Q: What do you call a boomerang that doesn't come back? / i - s tZXCK. Councillors Comments The road work east side o f Milo should be completed in a few days. Eliminating soft spots & cutting a few hills make this stretch o f road a lot safer. This crew will be moving south to Ken Sealocks & rebuilding the road there. Long over due I think as there are some soft spots & sharp hills there now. The ferry road here & the coal mine road south o f Champion are to go to tender soon.. The money for these two projects has to be spent in 1998 so these jobs have to be done. The gravel trucks are at the Brown pit now so if you need gravel you should do it soon. We hired 5 contract trucks to catch up on the gravelling and they have now left. Some o f the equipment the dirt crew are using are rented. Machine operators are scarce so we have been lucky so far. Nick has spent his life working in road construction and always seems to know somebody needing a job. Unfortunately the paper work on 542 has taken a long time to complete. N ow environment people have to go over the project & then w e need final approval from Alberta Transportation. Its nearly the end o f August so w e can't tell when we will get started. We still hope to get some work done this fall. I f Alberta Transportation had given us approval 2 months earlier w e could easily have the project done by freeze up. I'm not happy with the situation but I still want to get started this fall. It appears to me that some o f the people who buy lots in the development along Lake McGregor don't know where the city limits are. Most o f them have a hard time ^ understanding how it is in the county. Help is not a phone call away. There is no garbage truck, no policeman driving by, no paved streets etc. They buy a nice quiet place in the country & then want it to be just like their place in the city, with less taxes o f coarse. You should see some of the letters we get on this subject. Every development should have a sign at the gate "buyer beware", ask a few logical questions & look around you. It is because o f some o f these people that the appeal board is now going to charge $300.00 for an assessment appeal. If your appeal is successful you get your money back. The Hutterite Colony on the River have applied to the for development permits to build a new colony on our side o f the river. Their present site will be flooded when the new dam is built some time in the next century. You might want to call your local M. L. A. to see who is paying for these new buildings. I can guess, can you?

The Milo Lions once again cooked and served a delicious barbecued beef dinner to nearly 400 people on August 9. The barbeque was held at the hall with tables set inside, for those who wished to be out of the weather, and on the west side parking lot for those who enjoyed the hot summer sun. The menu consisted of barbequed beef, cooked by Ian Thomson & assistants, Taber corn, baked potatoes, cole slaw, buns, pickles, coffee and juice. The meal was finished off with dixie cups which just hit the spot on such a hot day. The barbeque seems to be the one day of the summer when people return to Milo to enjoy a delicious meal and visit with family and renew old acquaintances. While the parents visited the kids played in the well groomed Lions park which is only a short walk from the hall. Everyone enjoyed the day! Thank-you Milo Lions Club for another enjoyable

Vulcan: 104 Center Street East 485-2070 Chinook South “AA” Majors Win ‘A’ Consolation at Prairie Playoffs

This years Major All Star team (11 & 12 year olds) had a very successful season. The team consists of Ryan Surina, Andrew Gilbert, Corey Burgess (from Vulcan); Brett Wilson, Willy Nelson (from Milo); Steven Sherstabetoff (from Arrowwood); Patrick McFarland, Rory McLeod (from Carmangay); Kyle Sletto (from Champion); and Jay Sewell, Robert Hazen (from Blackie). The team was coach/managed by Rocky Wilson (Milo). Helping out on the bench was assistant coach Ross Hazen (Blackie).

Within the league play with Ft. Macleod, (Southwest & Norcrest) and Magrath, the Chinook South team finished with six wins and two losses. The team placed second to the Lethbridge Southwest team who went undefeated.

At the Prairie Championships, the team continued to play well. There were 21 teams at the Medicine Hat tournament (held July 24th - 26th). The Chinook South team got off to a good start against the Edmonton Millwood Mariners winning 15 to 5. The team then played two games against the West Indians winning both games, 10 to 0 and 12 to 6.

Chinook South then came up against Chinook West (Ft. Macleod) who they had defeated twice during league play. Both wins were by 8 to 7 scores. As the scores indicate, the two teams were very evenly matched. With the odds in Macleod’s favor, the Chinook South took a loss by an 11 to 1 score.

With the loss behind them, the Chinook South came back and beat the Regina Nationals by a score of 10 to 7. With this win, the Chinook South team earned the right to play in the Consolation Final on the ‘A’ side of the Prairie Championships. The team played Northwest Calgary Blue Jays who they defeated by a 10 to 0 score.

As a result, the Chinook South Jays finished the tournament with five wins and one loss and the Consolation winners on the ‘A’ side of the tournament. A great finish to a very successful season.

As a league, the teams did very well. The Lethbridge Southwest team went undefeated all the way, winning the championship against the Chinook West team from Ft. Macleod.

Congratulations guys on a great ball season. Thanks to all the parents for their support. Thanks to Ruth-Ann Sherstabetoff for acting as our official score keeper, George Thompson for being our Diamond Director and Sherry Thompson for looking after the umpires. Finally thanks to the following organizations/businesses for their donations - Buffalo Hills Oilfield Services Ltd., Dave’s Vacuum Services, Milo Lions, Vulcan Village Gas Bar, Carmangay Lions, Blackspring Ridge Farms, Champion Lions, Surina Lumber, Bumper to Bumper and the Vulcan UFA.
