Colville; terrific spells of bowling by Salty against Newborough and Ufford Park; the consistency of old stalwarts like Thommo and Niri; the emerging young players Appleby, J Ormsby, and Whitehead who continue to get better; Ben Harris' raw ability with both bat and ball; the promotion of Ali Hancock and Mihir Chandraker into the first team; Cam Taylor consistently slowish medium pacers plus his excellent contributions with the bat; Kevin Deamer's fielding; Alec Turner driving across 3 counties when we needed help at St Ives; our brilliant win over March Town away. We did the double over them this season although they won the league); and of course the 133no by Jonny Brace against Warboys which was our only centurion of the season. All in all I've enjoyed skippering this crew most weeks! A big thanks to the 35 players that turned out for the 2s this season and I'm already looking forward to the next.

Team 3rd XI (Wenden 1s)

Captain Paul Brown Vice Captain Jonny Hancock Review of season In our first season back in Senior 3 the team’s first goal was to maintain our league status which after the first game of the season seemed a long way off! It’s not the first time we have been at the wrong end of a drubbing from the eventual champions but I am happy to say they felt the full force of Wenden 1s at the return fixture! Less said about that game the better other than to say there is a need for neutral umpires! The season itself was dominated by availability, as is the case with all teams. At our strongest we would compete 2 divisions above but more pleasing at our weakest we more than held our own at Senior level. A balance of old and young came together and played with a smile on their faces! Performance wise there really have been some stand out performances with the bat. 4 players scoring hundreds. Price, Goodwin, Charge and Kimberley who have been complemented well by a long tail! With the ball we have struggled to turn out a regular attack but have always competed and all bowlers used have looked comfortable at the level. Special mention to Ronnie Ledwith who has bowled consistently well throughout the season and has been unlucky not to have taken more wickets. I would also like to thank Tom Goodwin whose glove work has been outstanding throughout the season. His high standards behind the stumps have lifted us as a team. He is without doubt the best “middle aged” keeper in the club! I would like to finish by saying the club is in a lot stronger place than when we last ventured into senior cricket. We lasted one season! With a wealth of young lads and a stronger pool of senior players I hope the teams’ role as a conduit between village and senior cricket can continue to improve.

Captain Simon Cooke Vice Captains Tom Rodda Review of season A great start, a rocky middle in July/early August and a great recovery at the end saw the 5ths finish in third place missing out on promotion by a point! Captain Ryan Brown Vice Captain Review of season It’s not all about winning!!! It’s all about taking part!!! Sunday cricket is all about playing with a smile on your face. Having a nice afternoon. 15 Team Ladies

Captain Vice Captain Review of season The Two Counties Ladies Challenge presented an opportunity to continue with the development of our senior girls. Whilst we knew it would be a challenge and involve a lot of travel to Ipswich, Mildenhall and elsewhere it was either this or risking the squad losing momentum and undoing the good work of recent years. Whilst 3 games were conceded and we finished bottom of the league, the experience prompted much thinking about 2017, and also enabled us to identify a group of women and girls who might be interested for next season. There is work to be done in the winter!

Captain Spencer Hill, Jonny Brace Vice Captain Review of season We won our first two games comfortably then lost a close fought game against Colchester to finish second in our Group. We qualified for the Q/Fs on NRR and were drawn away against Wanstead. We restricted Wanstead to 110 but our batters struggled on a “used” wicket. We used 21 different players over the four games which shows the depth of the squad for next year!
