  • Grand Slams’ Are Iconic Global Sports Competitions And, As Proven by the 2017 Australian Open, Capable of Drawing Blockbuster Audiences
The four tennis ‘grand slams’ are iconic global sports competitions and, as proven by the 2017 Australian Open, capable of drawing blockbuster audiences. Roger Federer’s victory over Rafael Nadal brought Eurosport its largest-ever audience for a tennis match with 20.7 million viewers across Europe, while in the host country, the 3.6-million (4.4-million peak) figure was the highest audience for the final in over a decade. The prestige and image attached to grand slam tennis is not lost on the sport’s broadcast partners. For domestic broadcasters this has led to a continuous fee increase for the quartet of slams. Using Sportcal’s Revenue Dashboard – available to subscribers of the Media Intelligence Centre – to analyse the domestic revenue generated, Sportcal Insight examines how the grand slams have enhanced their domestic rights revenues. Currency conversions, where possible, have been done at the time of the deal and modelled data has been used for incremental rises during a rights agreement. All grand slams have long-running domestic deals with established broadcasters. This, it can be argued, limits competition and the potential for mushrooming revenues, resulting in a more modest rise than might otherwise be the case. In Australia, free-to-air network Seven’s most recent deal with Tennis Australia is under investigation by the country’s corporate watchdog because a competitive bidding process wasn’t launched, amid claims that the governing body could have raised an extra A$50 million ($45 million) had the rights been taken to the open market. The 2017 women’s Australian Open final attracted 360,000 more viewers than the final of T20 cricket’s Big Bash League (aired on another free-to-air broadcaster, Network Ten, at the same time).

  • Physics of Tennis Lesson 4 Energy
The Physics of Tennis Lesson 4: Energy changes when a ball interacts with different surfaces Unit Overview: In this unit students continue to develop understanding of what can be at first glance a complicated system, the game of tennis. In this activity we have taken two components of the game of tennis, the ball and court, to see if we can model the interactions between them. This activity focuses on the energy interactions between ball and court. Objectives: Students will be able to- • Describe what forces interact when the ball hits a surface. • Understand what changes occur when potential and kinetic energy conversion is taking place within a system. At the high school level students should include connections to the concept of “work =FxD” and calculations of Ek = ½ 2 mv and Ep =mgh according to the conservation of energy principal. • Identify the types of energy used in this system. (restricted to potential & kinetic energy) • Comparative relative energy losses for typical court compositions. Lesson Time Required: Four class periods Next Generation Science/Common Core Standards: • NGSS: HS-PS3-1.Create a computational model to calculate the change in the energy of one component in a system when the change in energy of the other component(s) and energy flows in and out of the system are known. • CCSS.Math. Content: 8.F.B.4 Use functions to model relationships between quantities. • Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph.

  • Margaret Court Margaret Court Is Australia's Most Successful And
Margaret Court Margaret Court is Australia's most successful and celebrated tennis player of all time. No player in tennis history has ever surpassed her incredible record of 62 grand slam titles, in both singles and doubles. Margaret became a Christian while she was still the world's best, and when she finally retired from the game in 1976, she settled down to a life as a wife and mother, but could not resist the call of God that was on her life. Margaret Court in 1964 went on to win more Grand Slam titles than any other player in history, both male and female! In 1970, Court became the first woman during the open era (and the second woman in history) to win the singles Grand Slam (all four major tournaments in the same calendar year). Court won a record 24 of those titles, a record that still stands. She also won 19 women's doubles and 21 mixed doubles titles, giving her a record 64 major titles overall. She is the only woman to win the mixed doubles Grand Slam, which she accomplished twice. Her all surfaces (hard, clay, grass, and carpet) singles career winning percentage of 91.68% (1180–107) is one of the best of all-time, according to the Sporteology website.[1] Her open era singles career winning percentage of 91.37% (593–56) is also unequaled.[2] Her win-loss performance in all Grand Slam singles tournaments was 90.12% (210– 23). She was 95.31% (61–3) at the Australian Open, 90.38% (47–5) at the French Open, 85.10% (51– 9) at Wimbledon, and 89.47% (51–6) at the US Open.

  • THROWBACK THURSDAY: MARIA BUENO WINS HER THIRD WIMBLEDON Thursday 29 May 2014 by Leigh Walsh
THROWBACK THURSDAY: MARIA BUENO WINS HER THIRD WIMBLEDON Thursday 29 May 2014 By Leigh Walsh By Leigh Walsh Our Throwback Thursday series continues as Maria Bueno wins her third and final Wimbledon title , the only South American woman to win The Championships. Wimbledon.com goes back in time... “If you like graceful women and good tennis, you can watch Maria Bueno all day,” wrote Sports Illustrated’s Herbert Warren Wind in 1960. The Brazilian youngster, at 20, had just won back-to-back singles titles at Wimbledon and her talent was sending a wave of interest across the sporting world. Like Suzanne Lenglen before her and Evonne Goolagong Cawley after her, Bueno’s ability to wield a racket like a magician would a wand separated her from her peers. The right-hander was born to a tennis-loving couple who thrust a racket into their daughter’s hands at a young age. Along with her parents and brother Pedro, the Buenos spent much of their time hitting tennis balls back and forth at Clube de Regatas Tiete in Sâo Paulo on the doorstep of their family home. It was some 6,000 miles away, however, on the lawns of the All England Club where Bueno made a lasting mark on the game. And by the time the “Sao Paulo Swallow” arrived in South West London in 1964 bidding for a hat- trick of Wimbledon titles, she was a household name with her all-court game, fluid movement and elegant strokes endearing her to fans. The top four seeds all advanced to the semi-final stage that year.

  • This Is by Far, the Bigge
Good afternoon everybody, I am very honoured and proud to be standing here today in front of you all! This is by far, the biggest occasion I have ever spoken at, including being the speaker of my psychology graduation classes, on three occasions, as well as speaking on behalf of all past graduates when Palacky University, the second oldest University in the Czech Republic, celebrated the 70th anniversary of its re-establishment, two years ago. To be fair and speak from deep in my heart, then I have to start from the beginning. As you all know I come from Prague, Czech Republic which originates from Czechoslovakia, where tennis is very popular. The interest and following for the game can even be compared to that of soccer and ice hockey – the two biggest sports in my country. I am very proud to be part of the gallery of legends, who have contributed to the success of our sport in both my country and around the world. However, on this big occasion, I would like to remember some of the most influential names from Czechoslovakia, that made our sport so popular, thanks to their huge successes. I truly feel their role in my achievement of being inducted, into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, today. The history of tennis in my country began more than a hundred years ago. The oldest club, the I. CLTK, celebrated its 125th anniversary this year. From these early days I specifically would like to mention the Kozeluh brothers, with Karel being a Professional World Tennis Champion and Hall of Famer while his brother, Jan, reached a top 10 world ranking.

  • Goolagong Cawley Hails Ash Barty's Wimbledon
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ‘She made me proud’: Goolagong Cawley hails Ash Barty’s Wimbledon win ‘This is her time,’ tennis legend says of ‘little sister’ Australian Associated Press Sun 11 Jul 2021 Tennis legend and Wiradjuri woman Evonne Goolagong Cawley has paid a heartfelt tribute to “little sister” Ash Barty, saying she just sensed it was “her time” to win Wimbledon during Naidoc week. Barty’s nerve-wracking 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 final victory over Czech Karolina Pliskova overnight came 10 years after she won the Wimbledon girls’ singles title at age 15 and exactly 50 years after Goolagong Cawley hoisted the Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time. Video released on Sunday shows the moment Barty’s family erupted with joy in their living room on the Gold Coast when their daughter and sister converted match point. In a poignant gesture to her Indigenous idol and mentor, Barty wore a Fila dress inspired by Goolagong’s 1971 Wimbledon outfit, designed by Ted Tinling who revolutionised tennis fashion, throughout her triumphant campaign. “I hope I made Evonne proud,” Barty said during an emotional victory speech. Goolagong Cawley left her in no doubt. “Oh she certainly did,” the former world No 1 said from her home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Sunday. “She made me proud from the first time I saw Ash. She must have been about 13. “She was playing at the Australian Open and [my husband] Roger and I stayed and watched for a bit and we saw one whole point where she showed all the skills.

To: Western & Southern Open and US Open Competitors From: Western & Southern Open Tournament Director and Tournament Referee; US Open Tournament Director and Tournament Referee Re: Special One-Time Allowance for Social Justice Cause Messaging 2020 has been witness to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the United States and throughout the world. The USTA is committed to promoting racial equality. We believe that if tennis is to thrive the sport must become more inclusive and must support people of color. Moreover, the USTA’s diversity and inclusion policy is one that espouses that anyone, from anywhere, should be able to play, compete, and participate in the sport, regardless of race, gender, sexual preference or any other trait. This has led to our 2020 US Open campaign which we have branded “Be Open.” The concept of “Be Open” is that when the world keeps an open mind, great things can happen and change can be accomplished. We are using this as a platform to support frontline workers, diversity and inclusion, and other important charitable initiatives. We further believe that in these unprecedented times, athletes be given the ability to express their beliefs while on court. And although Black Lives Matter is the spark for this premise, the USTA feels strongly that permitting free speech for only one particular social justice cause is not free speech at all. The USTA is therefore equally committed to permitting athletes at the 2020 US Open to express their position and support on social justice issues such as Gay pride, gender equality, etc.

Evonne Goolagong Cawley MBE, AO is an Australian sporting icon. Evonne has inspired generations and continues to do so. One of Australia's all time sporting greats, she has been Australian Sportsman of the Year and Australian of the Year. In 1988, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport Rhode Island and the following year, was inducted into the Aboriginal Sporting Hall of Fame. At Barcelona in 1992, Evonne was one of five Australian sporting legends selected as the first ever international Olympic torch-bearers. Later at Monte Carlo, was one of the team involved in the successful Sydney 2000 bid and was a member of the National Indigenous Advisory Committee to SOCOG. In Evonne’s long and glorious tennis career she won 92 professional tournaments including 7 Grand Slam titles including Wimbledon in 1971 & 1980, The Australian Open 1974-1977 inclusive and the French Open in 1971. She represented Australia in the Federation Cup and although she never won the U.S Open she was runner up four years in succession. At her second Wimbledon triumph in 1980, she became the first mother to hold that title since Dorothy Lambert Chambers in 1914. In December 2007, the WTA realised that the rankings for 1976 were miscalculated and Evonne actually held the top ranking position in Women’s Tennis from April 26, 1976 through to May 9, 1976. In recent years, Evonne has become increasingly involved in Aboriginal issues and a rediscovery of her own extended Wiradjuri clan family prompting the Cawley’s to leave their American base in Florida and return to Australia to live.
