League for Spiritual Discovery Box 175 / M ilbrook, New York 12545 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: The bearer of this document, Mr. Nicholas Sand, is a member of the League for Spiritual Discovery, a legally incorporated religion in the state of New York. The League for Spiritual Discovery uses certain chemicals which have been given to man by the Divine Process for spiritual use as sacraments. Mr. Sand is authorized to manufacture psychedelic substances and to distribute them only to officials of the LSD or officials of other religions which use psychedelic sacraments. History of LSD 1 History of LSD The psychedelic drug/entheogen LSD was first synthesized by the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann in the Sandoz (now Novartis) laboratories in Basel, Switzerland on November 16, 1938.[1] It was not until five years later on April 19, 1943, that the psychedelic properties were found. Discovery Albert Hofmann, born in Taluns, Switzerland, joined the pharmaceutical-chemical department of Sandoz Laboratories, located in Basel as a co-worker with professor Arthur Stoll, founder and director of the pharmaceutical department.[2] He began studying the LSD blotter paper. medicinal plant squill and the fungus ergot as part of a program to purify and synthesize active constituents for use as pharmaceuticals. His main contribution was to elucidate the chemical structure of the common nucleus of Scilla glycosides (an active principal of Mediterranean Squill).[2] While researching lysergic acid derivatives, Hofmann first synthesized LSD on November 16, 1938.[3] The main intention of the synthesis was to obtain a respiratory and circulatory stimulant (an analeptic). It was set aside for five years, until April 16, 1943, when Hofmann decided to take a second look at it. While re-synthesizing LSD, he accidentally absorbed a small amount of the drug through his fingertips and serendipitously discovered its powerful effects.[4] He described what he felt as being: ... affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated-like condition, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors.

Jenkins: Cultures of the Drug: Language, Self, and Politics in Contemporary American Drug Discourse (Under the direction of Christian O. Lundberg) This dissertation responds to the problems of illicit drugs in the contemporary United States. Drugs are also indivisible from the stories we tell about them. Therefore, the dissertation is at once about drugs and the stories we tell about drugs, tracing the dynamic becoming(s) of signification and materiality made to appear stable in the socio-semantic site of the drug. The dissertation shows that the terms that structure the evaluation of drugs are not neutral, but rather the product of the forceful establishment of a series of taxonomic distinctions presented as if the drug is a straightforward and inert field around which meaning can be stabilized and value secured. In opposition to commonsense understandings of drugs, the dissertation argues that prevailing definitions of drugs are ideological assays whose content is derived retroactively from moral and political evaluations of drugs. The dissertation traces the proliferative quality of drugs etymologically and conceptually through the Greek pharmakon to understand this quality as an unique mode of deconstructive potential.

This article is included for historical reference and debate and should not be considered complete nor state of the art information on the subjects it covers.] In the late 1940s, psychologists began experimenting with LSD as a "psychotomimetic" drug - one that causes the taker temporarily to mime the condition of psychosis. Some experimental subjects, however, and eventually some modern mystics like Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, and Alan Watts discovered in LSD a shortcut to the ecstasy and egolessness of nirvana. LSD was recognized as the switch that turned on the clear light of the void. Today's acid trip, however, is far more likely to resemble a live TV broadcast in runny color from the from seat of a roller coaster or a scene from The Exorcist. The decline in psychedelic quality over the years, which resembles the degeneration of Christianity and Russian Communism, has been a consequence of greed and opportunism on the part of manufactures and distributors. They offer to substitute immediate sensory gratifications for the original spiritual ideals. But the history of underground chemistry is also one of ingenuity and courage though influenced by haste and amateurishness. Its is the story of how LSD-25, the most powerful and spiritual molecule known to humanity became a "street drug." Originally all LSD was made by Sandoz Pharmaceutical company, which had developed the chemical and hoped to market it commercially.
