He served as an instructor with 4th Reserve Battalion until 1916 when the need for quarrymen in France saw him conscripted to serve with the Royal Engineers. G Palmer Territorial Married 7 MGCo Sgt George Palmer - longstanding member of F Company 5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Born in Wisbech, he lived at 30 Quorn Rd., and worked as an Engine fitter with Mountsorrel Granite Company. He served in France with 1/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was wounded in action at Ypres in 1915. He later served with the Royal Engineers Quarry Maintenance Section in France.

    Operation Overlord, 6 June 1944 Nottinghamshire The landings on five beaches in northern France on the morning of 6 June 1944 by upwards of 156,000 troops of 14 allied countries marked the beginning of Operation Overlord. These were contemporary with successes in other theatres of the Second World War in 1944, in Italy at Monte Casino and in Northeast India at Kohima. It heralded the last phase of the conflict and the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe. The invasion was the result of long and meticulous planning as well as a triumph of combined operations between all the arms of the services in the sea, on the land and in the air, with the support of the civilian population including industry and agriculture which provided the armaments, ordnance, equipment, rations etc Men and women from all backgrounds and walks of life were involved and many paid with their lives. Men and women from Nottinghamshire served in all branches of the Armed Forces during this conflict and it is not possible to say how many people were involved except it would be many thousands. We can however identify some examples specifically from our own county: Royal Navy Whilst there were no ships specifically linked to Nottinghamshire, as the largest amphibious operation ever seen, the contribution of both the Royal Navy, Royal Marine Commandos and the Merchant Navy cannot be overstated with sailors from Nottinghamshire serving in all three services. Guards Armoured Division The Guards Armoured Division which trained for D Day at Thoresby and was among the earliest to land on D Day.

Despite testing conditions during the service, spirits weren't dampened and the Colours of all three Battalions were on parade. The event was attended by local dignitaries, cadets and the wider regimental family. The Crich memorial is dedicated to the soldiers of The Mercian Regiment, The Worcester and Sherwood Foresters and The Sherwood Foresters who have been killed in action since the Great War. MERCIAN SOLDIERS INVOLVED IN TESTING NEW COMBAT KIT FOR INFANTRY TROOPS - The new personal armour, known as Virtus, uses the latest materials and offers the same protection as the Osprey system but it is significantly lighter, moves with the body more easily and produces a slimmer profile. The Virtus system has been tested by soldiers from The Mercian Regiment, with troops providing feedback on all design elements. The experiences of troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have also helped to design the new armour. MERCIAN TEAMS IN COLTMAN VC STRETCHER RACE - Soldiers from 1, 2, 4 MERCIAN and The Mercian Regimental Support Team converged on Malvern in June for the annual Coltman Stretcher race. Competition was fierce, with 14 teams from across the armed forces taking part in the gruelling ten-mile race. It involved climbing the major peaks of Malvern Hills to raise money for the Royal British Legion and 2 MERCIAN performed brilliantly to finish first.

    Wellington Remembers 1914–1918 122 Major Harry Leslie Paddock Sherwood Foresters Born on 24 October 1890 in Edgmond, Shropshire Lived at The Villa, Edgmond, and The Hollies, Haygate Road, Wellington Killed in action on 23 March 1918 aged 27 in France Buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension; Grave 1.G.3 His story Harry Leslie Paddock was born on 24 October 1890, to George and Ellen Paddock. George married Ellen Alberta Williams in Hereford in 1888. A daughter born in 1889 had died in infancy. By 1891 the family lived at the Villa, Edgmond and George was working as a flour mill manager. The family moved to Wellington sometime prior to the 1901 census, but on census day Harry was staying with his aunt and uncle, William and Evelyn Hyslop, at Woodcote, Church Stretton. They ran a ‘private asylum’ for professional people. Despite the slightly depressing environment, it is likely that Harry was inspired to follow a military career by his uncle, who was a retired Royal Field Artillery officer. Harry attended Adams’ Grammar School in Newport (now called Haberdashers’ Adams), when he was living in Caynton, Newport, then Bedford Grammar School from 1903 to 1908. He studied at Carlisle and Gregson (Jimmy’s) Military Tutors in London from March to October 1909, before becoming a professional soldier. On entry to the Royal Military College in February 1910 as a ‘gentleman cadet’, he was 5’ 9½” tall, 136 lbs with 6/6 eyesight. He passed out in December 1910, 112th in his intake. On commissioning he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters (Nottingham and Derbyshire Regiment).
