The lives of the ancient Egyptians can easily be categorised and pigeonholed. Like any good historian, you need to view the civilisation as a whole, and the best starting point is the origin of these amazing people. So who were the ancient Egyptians? Where did they come from? Key functions of this so-called royal harem can be identified as the residence and stage for the court of the royal women, the place for the upbringing and education of the royal children and favored non-royal children as the future ruling class, the provision of musical performance in courtly life and cult, as well as the supply and provisioning of the royal family. -

Lloyd ·@)WILEY-BLACKWELL A John Wiley & Sons, Ltd., Publication CHAPTERll The Pharaoh and Pharaonic Office Ellen E Morris As in many sacred monarchies, the central paradox of Egyptian kingship was that the body politic was unequivocally divine but was by necessity filled by a body natural, subject to the laws of nature and to all too human foibles (Kantorowitz 1957). In emic terms, the king when fully immersed in his hallowed role as the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt was the nsw, while his physical, individual self was referred to as the .tim-or "inprnation" (Goedicke 1960: 17-37, 51-79; Blumenthal 1970: 23). Those few points in Egyptian history where the humanity of a particular Pharaoh may be glimpsed are precious on account of their rarity. For the most part, Pharaohs were portrayed as the living image of the most esteemed god, the distillation of all that was perfect in heaven and earth. This chapter focuses on the manner in which this Pharaonic ideal of kingship was promoted, enacted, and assiduously protected from any tarnish that an imperfect mortal occupant might introduce. 1 . The Foundation Myth of Kingship Even prior to Egypt's official unification, Nilotic kings styled themselves as the earthly avatar of the falcon-god H~rus. The Horus name, later written inside a stylized palace, conveyed the ideology that the divine falcon's spirit had alit on the palace and infused its occupant with supernatural power. At the dawn of the state, this message was further imparted by scenes of the god dominatlng a foreigner in parallel with the king or offering the sign of life to the martial personification of his name, thereby animating and invigorating him. -

A ROYAL PORTRAIT HEAD IN THE COLLECTION OF THE MICHAEL C. CARLOS MUSEUM AT EMORY UNIVERSITY by KAREN MARGARET BRYSON Under the Direction of Dr. Melinda Hartwig ABSTRACT This thesis discusses a small, red granite, Egyptian royal portrait head in the collection of the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. The head is determined to be a fragment from a group depicting the king in front of the monumental figure of a divine animal, probably a ram or baboon. Scholars have attributed the head to the reigns of various New Kingdom pharaohs, including Horemheb and Seti I, but on more careful examination its style demonstrates that it dates to the reign of Ramesses II (1304-1237 B.C.). -

An occasion to highlight its assets and specificities: a 3,200-square metre space to be able to create in total freedom, the most powerful technological tools in the service of the exhibition design and the support of the best specialists in every field to ensure the scholarly quality of its exhibitions. In 2008 the Grimaldi Forum Monaco presented Queens of Egypt, an exhibition that remained in visitors’ memories. In the summer of 2018, Golden Treasures of the Pharaohs, 2,500 Years of the Goldsmith’s Art in Ancient Egypt will bring together more than 150 masterpieces from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, presenting a series of prestigious ensembles discovered in the royal and princely tombs of pharaonic Egypt. These exhibitions have benefitted from the expertise of Christiane Ziegler, exhibition curator, honorary director of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the Musée du Louvre, editor of the publication of the Mission Archéologique du Musée du Louvre à Saqqara (Egypt) and president of the Centre d’Archéologie Memphite. -
Female Figurines from the Mut Precinct: Context and Ritual Function

The figurines date from the New Kingdom to the Late Period (ca. 1550-332 BCE). Ceramic figurines are frequently overlooked by archaeologists, art historians, and social historians because they lack the aesthetic qualities usually associated with Egyptian art. However, the Hopkins-excavated figurines display features that mark them as standardized ritual objects. I argue that ceramic female figurines were produced in workshops, utilized by magician/physicians in healing rituals, and regularly snapped and discarded at the end of their effective <lives>. This isa new, broader interpretations for objects that have previously been considered as toys, dolls, concubine figures, and – most recently – votive <fertility figurines.> Chapter 1 presents a brief history oftheMut Precinct and summarizes the work of John Hopkins at the site. It also addresses the current state of figurine studies in Egyptology, including a critique of the <fertility figurine> theory. Finally, Ipresenta typology for the Mut Precinct figurines. Chapter 2 is a detailed study of the materials and manufacture of ceramic female figurines. I suggest that the figurines were manufactured by craftsmen in state-sponsored workshops, and that the red hue of many figures signals that the objects were malevolent and ultimately to be destroyed. Chapter 3 presents translations and commentary for magico-medical spells calling for female figures of clay, which demonstrate how female figurines functioned in magical rituals. -
The Great Revolt of the Egyptians (205–186 BC)
The great revolt of the Egyptians (205–186 BC) Introduction With the invasion of Alexander the Great (333 BC) a Greek regime is established in Egypt, which will last until the Arab invasion a thousand years later (640 AD), first under the Macedonian dynasty of the Ptolemies, from 30 BC onwards under Roman and Byzantine emperors. For more than a millennium the land of the Nile is directed from the Greek city of Alexandria, situated on a peninsula before the coast of Egypt, a bit like New York before the coast of the US. The language spoken at the royal court and used by the royal administration is different from that spoken and understood by the overwhelming majority of the population. Although the Ptolemies were officially recognized as pharaohs by the temples and even crowned by the high priest of Memphis, although they supported Egyptian religion by subsidizing the cults and building great temples (see below, text 2), they remained fundamentally a foreign dynasty. Starting from 246 BC there are several native uprisings. During the most successful of these, all Upper Egypt revolted against Alexandria for almost twenty years (206–186 BC) under the leadership of two native pharaohs, called Hyrgonaphor (Haronnophris) and Chaonnophris. Though no monuments have been preserved of these last native Egyptian pharaohs, we are able to reconstruct the main events and even the ideological background of the revolt on the basis of a very diverse source material, both in Greek and in Egyptian. Here I will look at the revolt, mainly on the basis of the texts in English translation, from three different angles: I. -
God's Wife, God's Servant
GOD’S wiFE, GOD’S seRVant Drawing on textual, iconographic and archaeological evidence, this book highlights a historically documented (but often ignored) instance, where five single women were elevated to a position of supreme religious authority. The women were Libyan and Nubian royal princesses who, consecutively, held the title of God’s Wife of Amun during the Egyptian Twenty-third to Twenty-sixth dynasties (c.754–525 bc). At a time of weakened royal authority, rulers turned to their daughters to establish and further their authority. Unmarried, the princess would be dispatched from her father’s distant political and administrative capital to Thebes, where she would reign supreme as a God’s Wife of Amun. While her title implied a marital union between the supreme solar deity Amun and a mortal woman, the God’s Wife was actively involved in temple ritual, where she participated in rituals that asserted the king’s territorial authority as well as Amun’s universal power. As the head of the Theban theocracy, the God’s Wife controlled one of the largest economic centers in Egypt: the vast temple estate at Karnak. Economic independence and religious authority spawned considerable political influence: a God’s Wife became instrumental in securing the loyalty of the Theban nobility for her father, the king. Yet, despite the religious, economic and political authority of the God’s Wives during this tumultuous period of Egyptian history, to date, these women have only received cursory attention from scholars of ancient Egypt. Tracing the evolution of the office of God’s Wife from its obscure origins in the Middle Kingdom to its demise shortly after the Persian conquest of Egypt in 525 bc, this book places these five women within the broader context of the politically volatile, turbulent seventh and eighth centuries bc, and examines how the women, and the religious institution they served, were manipulated to achieve political gain. -

THE SHABAKA STONE: AN INTRODUCTION JOSHUA J. BODINE Introduction1 Tucked away in the north end of room 4, among the collections in the British Museum’s Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan, is a little known antiquity of Egypt from the 25th Dynasty: a stela known as the Shabaka Stone.2 This obscure stone and its contents were a mystery for nearly one hun- 1. The aim of this paper is to provide an easily-accessible, introductory treatment of the Shabaka Stone in the English language, one which deals with many of the important aspects of the stone together in one article. Excepting a couple articles written by Wim van den Dungen and posted to his internet site, such a publication does not really exist (at least that I could find in the process of my own research). Many of the earlier and important treatments (and even recent ones) are in German or French, or are old and not easy to come by for the average interested reader.
