6 chinese new year The Chinese New Year Celebration, one of BINUS SCHOOL Serpong’s annual programmes, started in the first week of January with the ECY Chinese Cultural Week. Each ECY class had different activities and games related to Chinese Language, such as: puzzles, songs, pick a bean, etc. In the following week, EL also had their Chinese Cultural Week. Each level had different activities from Chinese traditional games, making lanterns, Chinese instrument exhibition, Chinese calligraphy etc. All students enjoyed the activities. They practiced speaking the Chinese Language and experienced the culture through hands-on experiences. By January 31st, 2020, the ECY had their assembly by 9.00 a.m at the Main Library Hall, meanwhile EL had their assembly by 10.00 a.m at the Sjuman Hall. All of the students who participated

The participants said that the sharing and tips given to them were beneficial as they learned insights on how the kinesthetic method could be applied. It was indeed an interactive session. They look forward for another ECY EdShare programme in the future.

The event featured three special, aspiring student leaders of grades 5 and 6, in which they talked about the common theme, “Becoming a Global Citizen”, through their own personal experiences.

First, Aurelie Vidal of 6G shared her experience on growing up differently due to being a mixed- raced child. While she disclosed her struggles with adjusting to different cultures, she felt hopeful and grateful at the fact that her future involves exposure and integration of cultural understanding, which can help how she views the world later on in life. Afterwards, Raden Roro Hanania Kamila of 6B signified the importance of kindness as a global language through her experience as the Student Council Vice President. She divulged some of the challenges and pressure she faced as a leader. However, one valuable lesson she learned the most was on using kindness to communicate with others, especially in any group assignment where she was a leader. In order to be an effective leader, she realized that kindness was the key in solving most problems her groups faced. Finally, Derrick Xie of 5E moved the audience with his strong belief that kindness is “not a noun” as described in the English dictionary; it is a powerful action verb. According to the 11-year-old Student Council President, kindness transcends any kind of barrier of cultural and language differences. A polite nod of acknowledgement is generally known for its universal language for respect. A simple, yet genuine smile signals warmth and acceptance in any culture. Though the three future leaders delivered their messages through different experiences and ideals, they all agreed that kindness was the key to becoming effective global citizens. In an era where negativity is on the rise, kindness is and will continue to be a unifying force that connects all. by Ms. Fernalia E. Destructive Blaze

By Stephanie Gabrielle Lim (6E)

The sight of grey clouds in the air, The forest that looked so fine, ignited without a shred of care. brought shivers down my spine.

It devoured its surroundings in a blink of an eye. The bright lights that stood in the dark, would be history’s worst mark The Blame where many would die. By Keshia Valeska Lonanta (EL 6D) When I gazed at the sight of the distressed trees, I heard sirens wailing left and right. Hundreds of people came into rescue to fight The air, once smelling as fresh as a daisy, Too late, the trees have lost their chance. where birds once flew to sing their songs,

With a sniff, a horrible stench of burnt trees enters my nose. now polluted and is very hazy. The flames grew as big as a thousand stacks of hay. There is surely something wrong With that overwhelming foes, Everything might just turn into ash and wither away. The ocean, once looking so clean and pure, tasting salty and home to many sea animals, It is a monster that keeps guffawing and expanding, is now as filthy as a trash can, hard to be cured. as the humans desperately tries to put it out. With growing anxiety and doubt, The waves, yelling when near the shore, is furious like a cannibal. the show is finally ending. The land, once thriving with life The desperation, The forests and their animals, true beauties of nature, to save the vast forest, now polluted and chopped down by tools sharper than a knife. instead, caused the destruction The trees, begging them to stop, frightened that there will be no future. So, what is left of our planet? The past is the past. Though we cannot turn back time, the good times must last, Let it not be the sadness we experience for a lifetime.

There is still hope. All we need is courage. Don’t let it slip away again like soap. We can share our knowledge.

Whose fault is it though? Is it the animals’? Is it too mysterious to be found like a shadow? Is it the trees’ for being so easily flammable?

Is it the sun’s for being too hot? Is it the ocean’s for being so dirty? Is it the land’s for giving off trash in some spots? Or is it ours; you and me?

skype session Sharing Cultures BINUS SCHOOL Serpong collaborated with Chirec International School for a cross-cultural video call. Chirec International School in Hyderabad, India, reached out to BINUS SCHOOL Serpong for a unique learning exercise. Their 3rd grade students were learning about how houses are built in other countries, specifically about environmental considerations, the thought-process behind the designs, and the cultural significance of rituals and history.

Seven 3rd grade students from BINUS SCHOOL Serpong—one representative from each class—were chosen for this exercise. Together with their Science teachers and Social Studies teachers, they put together a presentation of how houses are built in Indonesia and the traditions behind them. They even submitted photos of their own houses to be shared with their counterparts in India. All of this was in preparation for a video call with over 50 3rd grade students from Chirec International School on the 7th of February 2020.

The call lasted half an hour, with the BINUSIANs sitting in a classroom in Indonesia, and the Chirec students in their assembly hall in Hyderabad. There were a lot of questions, laughter, and sharing. The Chirec students even showed their new BINUSIAN friends the posters they made from the presentation that was sent earlier in the week.

It was a fun and fruitful experience for everyone and yet another innovation towards friendship and learning. by Mr. Jeremy Quintos Cochon EL Subject Head (Science)

We have made use of digital means of communication whenever possible, we save scrap paper for recycling, by Mr. Jeremy Quintos Cochon and recently we have implemented a ban on single use utensils and EL Subject Head (Science) food containers. This past 4 March, however, we reaped the fruits of one of our most ambitious sustainability efforts: Hydroponic gardening.

Initiated by Ms. Elsie and headed by Mr. Novan, with the assistance of Ms. Elisabet and our lab technician Ms. Wanda, the advice of Ms. Bee Henrietta Manalang—a local expert and advocate for hydroponic farming, has come to a fruition. BINUS SCHOOL Serpong has a fully functional hydroponic gardening system that can grow over 70 organically grown plants every few weeks. The first plants grown in the new hydroponic farming system were part of the Grade 5 Science Annual Project wherein they observed the growth of plants that they germinated from lettuce seeds themselves. One set of plants would be grown the traditional way in soil and another set would be grown with the hydroponic method. After Annual Project was over and the lettuce plants were fully grown, it was harvest time. The students learned the Science and the joy of growing their own food, and of course, they got to enjoy the fruits of their labor. The organically grown lettuce were washed, chopped, and served as a salad the following day for lunch to the Grade 5 students who grew them. 18 gc talk The Tale Behind GCs This is only for a normal day.
