Food Alphabet Trivia: Letter A Answers 1. Asparagus. It is a common side paired with Steak Oscar, where your steak, asparagus, and crab are covered with Bearnaise sauce. 2. Artichoke. Did you know it’s a variety of the thistle, and what you eat is the bud before it turns into a flower? 3. Alfredo sauce is a creamy Parmesan sauce. It is usually white, but can sometimes be shaded slightly yellow, de- pending on the amount of Parmesan is found in the sauce. 4. Baked Alaska is a scoop of ice cream covered in meringue, but sometimes other ingredients like nuts, coconut, graham crackers, corn flakes, or any other topping, and fried quickly. It is refrozen to keep it solid, and placed on sponge cake. It can be served with brown sugar, sugar, or cinnamon. 5. You need avocados to make guacamole! 6. Apple. Jolly Rancher was originally founded in 1949, in Denver, Colorado. The store, called "Ranch Maid Ice Cream," sold many things, including ice cream and sodas. The name "Jolly Rancher" is to show the wonderful west- ern hospitality. It wasn't until 1951 that Jolly Rancher nixed the ice cream and started selling more hard candies. In 2002, however, Jolly Rancher was sold to Hershey's, and stopped being produced in Colorado. Now the candies are made in Canada. 7. Allspice is a dried berry used as a seasoning. It can be bought whole or ground. Ground allspice is great to "spice things up" a bit. Whole allspice is very bitter, and should be used sparingly. If you add a few berries to boiling water, it will add a wonderful flavor to poached fish. 8. Milk is an incorrect answer for two reasons. One, milk may stop the heartburn at first, but only because it is a thick and cold liquid going down your throat. Heartburn is actually caused by extra acid going up into your throat and burning the esophagus. Milk will actually cause the acid to increase and cause even more pain after the short burst of feeling well. Eating an apple core does not help. It is simply an urban legend that eating the apple core will cure all illnesses. Apple cider vinegar may work, but not well. You would have to drink an awful lot of vinegar for it to work! Eating a piece of gum will help, because chewing gum encourages swallowing, and this will cause you to swal- low the acid building up into your throat, and reducing the pain. Acid reducers are designed to reduce acid, so this is the best to take if you have heartburn! 9. Amaretto 10. Andouille, pronounced an-due-we, found commonly in many pizzas too.

Food Alphabet, Letter B Answers 1. Bok choy is related to the turnip, but looks more like celery. The vegetable is of Chinese descent, and is often called Chinese cabbage. It is little wonder, then, that it is also related to cabbage. 2. To make Bechamel sauce, scalded milk is whisked into a roux, which is a butter and flour mixture that is the thick- ening agent to many sauces. 3. Bernaise sauce is yellow in color. It is thought of as a very simple sauce, although it is difficult to perfect. The sauce is made of egg yolk and butter, and is flavored with shallots and tarragon. 4. Broccoli 5. Baguette 6. Bouillabaisse is a fish stew that originated in Marseilles. The word "bouillabaisse" is a term that combines two words, one meaning boil, the other meaning simmer. 7. "Brat" means fine chopped meat, and "wurst" means sausage. It is not, however, derived from the German term "braten," which means to pan fry. This is a common misconception. 8. Barbecue sauce 9. Beets beware! 10. Cordon bleu is a chicken stuffed with ham and cheese. Bourbon chicken is an American dish that is often found in Chinese restaurants. It was first invented in , which is why the food fits in the "cajun" category.
