The 4-year-old son of Candy Ride (ARG), saddled by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen , won for the third time in his last four races and the Stephen Foster victory secured the colt a starting spot in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI) at California’s Del Mar Race Course on Nov. 4. The race was part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In Classic Division” series of races, which awards winners of its races an automatic berth in Breeders’ Cup Classic along with traveling expenses for the journey to Southern California. (Friday, June 28, 2019) – When trainer Merrill Scherer attended Friday’s races at Churchill Downs, one of the biggest surprises met him when family and friends from across the country surprised the veteran conditioner for an advance celebration of his 80 th birthday. “I can’t believe I was swindled in to coming over for this,” Merrill joked. “This is unbelievable. I can’t believe everyone around the racetrack was able to keep their mouths shut and not tell me. This is a moment I will never forget.” Five of Scherer’s sons attended Friday, including fellow trainer Gary Scherer , who flew in from Minnesota where he currently is stabled at Canterbury Park. “The Scherers typically don’t see each other more than once a year,” said Clay Scherer , Merrill’s son and Kentucky-based bloodstock agent. “To get everyone together, including a lot of his owners, is very special.” Scherer began his training career in 1962 and has been at it ever since. Scherer has spent the majority of his career based in the Midwest with stints in Illinois, Kentucky and Louisiana. It wasn’t until 1993 when he won his first graded stakes race with Little Bro Lantis in the Stars and Stripes Handicap (GIII) at Arlington. Since statistics started being regularly kept for horse racing in 1976, Scherer has won 1,410 races with earnings of more than $24.6 million.

Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.
